The James Ossuary on a filthy Tel Aviv toilet in July 2003 (Israel Antiquities Authority) [LARGER IMAGE] The story first exploded into the headlines on October 21, 2002, with the beginning of a skillfully orchestrated publicity campaign. At a Washington press conference jointly sponsored by the Discovery Channel and the Biblical Archaeology Society, Hershel Shanks, publisher and editor of the popular Biblical Archaeology Review , presented a large audience of reporters and TV crews with photographs and background supporting what he called "the first ever archaeological discovery to corroborate biblical references to Jesus." The discovery in question was a small chalk ossuary, or bone container, bearing the Aramaic inscription Yaakov bar Yoseph, Achui de Yeshua , "James, son of Joseph, brother of Jesus." According to Shanks, the ossuary belonged to an anonymous Tel Aviv antiquities collector who, having become aware of its significance, was now willing to allow news of its discovery be made public. The New York Times , the Wall Street Journal , the Washington Post , and Time Newsweek suggested that "Biblical archaeologists may have found their holy grail."

The writings of a number of historians today have led to their being designated "biblical minimalists" in some circles. "Minimalism" may not describe precisely this predominantly European colloquium, but the label is at least useful in tracing the leading trend of their theories. Students of pop culture have applied the term across a wide spectrum of fields since the 1960s, including art, music, architecture, design, fashion, business, and linguistics. "Minimalism" generally points to the tendency to simplify, to reduce the elements of a discipline or craft to their most basic level. In business, for example, it may entail downsizing or moderation. Minimalist music is marked by repetition and recurrence in composition. The reason for applying the description "minimalist" to the writings of historians involves both method and ideology. Their method is primarily nontextual; they admit deriving a "minimum" of credible history from the biblical materials themselves. The Bible is primarily fiction, as they view it, consisting of myth and legend. Instead they appeal to what they see as more objective, scientific sources of historical data, namely, the results of

After the destruction of the First Temple in Jerusalem, the Jewish people were restored to their Land. Nehemiah, in conjunction with people from outside Israel, were instrumental in helping to rebuild and restore what had lain desolate for the previous seventy years. He also encouraged those with him to put their hand to the plow to plant, to cultivate and to reap. In the midst of this physical rebuilding, the spiritual life of the people was also being renewed, as they sought the Lord and rebuilt His Temple.

The book of Joshua brings to life real history during the crucial period of transition for the Israelites as they follow God's direction and settle in the promised land. Israel needed discipline in light of their newfound freedom. They faced the responsibility of living as a covenant people while adapting to change. Joshua describes the historic shift from the revelation of God's promises to their realization. God's care of his people becomes obvious, and their struggle with disobedience, selfishness, and fear is very human.
Francis Schaeffer's thoughts on the book of Joshua show readers the historic, spiritual, and intellectual nourishment available for the Christian life through the examples of Joshua and his fellow Israelites. In the book of Joshua, Schaeffer finds that God reveals his sorrow over human sin, as well as his gracious love for his people. This is as true for us as it was for those in Joshua's time. This study of the settling of Israel will inspire readers to see the hand of God present in all of history, including today.
Classic.

A sober, disciplined, well-reasoned response to the so-called minimalists who have dominated recent discussion of the history of ancient Israel. A Biblical History correctly insists that the 'historical reliability' off ancient texts largely depends on which testimonies to trust. The consequence is that the skepticism that his long dominated Old Testament discussion can no longer claim a privileged positioneither epistemologically or morallybut in fact is an ideological advocacy. This book will need to be taken seriously and will be welcomed by all those who engage such issues of the historicity of the biblical text.
Walter Brueggemann, Columbia Theological Seminary
Although not everyone will agree with this 'maximalist' history of ancient Israel, I cannot imagine a more honest, more comprehensive, better documented effort from a conservative perspective. For more than a decade now, radical revisionists have claimed that a history of ancient of biblical Israel can no longer be written and that historians can be either critical or confessional, but not both. A Biblical History proves the revisionist wrong on both counts.
William G. Dever, University of Arizona

The House of David - It's not a House of Cards
Amidst all the political turbulence, it's an exciting year for Israel. The Jewish State is commemorating the 3,000 th anniversary of David's conquest of Jerusalem. But not everybody is celebrating. Many scholars still deny that King David ever existed. For such biblical skeptics King David's kingdom is no more historical than the mythical founding of Camelot. Like King Arthur, David was a mythical figure around whom a collection of stories has grown up. Why do so many scholars persist in this attitude? Because they consider the Bible to be myth until it is confirmed by other sources. In other words, unless the ancient Philistine or Aramean records mention David, such skeptics assume that David did not actually exist. Until recently King Ahab was the earliest biblical character who appears in secular historical records. His treaty with the king of Syria is recorded in Syrian inscriptions. So by our skeptic's rule, no biblical character before Ahab—including King David—can be considered a historical figure. The summer of 1993 must have come as a great shock to the biblical skeptics. That's when Avraham Biran, an archaeologist at Hebrew Union College, discovered an ancient Aramean inscription at the biblical city of Dan in northern Israel. The inscription dates from the ninth century BC, and it bears the name "David."

IS THERE proof OUTSIDE the Bible that the events described in Scripture really happened that its great characters actually lived? Where is the PROOF that the inspired Word of God has been accurately preserved for us today especially since there are so many different modern translations? It's time we studied the proof of HISTORY and ARCHAEOLOGY to further prove the Bible is FACT, and not fable. About Our Cover ... This Hieroglyphic writing on the wall of the temple of Rameses III in Egypt commemorates events of earlier days when Israel's King Hoshea allied with So, King of Egypt, against the Assyrians. The FACTS related on this wall about King So, or Shoshenk, agree PERFECTLY with the Biblical account. But because the Bible has been rejected as mere fable and myth, men have been UNABLE to successfully reconstruct world history. History and Archaeology Prove the Bible True IS THERE proof OUTSIDE the Bible that the events described in Scripture really happened that its great characters actually lived?

Who knows how many children have been taught that Eve ate an apple when God told her not to. What an embarrassment to the religious teachers of today. How many sermons have been preached on the Sin in the Garden by "parsons" who do not have the slightest idea of what that sin was?
Open your Bible, PRAY that the Holy Spirit will show you the truth, and I will tell you what I have received thru study. I sincerely hope that you will NOT take my word for it without checking it out for yourself. The following is not contradicted any where in the whole of God's word. On the contrary, much of the hard to understand passages of the Words and parables of Jesus as well as the writings of Paul, Peter and James are made plain.
In the first chapter, we learned that there was an earth age before this present one, and that God destroyed his original creation. This in itself is an astounding statement, yet God's Word declares it for those with "eyes to see". Also in Gen 1, we saw the CREATION of the second (this present) Earth and Heaven Age, through the sixth day man (the races of even today), and after the seventh day the FORMING of Adam (the eighth-day man), and his wife, Eve. We found that this Adam was made a special servant of God, for it was through his seed that Christ Himself was to come. This man was special. We found that even the ORDER of creation was different in Gen chapters 1 and 2. God gave Adam and Eve totally different instructions than the sixth day man, and prepared a special place for them to live, separate from the rest of creation.

    79. Negev: Biblical History
Jewish connections with it in the postbiblical period are tenuous. Various biblical cities are today identified with tells in the northern Negev.
    http://www.jnf-canada.org/jnf/negev2.html
In the Bible, Negev refers to southern and southeastern Judah, an area split up between various groups, each of which is connected with a Negev of its own: Negev of Judah, around Beer-Sheba; Negev of Caleb, north of it; Negev of the Cherethites (Philistines), to the northwest; Negev of the Kenites, to the east; Negev of the Jerahmeelites, to the southeast. Today the name is applied to the whole southern region of Israel, extending from Beersheba to Eilat.
At the time of the Exodus, the Amalekites roamed in the southern part of the Negev, while the Canaanites of Arad held strongly to the north. Attempts by the Israelites to pass through the Negev on the direct route to Canaan ended in failure. The northern region is included within the boundaries of the land of Israel (Num. 34:4; Josh. 15:3). After Joshua's conquest, Simeon had a weak hold on the northern Negev centering around Beer-Sheba. Saul and David fended off the Amalekites, and Solomon and his successors set up fortresses to guard the routes to Elath and Egypt. Uzziah made the greatest effort to develop the Negev in the Israelite period, keeping up his communications with Elath through this region, and, apart from extending agriculture (II Chron. 26:10), building large fortresses at Kadesh, Arad, Horvat 'Uza, and other sites.
After the return from Babylonian exile, settlement in the area declined. Jewish connections with it in the post-biblical period are tenuous. The northern part was held by Alexander Yannai. It came under the control of the Nabateans, who used its highways for travel from their capital Petra and from their port Aila (Elath) to Gaza and the shores of the Mediterranean. The Nabateans began to develop agriculture around certain spots in the Negev, including Avedat and Elusa, in order to provide water, as well as fodder and food, for their camels and men. Toward the end of Nabatean rule in the Negev, the area under cultivation had to be expanded in order to provide for the growing population, as is known from inscriptions around Avedat.
