Pedestrians and designs for the future Recent discussions about pedestrian safety have prompted studies about increased attention to right of way laws and of handicapped accessibility problems around the community. Ours is not the only community concerned about problems of pedestrian safety. With increased interest in health and fitness comes increased walked, biking, blading and skate boarding. As these increase, attention to how they interact with traffic patterns must be addressed.
Looking back at the history of transportation proves to be interesting to see how we arrived at where we are today. Minnesota’s lakes and rivers provided the first means of transportation for settlers and for trading posts. Some other notable happenings in our history of transportation include the Red River Ox Cart Trail of the early 1800s; the arrival of the first steamboat to visit Fort Snelling (the Virginia); the 1851 requirement of the Minnesota Territorial Legislature for all healthy men between the ages of 21 and 50 years of age to work three days a year building roads; and the first bridge built over the Mississippi River in 1855 at St. Anthony Falls.
Enhancing quality of life for residents ranks very high on every city’s list of priorities. Whether in the metropolitan area or in greater Minnesota, cities are making their communities more friendly to pedestrians and realizing a number of associated benefits. Cities are looking at an integrated approach to transportation planning that expands infrastructure investments and policies to serve the multiple goals of economic development, environmental enhancement, and social occasion.

King County Executive Ron Sims urges residents to enjoy local bike trails and always wear bike helmets "King County is home to extensive bike trails, many avid bicyclists and bicycle clubs, and numerous recreational cyclists like myself," said King County Executive Ron Sims. "Let's enjoy this great activity to the fullest, and this means always wearing a helmet." In King County from 1997 to 2001, over 850 people required hospitalization for bicycle-related crashes, and an additional 24 people died. Head injuries account for 60% of bicycle-related deaths.

    Nova "Hunt for the Supertwister"
A powerful tornado is a terrifying phenomenon that continues to defy decades of scientific efforts to predict it. During one of the worst tornado seasons on record, a NOVA camera team chased across the Midwest, capturing hair-raising footage of highly destructive twisters in action. But this is much more than just another "extreme weather" show, focusing on the efforts of two scientists at the University of Oklahoma to develop radically different approaches to forecasting twisters: one relies on "virtual tornados" created inside supercomputers, while the other involves hunting down real-life storms to collect data firsthand (the method that inspired the movie Twister). With jaw-dropping 3-D graphics generated by the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, "Hunt for the Supertwister" features spectacular footage of these terrifying twisters and gives viewers a front-row seat to the risky and thrilling art of storm chasing. Reporting America at War "The Romance of War"
The first episode begins in 1898 with the Spanish-American War and, after flashing backward to trace the Civil War-era roots of American war reporting, goes on to explore the role of political commitment in war coverage during the first half of the 20th century. Through the experiences of Martha Gellhorn, Ernie Pyle, Andy Rooney, Walter Cronkite and others, the film examines the ways in which a belief in the rightness of the cause led to an emphasis on the noble and heroic aspects of battle, and to an unprecedented level of cooperation between the military and the press. b : 14-Feb-2003
NOTE: The real-life Ada Byron Lovelace (1815-1852) (voiced by Jane Curtin) is known as one of the founders of scientific computing and is the daughter of the romantic poet Lord Byron. In a time when young women were often discouraged from intellectual pursuits, Ada's mother, Lady Byron, had Ada tutored in math and music. Ada had designed a flying machine by around the age of 12. When Ada was 17, she began a lifelong friendship with inventor Charles Babbage, inventor of a calculating machine called the Analytical Engine. Her work on the device, which can be considered a general-purpose computer, earned her a place in history. Her writings anticipated that computers would be used for practical and scientific purposes and also to generate music and graphics. The U.S. Department of Defense honored Lovelace's achievements by naming a software language, "Ada," after her in 1979.

    INTRODUCTION
A comprehensive needs assessment is the critical first step a coalition or organization must take in order to develop an effective and successful underage drinking prevention effort. This "Community How To Guide on Needs Assessment and Strategic Planning," details the elements of a needs assessment. Beginning with data, the booklet walks the reader through the process organizations must follow to obtain all the information they will need to determine the exact causes of underage drinking and the appropriate solutions to those problems. To make the process easier, this booklet includes a sample data checklist that communities can use to determine what types of data are currently available and what data the community believes they will need to be effective in the future. Sample surveys are also available along with instructions for conducting a focus or discussion group with key members of the community. In addition, this booklet describes the other needed elements including a review of current laws, regulations, policies and procedures governing underage drinking and a review of what is currently occurring in a community with respect to underage drinking prevention. Sample questionnaires in the areas of prevention, education, enforcement and media are included in the Appendix #1 so communities can quickly begin their assessment.
