The unique format of penalizing skiers for their misses on the shooting range often leads to dramatic races. This year's world championships could produce some new faces in the biathlon elite. The women's field is wide-open with Sweden's Magdalena Forsberg retired and Norway's Liv Grete Poiree out with a newborn baby. The men's favorite has to be Norway's Ole Einar Bjoerndalen, who won four golds in Salt Lake City.

Cross Country Skier
Jan-Feb, 2003 by Kara Salmela
Some historians believe biathlon originated in Norway about 4,000 years ago, as documented by rock carvings of two men stalking animals on skis. From the 1700s on, biathlon played a military role; armed skiers protected the Scandinavian nations. The first biathlon competition took place in 1767 between "ski-runner companies" which guarded the Swedish-Norwegian borders. In 1919, Finish statistics show about 2,000 men participating in biathlon each winter. And in the late 1930s, the Finnish army on skis, carrying rifles, out numbered the Russians 10 to one and defended Finland's border. The first widely recognized international competition in biathlon was staged during the Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France in 1924. During those games, the military patrol was introduced as a demonstration event and was continued in the 1928, 1936, and 1948 Olympics. It wasn't until 1955 that biathlon was accepted as an official Olympic sport, and only six nations participated.

Biathlon Most Popular Sport Translated by Brian Olsen (Frozenbullet.com)
January 29, 2002 Biathlon is the favorite Olympic sport of the Norwegian people. At least that is what an Olympiatoppen survey has concluded. 31 percent responded "biathlon" when asked "What is your favorite sport in the Olympics" on Olympiatoppen's internet site. The sport is enjoying enormous popularity this season due to sensational performances by its elite World Cup athletes. High profiles like Ole Einar Bjørndalen and Liv Grete Skjelbreid Poiree, married to Frenchman Raphael Poiree, have also added to the attractiveness of the sport.
"As a television sport, it is an interesting sport to follow, you know. I am almost entirely neutral, since you know that I come from the sport of orienteering. I admit that I followed biathlon closely before [becoming head trainer]", said Erlend Slokvik, Norway's primary coach.
Biathlon's main competitors in the poll were speedskating (24 percent) and cross country skiing (19 percent).

World Cup Biathlon 2004
Fort Kent, Maine Alison Bulman Wednesday, January 21, 2004 Combining cross-country race skiing and rifle marksmanship, Biathlon originated in Scandinavia where primitive hunters traveled on skis to pursue game in the winter months. In the late 1700s, Swedish and Norwegian border patrol ski troops held the first Biathlon competition. It became an Olympic sport in 1960 in Squaw Valley and has grown into the most popular winter sport in Europe. Millions of Europeans will tune in to Maine’s Saint John Valley March 3-6, as it hosts the first Biathlon World Cup ever held in New England. Fort Kent joins the upper echelon of only three other United States World Cup host cities, among them Olympic Games hosts Lake Placid, New York, and Salt Lake City, Utah. Event Manager and Chief of Competition, Max Cobb, says, “It’s a real tribute to the Maine Winter Sports Center and Fort Kent’s extraordinary volunteers that this event is coming.” Portland’s philanthropic Libra Foundation founded the Maine Winter Sports Center in 1999 to reintroduce skiing to Aroostook County, thereby spurring economic growth. The effort has expanded with the installation of a second center in Presque Isle. The Center’s successful bid for the World Cup Biathlon 2004 is its most exciting accomplishment to date, fulfilling its original goal of attracting national and international competitions to the area.

Winter Olympic Sports Biathlon About The Biathlon is the joining together of two sports, cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. Biathlon skiers ski with rifles for a certain distance and then shoot the rifles at designated targets. After the race, the time taken to complete the race and the points deducted from shooting, which have been converted into time, are added and the one with the least total points is the winner.
The biathlon includes individual and relay races. Skiing is a demanding sport that requires strong legs that can produce a great driving force. Rifle shooting is a stationary sport in which competitors shoot at targets without moving. The biathlon is the combination of a stationary and a dynamic sport. After racing, the skier may have to take the time to catch his or her breath before shooting, and so waste valuable time.

Former Russian Olympic Champion Tries To Escape From Russian Justice In Germany
Former Olympic biathlon champion Alexander Tikhonov, accused of organising the attempt at the governor of the Kemerovo region, Aman Tuleyev, is now staying in the German city of Oberhof where the world biathlon championship is being held, the union of Russian biathlonists reported.
When the prosecutor's office of the Novosibirsk region relieved Alexander Tikhonov from the recognizance not to leave and allowed him to receive treatment in Moscow, on which he insisted, the defendant left Russia in the summer of 2001. Tikhonov's lawyers informed the law-enforcement bodies which are conducting investigation that Tikhonov was undergoing a course of treatment in a clinic of the Austrian city of Innsbruck. But it was written in the fax sent by the secretariat of the clinic that Tikhonov had already completed treatment and left the clinic in an unknown direction. Now the traces of the criminal sportsman led to Germany.
The Federal Security Service asked Interpol for help in establishing the champion's whereabouts.

Bjoerndalen won Norway's second gold of the Games
Ole Einar Bjoerndalen dug deep to win the men's 20-kilometre biathlon gold medal at the Winter Olympics. The Norwegian, who took part in a cross-country competition just two days earlier, held off the challenge of Germany's Frank Luck who took silver at Soldier Hollow. Victor Maigourov of Russia finished in the bronze medal position. Late call-up Jason Sklenar led Britain's standings with a finish of 48th out of 87 competitors.
Bjoerndalen celebrates his victory
Mike Dixon and Mark Gee struggled into 79th and 81st places respectively. Bjoerndalen put skiing power ahead of marksmanship to triumph. The 28-year-old won the individual 10km sprint four years ago at Nagano. This time, he missed two of his 20 targets to earn a two-minute penalty, yet still came home ahead of Luck in 51 minutes 03.3 seconds. The winner had to recover from the 30km cross-country on Saturday, when he finished sixth.
