Hats off to helmets!
Jump to: Choose article section... Helmets matter Core structure of the campaign Strategies for success Collaboration is the key A few good reasons to start a campaign Choosing a bike helmet for your child What could be more important than helping kids avoid head injuries? Two pediatricians describe their city's bike-helmet campaign- its strategies, its challenges, and its rewards.
The parent guide on choosing a bike helmet may be photocopied and distributed to families in your practice without permission of the publisher. By Elizabeth A. Mumper, MD, Teresa L. Brennan, MD During the last four years, our bike-helmet safety campaign in Lynchburg, VA, has significantly increased children's use of bike helmets. When it began, no more than 15% of the town's children used helmets; our aim was to increase that figure to 50%-the goal set in Healthy People 2000. We exceeded our expectations. By the end of the first three years, bike helmet use, documented by direct observation in sample neighborhoods, increased to 56%. The campaign distributed 1,132 helmets; we do not know how many additional purchases it influenced. We describe our experience here in the hope that other pediatricians will be inspired to start similar campaigns in their own communities. We share lessons we learned the hard way and strategies we have found to be effective, as well as the rewards of being involved in such a program.

    Safe on Wheels
Art by Sheena Studios Surrey is a wonderful place to see from wheels, whether it be a bicycle, skate board, scooter or roller blades. Just as there are laws and rules for safe motor vehicle driving there are the same for wheeling. Following these safety tips will make your wheeling adventure a safe one!
    Rules for Safe Biking

    • Bikes are vehicles, just like cars and trucks.
    • You are a "driver" when you ride in the street
    • STOP before riding out into traffic from a driveway, sidewalk, alley, or parking lot. LOOK left, right, and left again. When there's no traffic, ENTER roadway.
    • RIDE on the right side of the road, with the flow of traffic.
    • OBEY stop signs and red lights. Bicyclists should walk, not ride, through busy intersections.
    • LOOK BACK and YIELD to traffic coming from behind before turning left at intersections.
    • Keep both hands on the handle bars - use a basket, rack, or back-pack to carry packages.
    • Wear light-colored clothing with retro-reflective markings.

To see whether you’re “safety smart” when it comes to exercise, answer the questions below and then read the information to find out more. The more times you answer “yes,” the more safety smart you are!
Do you always wear a helmet when you’re supposed to? If you said yes, you’re really using your head! Whether you’re biking or inline skating around the neighborhood, or playing sports like baseball, football and hockey, wearing a helmet helps keep you safe in case you fall or get hit by a ball! Make sure it’s the right type of helmet for the activity you’re doing. It’s not smart to use your bike helmet for softball or your softball helmet for hockey.
Does your helmet fit right? Here’s another heads up: A helmet that’s too big, wobbly or uncomfortable isn’t going to protect you right. So don’t borrow your big sister’s or your friend’s helmet. Your coach or someone at the store can help you and your parents pick one that fits you just right. Once you have your helmet, always make sure you put it on the right way.
Are you fully equipped to have fun?

Teach Your Children These Facts About Bones Children's bones need both calcium and physical exercise to develop. How much bone mass develops in childhood depends on having both adequate nutrition and exercise. By age 20, children have acquired most of their bone mass. Bone mass determines in large part the strength in their bones as adults. Many adults, especially women, develop osteoporosis, or "porous bones", making them susceptible to broken bones and curved backs in later years. Many children, especially preteens and teenagers and particularly girls, don't take enough calcium or don't exercise enough in the teen years to help them develop healthy skeletons. Habits that promote bone health often develop in childhood; thus, children need to learn healthy habits that help them make strong bones and healthy lifetimes. Offer Snacks That Help Build Healthy Bones Limit access to "junk" or nonnutritious foods and drinks, especially soda pop and fruit drinks that are largely sugared water.

    The Basics of Snowboarding
Snowboarding is a relatively new sport starting in the late 1960s. Snowboarders fall into three general categories of riders:
    • Freeriding - Most beginners will start off in the freeriding category spending most of their time on groomed ski trails. Freestyling - A freestyler is the trickster, always looking for a cool jump sight. Big Mountain or Back Country - These are the off-trail and powder snowboarders.
    First Day Out
Rent snowboarding equipment and take a lesson. Most mountains offer package deals with rentals, instruction and a lift ticket. Lessons will give you the basic techniques you need. If you take a group lesson, you will have others to console you and laugh with while you are learning. Learning should be fun. As in skiing, keep your weight low and forward. It will seem impossible to begin with. But once you get it, it's more natural and fluid than skiing. Be determined and stick with it! Plan on snowboarding for a couple of days, so you can solidify what you learned.
