A Biblical History of Israel > Customer Review #1: a long time coming

The modern arguments for how a methodology should be when approaching the Bible are challenged, and challenged well! The book borders on overemphasizing its counterarguments. There really is no reason to do this, for the arguments are very good and hardly need any repetition. This history is one that is selective, on purpose. You do not get a great sense of how Israel interacted in a society with each other, as different classes and occupations. But this book very much fills a void in Biblical Historical Studies, and makes people aware of all the issues that go into scholars work on the Bible. Similar to Dever, who has a comment of the back cover of the book, this book gives both the Biblical author and editors, and modern day Bible historian, credibility to be both confessional and critical.

And, study of Christian Apologetics which can bring one to a closer relationship with God by learning how to discern. Without discernment an open mind becomes a gullible one. (Christmas, Easter...? Biblical History of the Church
The history of the church in previous dispensations is found in the Bible and in the Book of Mormon.
Old Testament
The Old Testament word "congregation" is the same thing as the New Testament word "church". The word "church" does not usually appear in the English language versions of the Old Testament. However, this word in the New Testament is the translation of the Greek word "ekklesia". The Greek version of the Old Testament in use at the time that the New Testament was written is called the Septuagint. The Septuagint did in fact frequently contain the word "ekklesia" as the translation of the Hebrew word "QEL" (qahal). This Hebrew word is usually translated in English as "congregation". Here is just one example of this association between the Old Testament word "congregation" and the New Testament word "church". Nehemiah 5:13
And all the congregation said, Amen, and praised the LORD. Thus by using the Septuagint as the key to properly understanding the language of the Bible, it may be seen that the history of the nation of Israel in the Old Testament is essentially the history of the Church of God. These people suffered greatly at the hands of the Babylonians, the Greeks, and the Romans.

I CO 11:1; 4:16; CO 1:3; EPH. 3:16; 6:18-19; PH 3:17; 1TH 1:6; 5:25 - St. Paul asks everyone to pray for all the saints (believers) and he prayed for them to pray for himself. As he prayed for others. Mary's intercessory power with Jesus is the same as St. Paul's was and the way ours is for others we pray for either at their request or on our own. St. Paul encouraged people to imitate him. This was done not to distract from Jesus Christ but to incite them to a closer imitation of Jesus Christ, for he wrote that the very meaning of Christian life is the imitation of Jesus and the realization of his life in us. Mary's preeminence in this is that she did this better than anyone did; in her Christ's grace is most perfectly realized. Mary's virtue reflects God's own virtue. LK 1:49; In Mary's own words: "He who is mighty has done great things for me." JN 2:4 - Jesus performed the Miracle at Cana at the request of Mary, His Mother even thou it was not yet his time.
II MC 15:12-16 - Jeremiah and Onias, already deceased interceded for the living. JB 19:26; ICO 13:12; IJN 3:2 - Those in Heaven see God directly and their prayer is more powerful because they are not limited by faith. Vatican II provides in the Constitution of the Catholic Church "Let the faithful be taught that our communion with those in heaven (by veneration) in no way diminishes the worship of adoration given to God The Father, through Jesus Christ in the Spirit; on the contrary, it greatly enriches it." The Catholic Church does not teach us to pray to anyone but God but we do prayerfully address Mary, Our Blessed Mother, asking her to pray for us and with us to God. Mary does not stand between God and us. MT 18:19 - Jesus said: "If two of you agree to ask anything."

A BIBLICAL HISTORY OF JERUSALEM
By Lee Underwood http://www.tzemach.org/index.htm References to the city of Jerusalem appear throughout the entire Hebrew and Messianic Scriptures. Through the ages it has been called by many names: Salem, Mount Moriah, Adonai Urah, Jebus, Jerusalem, Zion, the City of David, and Ariel (Lion of God). God has declared that this is the place He will establish His Name and will dwell there forever (1 Kings 9:3). This is a city rich in history, tradition and culture. It is also one of the main focal points of the United Nations and the world. This article will show the history of Jerusalem as it is presented in the Scriptures: without interpretation or speculation. The aspect of prophecy will not be addressed as this is not a part of the literal history of Jerusalem. To understand the periods of time, all dates are taken from known historical events, except in the time of Abraham. The Beginning The Scriptural history of Jerusalem begins when Abraham meets "Melek Tzedek", king of Salem - around 2110 BC (Genesis 14:17-20). This is following Abraham's defeat of Chedorlaomer after he had captured Abraham's nephew, Lot. A peculiar aspect of this meeting is that Abraham had bread and wine with "Melek Tzedek" and then gave him a tenth of all he had. The Scriptures reveal that "Melek Tzedek" is a priest of the God Most High.

Interesting point: librarian Cesar Merchan-Hamann shows Prince Michael of Kent the 16th Century text at the Sternberg Centre in Finchley By Ian Lloyd Prince Michael of Kent was shown a book of Biblical commentary printed in 16th Century venice during a visit to the Sternberg Centre on Tuesday. Prince Michael spent around an hour-and-a-half at the centre in East End Road, Finchley, on Tuesday (May 4), where he planted a magnolia stellata tree to mark his visit. He also chatted with the centre's life president, Sir Sigmund Sternberg, and director Rabbi Tony Bayfield, as well as ambassadors from Georgia and Yemen and diplomats from the Philippines and Tunisia. Lauren Rich, fundraising administrator at the centre, which is the headquarters for the Reform Synagogues of Great Britain, said: "It went really well. It started raining just after he planted the tree so we had a bit of luck. "He seemed very nice. He enjoyed lunch and made a speech saying, Thank you very much.' I think he enjoyed himself."

VERIFICATION OF THE PATTERN IN BIBLICAL HISTORY By Dr. Henry C. Kinley He gave this lecture to a class Sunday, December 14, 1958, at 1347 North Cahuenga Blvd, in Hollywood, CA. ***Note; Although the True Names were revealed to-Dr Kinley in a vision in 1931 he used Lord, God, and Jesus Christ until he published Elohim, The Archetype Original Pattern 0f the Universe in 1961. Throughout his lecture Dr Kinley refers to 3-fold illustrations to help the audience follow certain points. We have inserted charts in this article as a visual aid. Minor editorial changes also have been made for clarity and to preserve the flow of thought. Which events in the Bible can be compared with the Pattern? Were Adam and Eve created in perfection? The first event in biblical history that we shall analyze to see how the Three-fold Pattern fits is the Adamic Transgression - the Fall of Adam and Eve and their expulsion from the Garden of Eden. This is a downward operation of Spirit Law by the Pattern. After God created Eve from the rib of His first Son, Adam, they were placed in the garden with an innocent or abstract state of consciousness, sharing in the eternal love of spiritual existence, (i.e. they were in an ideal, as opposed to a practical state, a state apart from the concrete, not tainted with sin, ignorant of evil, free from guilt). Here were two souls united in a state of mortal perfection, dwelling in the Garden of Eden under the beneficent (i.e. good and kind) warmth of God's love and affection, knowing no evil, knowing no fear. Thus Adam and Eve were in the abstract or exalted innocent state.

Biblical History of King Solomon's Temple The Origin of the Phoenix as a symbol in Phoenixmasonry The old mythological legend of the Phoenix is a familiar one. The bird was described as of the size of an eagle, with a head finely crested, a body covered with beautiful plumage, and eyes sparkling like stars. She was said to live six hundred years in the wilderness, when she built for herself a funeral pile of aromatic woods, which she ignited with the fanning of her wings, and emerged from the flames with a new life. Hence the phoenix has been adopted universally as a symbol of immortality. Higgins (Anacalypsis, ii., 441) says that the phoenix is the symbol of an ever-revolving solar cycle of six hundred and eight years, and refers to the Phoenician word phen, which signifies a cycle. Aumont, the first Grand Master of the Templars after the martyrdom of DeMolay, and called the "Restorer of the Order," took, it is said, for his seal, a phoenix brooding on the flames, with the motto, "Ardet ut vivat" - She burns that she may live.

On the Importance and Relevance of Biblical History
by Mark A. Aardsma
Ours is a generation that has little interest in history. This is one of the marks of modernism and the self-centered bent of human nature. Modern Christians, influenced by the prevailing worldview, often find history, including biblical history, rather irrelevant and unimportant. I will argue that exactly the opposite is true. I will present two reasons why I believe biblical history is highly important and intimately relevant to the modern Christian. Here is the first. Without a defensible case for biblical historicity, rational belief in Christianity is impossible. Said another way, if it can be shown that the Bible is a book of fairy tales, not true history, the Christian faith is invalidated. If the Old Testament isn't historically true, then Jesus, who believed the Old Testament, believed a lie. If He believed a lie, He is not the Son of God. If He is not the Son of God, His death on the cross has no power to atone for the sin of the world. Biblical history is relevant to the modern Christian because the basic truth of Christianity depends on the basic truth of the events recorded in the Bible. The resurrection of Christ, I believe, is the ultimate example. If Jesus Christ did not really rise from the dead, if His resurrection is not a real, historical event, then I am trusting a dead man for salvation and eternal life. The truth of biblical history is very important.

Description
The book of Joshua brings to life real history during the crucial period of transition for the Israelites as they follow God's direction and settle in the promised land. Israel needed discipline in light of their newfound freedom. They faced the responsibility of living as a covenant people while adapting to change. Joshua describes the historic shift from the revelation of God's promises to their realization. God's care of his people becomes obvious, and their struggle with disobedience, selfishness, and fear is very human. Francis Schaeffer's thoughts on the book of Joshua show readers the historic, spiritual, and intellectual nourishment available for the Christian life through the examples of Joshua and his fellow Israelites. In the book of Joshua, Schaeffer finds that God reveals his sorrow over human sin, as well as his gracious love for his people. This is as true for us as it was for those in Joshua's time. This study of the settling of Israel will inspire readers to see the hand of God present in all of history, including today.

58. Nazareth
A biblical history of the city.
http://www.ctsp.co.il/LBS pages/LBS_nazareth.htm
Nazareth In the hill country of the tribe of Zebulun, a small village existed for almost two thousand years before the birth of Jesus and yet was virtually unknown in ancient texts and references. This village was unwalled and unprotected, built into a small chalk ridge with a single source of water several hundred meters away from the main body of the village. Small caves were closed in the front to make homes, used for generations. Its unimpressive nature is reflected in the statement of Nathaniel, "Can anything good come out of Nazareth?" [John 1:46]. The ancient town is now dwarfed by the massive modern village filled with Arab Christians which now fills every ridge around the old village. A number of archaeologists have concluded that the population of the ancient village likely never exceeded 500 persons at the time that Joseph and Mary made this village their home. Two churches dominate the city's ancient memory, the Greek Orthodox Church at "Mary's Well" and the Basilica of the Annunciation. The Greek Church is the older of the two certainly one of the places visited by Arculf (670); the current structure is 300 hundred years old. The tradition of the spring as the place of the angelic visitation of Gabriel no doubt spurred from the "Proto-evangelium of James" (2 nd century) which set the scene as Mary was drawing water. Some two hundred meters away, the Basilica of the Annunciation was built in the 1960's over Byzantine and a Crusader remains erected to celebrate the memory of an angel's visit to the ancient cave style home found on that site.

Author: Easley, Kendell H.
Release Date: 7/1/2003

In the Holman QuickSource Guide to Understanding the Bible , Kendell Easley provided a concise overview of each of the sixty-six books of the Bible. Now in the Holman Illustrated Guide to Biblical History, Easley provides both novices and advanced Bible students a way of placing the Bible’s myriad of details into an easy-to-grasp pattern.
Being able to locate people and events on the timeline of Bible history enhances understanding of particular chapters and verses. Since the books of the Bible aren’t arranged in historical sequence, it’s easy to miss connections between various events and people that appear in different books. Now the Holman Illustrated Guide to Biblical History enables the reader to see numerous connections that otherwise might have eluded them. Photos, maps, timelines, and text all work together to help students of the Bible come to a new level of understanding what God has done and what He does and will do.

60. Realms Of Faith: Summary Of Biblical History
SUMMARY OF biblical history. Before Abraham. (Genesis 111). God created the universe and fashioned it for mankind. God caused a garden
http://faith.propadeutic.com/history/summary.html
SUMMARY OF BIBLICAL HISTORY
Before Abraham
(Genesis 1-11)
God created the universe and fashioned it for mankind. God caused a garden paradise to grow in Eden and made the first man, Adam. Adam was charged to keep the garden. When God created Eve to be Adam's wife and helper, He told them to multiply, fill the earth, and cultivate it. Adam and Eve were created in God's image, as His ambassadors on the earth. But they sinned and were expelled from the garden, cast out into a harsh world. All their offspring would inherit the curse of sin. As humans grew more populous, they grew more and more evil. Eventually God destroyed the entire inhabited world in a great Flood, but He preserved Noah and his family. All the people groups of the earth today are descended from Noah. Although Noah feared God, the majority of his descendants rejected Him. God finally scattered the people across the earth by disrupting their common language.
The Patriarchs
(Genesis 12-50)
The Exodus and Conquest
(Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, Deuteronomy, and Joshua)
God led the Israelites through the Sinai Peninsula with a pillar of fire and smoke. They arrived at Mount Sinai, where God gave Moses the Torah, which formed the basis for the Israelites' worship, morality, and social justice. God had chosen the Israelites as His people, and they were to live for His glory. But the Israelites were afraid to enter the promised land because of the Cannanites who lived there. Because of their rebellion, God left them to wander in the wilderness until all the adults of that generation had died (with the exceptions of Joshua and Caleb). The Israelites finally arrived at the eastern edge of Canaan in 1406 B.C., about forty years after they had left Egypt. God allowed Moses to see the promised land from a mountaintop before he died.
