WINTER OLYMPICS BIATHLON
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1960 BIATHLON was originally a tactic of survival rather than a sport. Northern Europeans skied to hunt for food and, later, skied with weapons to defend their countries. The word "biathlon" stems from the Greek word for two contests. Today it is interpreted as a joining of two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. In 1960, Biathlon joined the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM). But in 1993, an agreement was made to retain the Union as an umbrella body under which the UIPM and the IBU could act autonomously. It took effect in 1998, but the two sports maintain relations in various projects. Biathlon consists of eight events in the Olympic program. Men and women compete in a sprint, pursuit, individual and relay. Although all biathlon disciplines combine skiing and marksmanship, the sport features several distinct events. Sprint
During the sprint, women race 7.5km and men race 10km. Competitors stop twice and must hit all five targets with five bullets. For each target missed, athletes take a lap around the 150m penalty loop. The top 60 finishers of this competition qualify for the pursuit.

Military ski patrol was a demonstration sport at the first Winter Olympics in 1924 and again in 1928, 1936, and 1948. With some modifications, military ski patrol turned into the biathlon, which became an Olympic sport for men in 1960. The women's biathlon was added in 1992.

Biathlon is a dual-skills sport, combining fast skiing with expert marksmanship. In World Cup and Olympic competition, biathlon races are 7.5, 10 and 20 kilometers. Biathletes must complete a certain number of laps around a course, stopping at the shooting range several times during a race, aiming a .22-caliber rifle at five targets the size of silver dollars about 50 meters away.

    Did You Know?

Who Organizes Biathlon in the U.S.?

Who Oversees Biathlon in the World?

30-Second Guide to Biathlon Because early man used ski-like devices to travel while hunting with their bow and arrow, biathlon is one of the world's oldest sports. It didn't actually make the Olympic Winter Games, however, until 1960, making it one of the Games' newest disciplines. Biathletes race on snow using cross-country skis, and stop at predetermined intervals to shoot at targets using rifles. Did You Know?
    • The word "biathlon" is rooted in the Greek term for two games or two contests. In Olympic sport today, biathlon is represented as a combination of cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. When nearing the firing lane, biathletes intentionally slow down their skiing speed in order to reduce heavy breathing and to lower their heart rate. Once at the firing range, the athlete will take his or her shots between breaths. Biathlon can trace its root back to 3000 BC, which makes the sport the oldest of all Olympic Winter Games disciplines. Because of its tie to military activity, however, biathlon wasn't officially added to the Olympic schedule until 1960. Biathlon was a demonstration sport in four Olympic Winter Games between 1924 and 1948, but during that time it was referred to as "military patrol."

    • Biathlon is one of the oldest Olympic sports. It can trace its origins to 3000 BC when early hunters used skis to travel across snow and ice. The modern birth of biathlon has military ties because northern European soldiers used cross-country skis to patrol borders. The first-ever biathlon competitions were organized by Norwegian military units. Biathlon appeared as an Olympic demonstration sport four times, but debuted as a full-medal sport in 1960. Women's biathlon was added in 1992.
    Timeline
~3000 BC Early hunters used cross-country skis to travel across snow and ice while hunting with bow and arrow. 1700 AD Cross-country soldiers were used in the Great Scandinavian War that lasted until 1718. The first recorded biathlon race was organized by Norwegian soldiers. The first rifle and ski club was founded to assist in the development of military ski patrols. Biathlon was held as a demonstration sport under the name "military patrol" at the Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France. The renamed event "biathlon" first appeared as an official International Olympic Committee sport.

Venue: Nozawa Onsen , a town of 5,000 famous for its hot springs and which claims to be the birthplace of Japanese skiing, will play host to the biathlon events at the Nagano Games. Two 4km trails (A and B) will be laid out near the grandstand, which will be near the shooting range. The trails will meander through a relatively small area measuring about 1 square kilometer. Trail A will have a difference in elevation of 78 meters, and trail B a difference of 62 meters. Both trails will be 7 meters wide. 1994 Golds: Sergei Tchepikov and Sergei Tarassov of Russia won the 10km race and the 20km race respectively, and the German team won the relay. Myriam Bedard of Canada won both women's individual events, becoming the first athlete from North America to win an Olympic biathlon event. The Russia women won the relay. How It Works: The biathlon combines cross-country skiing with .22-caliber rifle shooting from both the standing and prone positions.
