Lloyd Ward becomes biathlete, but will continue as USOC CEO by Brian Olsen (Frozenbullet.com)
August 19, 2002 Lloyd Ward, who was hired last October as the new Chief Executive Officer for the US Olympic Committee, visited the Lake Placid Training Center in early August to, among other things, sample the sport of biathlon. Coached by 2002 Olympian Jeremy Teela, Ward succeeded in hitting a few targets on the range, which served as competition ground for the 1980 Winter Olympic Games. Ward began his tenure as USOC CEO on 1 November last year. His experience in the realm of sports management: none. Yet, the organization's President, Sandy Baldwin, said, "He will bring the USOC not only charismatic leadership but a great sense of being able to elevate the organization to the next level." There is no doubt that his leadership skills are world-class. Ward was Chairman and CEO of the appliance giant Maytag for fifteen months, until stepping down from the position in November 2000. While serving in his most recent management tenure as Chairman and CEO of iMotors.com, he was responsible for a business unit that enjoyed $100 million in sales.

"Action; special effects; artistic, great script; actors .... Sounds like a Hollywood film, but those are what describe xczone's newest action-packed X-country skiing movie High Velocity. There is no other like it!" - Sharon Donnelly, Olympian, PanAm Gold Medalist Triathlon "Another group that has been setting new trends in the sport is the combo of David McMahon and Lise Meloche with their new video called 'High Velocity'. This is the second video they have produced and it is definitely changing the rules as to how XC ski vids should be made. This isn't your dinky little XC ski video that shows you what good technique should look like in a wide open field, with lots of slow motion 'analyse this' shots. With some good tunes and great action shots, I would compare 'High Velocity' to an extreme skiing video version of Cross Country skiing. (...) Good job guys." - Philippe Villeneuve, Canadian National Ski Team

Biathlon:
A Sport for Your Body and Mind
By Laura Clark
Curt Schreiner competing at the World Cup Biathlon Competition in Canada.
Perhaps you're a mountain biker, runner, or skier, and although you hate to admit it, even to yourself, you've become a bit bored with your usual routine. Still, whenever you follow the advice of experts and attempt to add a bit of variety by cross training, you are left feeling vaguely dissatisfied. Happily, a cure is waiting right around the corner in Day, about twenty miles northwest of Saratoga Springs, at Jim Schreiner's Saratoga Biathlon Club. To add to its uniqueness, the course lies in one of those magical areas that attract snow, even when the rest of the state is depressingly brown. Twice so far, the Saratoga Biathlon Club has rescued the Empire State Games when lack of snow threatened to cancel the Nordic events. So what does it take to get started? Not surprisingly, the sport is much more than the sum of its parts. An athlete must have the individual skills down, and also know how to combine them. The biathlete must make an instant transition from speed to hardly-dare-to-breathe stillness, from total energy output to intense concentration. More than merely putting one foot ahead of the other, the biathlon is truly a thinking person's sport. Patrick Clancy, a club member, mentioned that he was becoming a bit bored with plain skiing and took it up as a means of adding yet another dimension to his favorite sport.
