approver: Richard Lenahan Report Date: Expires: SUMMARY There is no official data regarding the size of the Brazilian market for sporting goods and recreational equipment. Based on estimates provided by local trade magazines, industry experts and data from the Brazilian Import/Export Agency (SISCOMEX), the U.S. Department of Commerce estimates that the total market for sporting goods and recreational equipment in Brazil reached US$ 4.73 billion in 2001, up 1% from the US$ 4.69 billion market size in 2000. In 2002, the market remained stable due to the decreasing exchange rate of the local currency (Real) in comparison to the U.S. dollar and the global economic slowdown. For 2003, market analysts have projected a growth rate of 2-4%. Analysts believe that after electing a new president, the Brazilian economy will tick upwards, and the international and domestic financial situation will improve. Moreover, this sector is expecting grow because Brazilians are becoming more health conscious.

    The Basics of Snowboarding
Snowboarding is a relatively new sport starting in the late 1960s. Snowboarders fall into three general categories of riders:
    • Freeriding - Most beginners will start off in the freeriding category spending most of their time on groomed ski trails. Freestyling - A freestyler is the trickster, always looking for a cool jump sight. Big Mountain or Back Country - These are the off-trail and powder snowboarders.
    First Day Out
Rent snowboarding equipment and take a lesson. Most mountains offer package deals with rentals, instruction and a lift ticket. Lessons will give you the basic techniques you need. If you take a group lesson, you will have others to console you and laugh with while you are learning. Learning should be fun. As in skiing, keep your weight low and forward. It will seem impossible to begin with. But once you get it, it's more natural and fluid than skiing. Be determined and stick with it! Plan on snowboarding for a couple of days, so you can solidify what you learned.

    5. Use of the waterfront area
Information on actual use is both qualitative and quantitative. The most detailed quantitative information on a broad spectrum of use is provided by Lambton Harbour Visitor Records from November 1996 to September 2000. This provides attendance information for events at specific locations by month and year. This does not provide data on informal use (eg walking, jogging, skate boarding, fishing, play ground use) nor on use of the many specific facilities such as the restaurants, Te Papa, Maritime Museum, Shed 6 (Rock ‘N’ Kayak) and Circa. Some quantitative information is available on informal use from the Community Consultative Focus Group discussions and the Absolutely Positive Wellington Survey (1996), the Community Advisory Group Open Day Survey (2000), the WCC Residents’ Satisfaction Survey (2000). There is considerable qualitative information on use in various submissions to WCC and commentary of the Community Consultation Group. In addition to the above aspects of use, car parking is a substantial use on the Waterfront. Quantitative information from the Lambton Harbour Car Park Study (1998) and the Lambton Harbour Car Parking Feasibility Study (1998) are reviewed to develop a better understanding of this activity in its current and future role in waterfront use.
