Chronology - a key to Biblical History
One does not have to be a student of the doctrine of Creation for very long before one is aware of the importance of biblical chronology. But the problems are apparently extensive - not just in terms of geological time but historical. For some reason, an attack on the historicity of the Bible is good media news. An American author, Thomas Thompson of Milwaukee, has published a book, The Early History of the Israelite People , in which he challenges the historical view of such characters as Abraham, Jacob, Moses, David and Solomon, and the historicity of the events such as the Exodus from Egypt and the Conquest of Canaan. Asked to comment on his findings, evangelical leader Clive Calver claimed that, if his findings were demonstrated to be true, then it would have massive implications for our faith. So, what is the position? Could not Clive Calver have been more on the attack than the defensive? Or, have we already lost the battle? Anyone who studies the interaction between archaeology and the Bible will be aware that Thompson is not saying anything new - it has been said by many archaeologists for a long time. Essentially these people are claiming that there is no extra-biblical evidence for the great historical events of the Bible nor for the characters such as Solomon. Are they right?

L. Eslinger Key dates in biblical history
A Handful of Key Dates in Biblical History
Like most mythologies, the Bible reflects a history of human experience. As a mythological compilation, the Bible is distinctive in the degree to which it intertwines its myths, national experiences, and history. Committing a handful of key dates to memory is a simple way, natural to the literature of the Bible, to structure an understanding this ancient body of literature. These dates serve only as simplified aids to memory. They do not represent precise historical data. Modern historians dispute the historicity (the question of whether the description of an event reflects any event at all) of many biblical accounts. For mythological purposes, the issue of historicity is more or less irrelevant. The dates, roughly provided by modern historical analysis of the Bible and of the cultural legacy of ancient Israel's east Mediterranean neighbours, identify the approximate (sometimes exact) chronological sequence of events in biblical literature. Date Significance ANE Political Context The time of the patriarchs, venerable ancestors of Israel. Famous for their early covenantal exchanges with Yahweh.

(Via E-mail) Alcoholics Anonymous History Making Known the Biblical History and Roots of Alcoholics Anonymous An Eleven-Year Research, Writing, Publishing, and Fact Dissemination Project By Dick B. In the period from 1990 to date, author Dick B. has been assembling historical materials that piece together and document the virtually unknown elements of the early A.A. spiritual program of recovery. When he came on board as a very sick alcoholic, he was bewildered and encountered bewilderment over the intrusion into A.A. of "higher powers," "any gods," "not-godness," "fourth dimension," "Creative Intelligence," and dozens of other strange ideas foreign to his education and beliefs. Concepts that, for the most part, were left undefined by the latter-day members of A.A. The author began with interviews and carefully catalogued and retained the results. Then there were trips to archives, libraries, collections, and private memoranda locations. These too were collected and analyzed. There were tapes to be heard, videos to be seen, pictures to be viewed. There were booklets, pamphlets, news articles, pieces of correspondence, memoranda, notes, and oral histories all to be fitted into place. And then there were books-–over 4,000 of them. Each had a place and a role to play.

Biblical History and Archaeology
T he book of Genesis speaks extremely briefly about the initial period of the life of humanity. After the story of Cain and Abel, the period before the flood is limited almost to a genealogy, to names alone. Calculating the number of years the antediluvial patriarchs lived, we count a span of approximately 1600 years. Thus, the history of many centuries occupies only a single chapter — the fourth of Genesis. Hence we see how Moses protects his account from arbitrary, popular, or mythological tales. As a source for his genealogies, Moses undoubtedly had very ancient and, of course, very brief lists, whose place of origin was Mesopotamia . From the beginning of its existence, mankind preserved its history as the apple of its eye. Families preserved the memory of their ancestors. But the whole history could express itself only in one thing, in the recording of names and length of life. In contemporary excavations in Mesopotamia , cuneiform fragments are being discovered which go back to the third millennium before Jesus Christ, which means several hundred years before Abraham. In addition to these records, antiquity tried to preserve from generation to generation the memory of its greatest ancestors, the heads of families, and built tombs and similar monuments in their memory. After a detailed account of the flood, the book of Genesis again returns to its genealogical history, again embracing almost two thousand years, and again it is just as laconic. It just as strictly follows data from sources — unknown to us — in enumerating the heads of generations until Abraham. These records are interrupted by two accounts: that of the flood and Noah and his sons, and that of the building of the

by: F.F. Bruce Format: Paperback, 258pp.
ISBN: 0830815104
Publisher: InterVarsity Press The story of Israel is one of the outstanding tales of human history. Israel, occupying a narrow strip of land between sea and desert, was positioned on an international highway of commerce and warfare. This was a people whose future would be intertwined with the stories of nations great and small.
F. F. Bruce shapes the daunting complexities of this history, nearly fourteen hundred years from the exodus to the destruction of Jerusalem in A.D. 70, into straight prose that sparkles with clarity. More than half of the book is devoted to the postexilic history of Israel, the 'intertestamental' period and the first-century history that forms the backdrop of the New Testament.
First published in 1963, Israel and the Nations has achieved wide recognition as an excellent introduction to the history of Israel. This new edition, carefully revised by David F. Payne, includes some new material and a revised bibliography.

There are physical items have been purported to support the existence of a man corresponding to the figure of Jesus. Some of these objects like "The Jesus Box" ( http://edition.cnn.com/2003/TECH/science/06/18/jesus.box/ ) have been dismissed as fakes, while others like "The Shroud of Turin" ( http://www.shroud.com/ ) are surround by controversy and have not been proven to be either authentic or fraudulent.
No piece of physical evidence has been introduced that conclusively proves that the man known as Jesus Christ existed, although there is a fair amount of historical writing that suggests that he did. It should be noted that the question "Did Jesus exist?" and "Was Jesus the son of God?" are considered to be separate questions by many people.

This is following Abraham's defeat of Chedorlaomer after he had captured Abraham's nephew, Lot. A peculiar aspect of this meeting is that Abraham had bread and wine with "Melek Tzedek" and then gave him a tenth of all he had. The Scriptures reveal that "Melek Tzedek" is a priest of the God Most High.

    By Father John J. Castelot
T he story of Cain and Abel is a horrifying story precisely because it involves the violent killing of one's own brother. It is a particularly terrifying story because it strikes at the very foundation of society, the family. When family ties are violated, all relationships are strained. The story of Cain and Abel is a cautionary tale, a dramatic reminder of the evil that lurks in human hearts. The story's flip side reminds us how basic and important it is that family members love and respect each other. When these qualities are lacking, the family becomes dysfunctional, fails its God intended purpose. No wonder the Bible is so interested in promoting healthy family life. In fact, biblical history is largely family history. For example:
    • The disrespect of Noah's sons for their father is shown to be potentially disastrous.
