BIATHLON: A BRIEF HISTORY
The term "biathlon" originates with the Greek "bi" meaning "two" and "athlon" meaning "competition" or "contest", and current use generally assigns the meaning to competitions of physical prowess, or "athletics." Thus, "biathlon" could be taken as the combination of any two competitions or sports.
Traditionally, however, the term is assigned to that sport marrying cross-country skiing and marksmanship. It is without question a test of physical end urance, mental discipline and great personal determination.
Remnants of ancient Scandinavian and Finnish art and pictographs depict hunters on skis dated as far back as 4000 years ago. As more and more of these men grouped together, competitions developed to determine who among them was the best. In the 18th century, biathlon played an integral role in military life, having become more a form of national protection that personal survival. The first recorded biathlon took place in 1767 among patrol units guarding the Swedish-Norwegian border. The first recorded ski club promoting skiing and marksmanship was formed in 1861 in Norway, to promote national defence among soldiers during the winter.

Brief History of the Olympic Games

Ancient Olympic Games The Olympic Games begun at Olympia in Greece in 776 BC. The Greek calendar was based on the Olympiad, the four-year period between games. The games were staged in the wooded valley of Olympia in Elis. Here the Greeks erected statues and built temples in a grove dedicated to Zeus, supreme among the gods. The greatest shrine was an ivory and gold statue of Zeus. Created by the sculptor Phidias, it was considered one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Scholars have speculated that the games in 776 BC were not the first games, but rather the first games held after they were organized into festivals held every four years as a result of a peace agreement between the city-states of Elis and Pisa. The Eleans traced the founding of the Olympic games to their King Iphitos, who was told by the Delphi Oracle to plant the olive tree from which the victors' wreaths were made. According to Hippias of Elis, who compiled a list of Olympic victors c.400 BC, at first the only Olympic event was a 200-yard dash, called a stadium. This was the only event until 724 BC, when a two-stadia race was added. Two years later the 24-stadia event began, and in 708 the pentathlon was added and wrestling became part of the games. This pentathlon, a five-event match consisted of running, wrestling, leaping, throwing the discus, and hurling the javelin. In time boxing, a chariot race, and other events were included.

This is Biathlon
Though a relatively unknown sport in the U.S., Biathlon is the most popular winter Olympic sport on television in Europe today. Why? you might ask. Because it is exciting!
Biathlon gots its Olympic start in 1936 Olympic Winter Games in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany. At that time, the Olympic event of Biathlon consisted of one race modeled after a military patrol. After World War II, Biathlon was absent from the Olympic agenda until the 20 kilometer individual event was added to the 1960 Winter Games in Squaw Valley. It has been a part of the Olympic program ever since, but not without changes.
Along with rule change has come technology, faster skis, target systems that show hits and misses instantly, and computer technology that instantly relays feedback from the target to the timing systems and to television production. All of this combined has allowed spectators to follow biathlon competitions with greater ease, understanding, and enthusiasm.
The target system used for the 2004 Biathlon World Cup in Fort Kent is state-of-the-art. Targets measure hits and misses by using a laser to detect the weight of the lead entering the black bullseye of the target. If the wieght measured by the laser equals over half the weight of a .22-caliber bullet, the target registers a hit, and the black target turns white.

30-Second History
  • Biathlon is one of the oldest Olympic sports. It can trace its origins to 3000 BC when early hunters used skis to travel across snow and ice. The modern birth of biathlon has military ties because northern European soldiers used cross-country skis to patrol borders. The first-ever biathlon competitions were organized by Norwegian military units. Biathlon appeared as an Olympic demonstration sport four times, but debuted as a full-medal sport in 1960. Women's biathlon was added in 1992.
Timeline
~3000 BC Early hunters used cross-country skis to travel across snow and ice while hunting with bow and arrow. 1700 AD Cross-country soldiers were used in the Great Scandinavian War that lasted until 1718. The first recorded biathlon race was organized by Norwegian soldiers. The first rifle and ski club was founded to assist in the development of military ski patrols. Biathlon was held as a demonstration sport under the name "military patrol" at the Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France. The renamed event "biathlon" first appeared as an official International Olympic Committee sport.
