"I've always wanted to win a gold medal," he told the U.S. Biathlon Association. "But before this year's World Championships, I am not sure I believed. Now, I honestly believe I can win a gold medal or get a top three."
Although biathlon is one winter Olympic sport in which the United States has never medaled, anyone in the top 30 has a chance.
"It just has to be your day," says Lyle Nelson, a four-time Olympian and biathlon manager for the Salt Lake Organizing Committee. For biathletes, "their" day must not only mean skiing the fastest but shooting the best.
Biathlon is a dual-skills sport, combining fast skiing with expert marksmanship. In World Cup and Olympic competition, biathlon races are 7.5, 10 and 20 kilometers. Biathletes must complete a certain number of laps around a course, stopping at the shooting range several times during a race, aiming a .22-caliber rifle at five targets the size of silver dollars about 50 meters away.

Wilhelm was precise in her shooting, making 10-of-10 on the Soldier Hollow target range. Teammate Uschi Disl, the most decorated female biathlete in Olympic history with seven medals, finished 36.4 seconds back to take the silver.
Disl could have made the race a lot closer if she hadn't missed her final target, forcing her to head to the penalty loop before entering the final lap.
Sweden's Magdalena Forsberg, the sport's dominant woman for the past five years, needed a furious finish to win her second bronze of the games. Forsberg edged Norwegian Liv Grete Skjelbreid-Poiree by 2.7 seconds.
Forsberg, who missed a shot early and was sixth entering the final lap, slumped to the snow after charging across the line.
Poiree, whose husband Raphael Poiree shot poorly in the 10-kilometer race earlier in the day and finished ninth, made all five of her shots at the first station, from a prone position. But her third shot of the final round, while standing, was a fraction of an inch off to the top of the black, circular target.
The Americans struggled, with Kara Salmela finishing 49th, Andrea Nahrgang 50th and Rachel Steer 60th.

  • THE ORIGIN OF OLYMPIC GAMES THE REVIVAL OF OLYMPIC GAMES THE ORIGIN OF WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES I /CHAMONIX, FRANCE, 1924/ ... WINTER OLYMPIC GAMES XVIII /NAGANO, JAPAN, 1998/
  • THE ORIGIN OF OLYMPIC GAMES
The idea of holding Olympic Games has its roots in Greek mythology. The first recorded Olympics were held in 776 B.C. They were sponsored to honor the god Zeus on the plain of Olympia in the west of the Peloponnesus Peninsula. The first recorded Olympics were won by an athlete from the town of Elida, Coroebus. In ancient Greece only free men of Greek origin could take part in the Olympics.Competitions were always tough, and the prize awarded to winners was a garland of wild olive, but beyond this the victorious athletes earned great honour and esteem not only in their native town but also in the Greek world as a whole.
    MODERN REVIVAL OF OLYMPIC GAMES
Baron de Coubertin, a Frenchman, inspired the Olympic revival. Owing to his great effort the International Olympic Committee was set up on June 23, 1894. To the present day the Committee is the highest governing body of the Olympic Movement. The first international competitions similar to ancient Greek Olympiads were held in the city of Athenes in 1896. They were held in 9 separate sportstrack and field, gymnastics, swimming, weight lifting, wrestling, shooting, fencing, cycling race and tennis. From that time on Olympic Games became a major international event in sports. They were held in many cities of the world, including Moscow /1980/.The Olympic cycle of four years was interrupted only three times: in 1916 because of the First World War and in 1940 and 1944 because of the Second World War.

They covered the distance in one hour, 27 minutes, 55 seconds, 30.6 seconds ahead of Norway in second, while Russia narrowly beat Bulgaria for bronze. Alexander Tikhonov, four times Olympic biathlon champion, has appealed to President Vladimir Putin to intervene for him with the investigators. The sportsman is accused of plotting to assassinate Aman Tuleyev, Kemerovo regional governor (Siberia). In an open letter to the federal President, he contends the investigating team trampls on his civil rights, RIA Novosti reports. In need of urgent surgery, Mr. Tikhonov is stranded in Novosibirsk as the investigators do not authorize his trip to Moscow even after several top-notch Novosibirsk surgeons have concluded that the patient should be operated in a Moscow hospital as local hospitals do not have necessary equipment available.

    CROSS-COUNTRY
It's not boring; it's a magnificent feat of fitness and endurance
Cross-country aficionados bummed over sparse coverage will get their fill of snowy swooshing this year. NBC has staked out over 30 camera positions along busy Soldier Hollow's trails and plans to televise more of the races than ever before. (The relatively action-packed relays air on NBC February 17 and 21.) But the skiing isn't exactly hair-raising, what with its lack of leaping, speeding, and spinning. The sport's want of "wow factor" is offset by its focus on fitness and endurance, says Paul Robbins, a spokesman for the U.S. ski team. Per Elofsson of Sweden, the defending World Cup champ, trains by running through swamps and roller skiing up mountains. Russia, Norway, Finland, and Italy are, with Sweden, on track to repeat past victories. The U.S. team is the strongest since 1984, Robbins says, but the Arctic countries live for this stuff. -Samantha Levine NORDIC COMBINED

History of Our Olympic Games Welcome to our web site!
Have you watched the Olympics on TV or better yet been there to experience it live? Did you ever wondered why the Olympics started? I did! If you want to be on or go to the Olympics, I think you first need to know about it. Why did the games start? At the original Olympics what games did they play? Also what games do they play today? Now, get ready for the world of the Olympics.
Have you ever wondered how the Olympics started? In Olympia, Greece the Olympic Games were held every four years. First Olympic game was recorded in 776 BC; that was about 3,000 years ago. At that time this great festival took place to honor the Greek gods. Olympics were held during the great festival. My resources say Olympics were held to please the various gods. One God, in particular, the most important was called Zeus. The Olympics were called Olympiad in Greece.
Now we know where the games are held, but we dont know what games they played? In the first thirteen Olympic games, there was only one event and that was the sprint. The sprint event was about one hundred and eight meters in length. Then later Pentathlon was added and it had different events. There was discus, javelin, jumping, running, and wrestling. After a while, they added Equestrian events and that included chariot racing and riding. The Ancient Olympics did have lots of events. They had two major events Equestrian and Pentathlon events.

A moment Brent Watts and his team proudly share. They designed the victory medals, which symbolize the Olympic spirit.
"We actually get to share a part of their moment. It's actually quite wonderful," Brent Watts of Axiom Designed Communications says.
Watts submitted several drawings to the Salt Lake Organizing Committee, and competed against 100 artists from around the world. The original designs evolved from a non-circular form, to an arrowhead, and one that included granite, gold, silver and bronze metals.
What you see around an athlete's neck is the final design.
"We wanted it to be in a different form, and from that we presented taking it and making it feel like a river rock, so it had something natural and part of the environment," Watts explains.
