Private Nature Reserve
High in a Costa Rican cloud forest,
a unique conservation venture is under way.
Cloudbridge situated in a beautiful and remote cloud forest on the highest mountain in Central America, is a private nature reserve in Costa Rica. It was created to preserve and reforest T he reserve has three purposes:
  • To help rebuild a deforested part of the tropical cloud forest, thus bridging a gap between two mountainside forests. As well as protecting the existing forest and allowing natural regrowth, we are planting a mix of native trees , thousands of them, to turn pasture back into forest.
Restoring and preserving the native forest protects the biodiversity for which the neotropical forests, and those in Costa Rica in particular, are so famous. Deforestation is causing the loss of about 100 species every day 4 species per hour. Preserving forest and planting trees also helps offset air pollution . As they grow, trees absorb carbon dioxide from the air. This project is but a tiny step to counteract global climate change, but every tree matters. Cloud forest foliage and epiphytes also have a unique capacity to capture moisture in the air. Thus through their impact on the air, water and soil quality, flood control, climate patterns, and numerous known and unknown plant and animal species, cloud forests profoundly affect life surrounding them and life around the planet.
  • To demonstrate that reforestation can improve lives and

Pictures: Wild Yak #1 (19 Kb JPEG) UN FAO Wild Yak #2 (51 Kb JPEG) The wild yak weighs up to 1000 kg (2200 lb). it occurs in treeless uplands, including plains, hills, and mountains, from as low as 3200 m (10,500 ft) up to the limit of vegetation at about 5400 m (18,000 ft). It stays in high areas with permanent snow during the warmer months of August and September, and spends the rest of the year at lower elevations. The wild yak grazes on grasses, herbs and lichens . Ordinarily it gathers in groups of 10 - 30 or more, but it may occasionally be observed in large groups of 100 - 200. The wild yak was once numerous and widespread on the entire Tibetan plateau north of the Himalayas. Currently it is found in remote areas of the Tibetan plateau and adjacent highlands, including Gansu Province, China , with a few having been observed in the Chang Chenmo Valley of Ladakh (eastern Kashmir, India ). Wild yak distribution is highly clumped, with most animals in widely scattered herds, concentrated in the areas with little disturbance by humans.

This book is the study of microorganisms from extreme environments, and it provides a much-needed synthesis of the recent advances in the biology, biotechnology, and management of thermophilic organisms, with specific examples drawn largely from thermal springs in Yellowstone National Park. The work addresses the issues of intellectual property rights with regard to the search for novel microorganisms as sources for pharmaceuticals, and the molecular tools currently used to address microbial diversity, containing how-to sections for all professionals in ecology and conservation.
