Jeremy Teela, a surprising 14th in Monday's race, was the top American on Wednesday, taking 20th. Jay Hakkinen was 26th, and Lawton Redman 54th.
Raphael Poiree, bidding to become the first Frenchman to win a biathlon individual medal, made the first five shots with his .22-caliber rifle and was the fastest skier after the first stage. But then he missed the first and fifth target on the final round, falling to ninth.
Frode Andresen, who finished second to his countryman Bjoerndalen in this event four years ago, repeated Poiree's mistakes on the final shoot and wound up eighth. But the biggest flub was by Russian Pavel Rostovtsev, who was flawless through nine shots but then missed to the upper left on his final attempt.
He let out a holler before taking his required penalty lap that ate up about 25 seconds. He finished sixth.
Fischer missed one shot and Perner none.

ASSOCIATED PRESS February 13, 2002 "Before the start, I was a little bit afraid because I went so late with the start number Wednesday," said Bjoerndalen, who was the last top contender to begin the Soldier Hollow Course. "For me, it was a little bit tough for my head. But I (did) my race, and it was OK." "For me, it's not important if I make one more gold or one less," Bjoerndalen said. "For me, it's more important to make every time that I race a perfect race, and if I'm good enough to win, I win. But if some other guy is better than me that day, I will be satisfied." Jeremy Teela, a surprising 14th in Monday's race, was the top American Wednesday, taking 20th. The best U.S. finish ever in the event was 19th, by Lyle Nelson in 1980. Jay Hakkinen was 26th, and Lawton Redman 54th. "Based on what happened Monday and today, these are our best results ever," said Jerry Kokesh, the U.S. Biathlon Association development director. Not only did Bjoerndalen have a steady trigger finger, he's an exceptionally strong skier, finishing sixth in the 30-kilometer Nordic race earlier this week.

WINTER OLYMPICS BIATHLON
OLYMPIC SPORT SINCE 1960 BIATHLON was originally a tactic of survival rather than a sport. Northern Europeans skied to hunt for food and, later, skied with weapons to defend their countries. The word "biathlon" stems from the Greek word for two contests. Today it is interpreted as a joining of two sports: cross-country skiing and rifle shooting. In 1960, Biathlon joined the International Modern Pentathlon Union (UIPM). But in 1993, an agreement was made to retain the Union as an umbrella body under which the UIPM and the IBU could act autonomously. It took effect in 1998, but the two sports maintain relations in various projects. Biathlon consists of eight events in the Olympic program. Men and women compete in a sprint, pursuit, individual and relay. Although all biathlon disciplines combine skiing and marksmanship, the sport features several distinct events. Sprint
During the sprint, women race 7.5km and men race 10km. Competitors stop twice and must hit all five targets with five bullets. For each target missed, athletes take a lap around the 150m penalty loop. The top 60 finishers of this competition qualify for the pursuit.

The silver went to another middle-ranked biathlete, Yelena Petrova of the Ukraine. Ursula Disl of Germany skied and shot her way to a second consecutive bronze medal. Despite falling snow and a gusting wind, all three missed only one of the 20 targets, which meant cross-country skiing decided the winner. Dafovska, 22, finished the race in 54 minutes, 52 seconds. Petrova's time was 55:09.8 and Disl's was 55:17.9. Although snowfall tapered off toward the end of the race, the weather conditions slowed times on the course and made shooting difficult. Some biathletes had to wipe snowflakes from their eyes before pulling the trigger. Wind was light but changed directions four times. Dafovska, an administrator from Tchepelare, ranks only 51st in the World Cup standings. She didn't take up biathlon, which combines cross-country skiing and shooting, in 1992, but she made the national team a year later. The best American effort came from Stacey Wooley, 29, of Newbury, Vt., who finished 55th in a slow time of 1:03:57.3. But she shot well, missing only twice.

Community Olympic Development Program - Biathlon
2002-2003 Biathlon Schedule

Biathlon is the exciting sport that combines the physical demands of fast-paced cross-country skiing with the precision and control of rifle marksmanship. Overall, biathlon is becoming one of the fastest growing spectator sports in Europe. In the event, the biathlete is required to race several kilometers on challenging terrain with a .22 caliber rifle harnessed to their back, and then shoot either standing or prone (lying on the stomach) at targets 50 meters away. Skiing and shooting are alternated, requiring the athlete to push their body to their limits during skiing, and then quickly calm their body and heartbeat enough to be able to hit the targets.
The Minnesota Biathlon Community Olympic Development Program combines local weekly training with intensive instruction during camps at a variety of training locations in Minnesota and Olympic Training Centers throughout the nation. Along with local training, biathletes participate in camps. Nearly 70 CODP biathletes train throughout the state. The Minnesota Biathlon Community Olympic Development Program is the largest and most successful junior biathlon program in the nation.

Biathlon

Sprinting up a long flight of stairs before threading a needle gives an idea of what it's like to compete in Biathlon. This sport combines the endurance of cross-country skiing with the precision and calm of marksmanship.
History
Biathlon originated long ago. Examples of ancient people using skis and weapons abound. Ancient hunters and warriors discovered that they could preserve energy and increase efficiency by combining skiing and shooting. Rock paintings dating to around 3000 BC show hunters with bow and arrows moving on wooden sliders. Hunting on skis was practiced in Northern Europe, Asia and North America. Chinese hunters tracked wildlife using "winged horses" on the feet as they moved through the snow. During the Middle Ages shooting on skis became a popular form of warfare and by the end of the 19th century, soldiers were being trained on skis in Scandinavia, Russia, Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Biathlon Competition
Competitions combining skiing and shooting were first organized in 1776 in Norway, where participants fired rifles while racing. The 1st Olympic Winter Games in Chamonix, France included a ski patrol race on its program. This event was organized as a demonstration and was repeated at the 1928, 1936, and 1948 Winter Games. It was not until 1949 that the International Olympic Committee decided to accept Sweden's proposal to include a combination of cross country skiing and shooting in the Olympic program as an individual competition open to civilian competitors. The first Olympic Biathlon was held in Squaw Valley, California, in 1960.

Biathlon in the news The name biathlon is used to describe any sporting event made up of two disciplines, but usually the winter sport which combines cross-country skiing and rifle shooting is meant. As a TV and spectator sport , biathlon is very popular in Germany and parts of Scandinavia
History
The sport has its origins in an exercise for Norwegian soldier s. The first known competition took place in when border patrol companies competed against each other. Gradually the sport became more common throughout Scandinavia as an alternative training for the military Called military patrol , the combination of skiing and shooting was demonstrated at the Olympic Winter Games in and , but did not gain Olympic recognition then, as the small number of competing countries disagreed on the rules (see also Governing body, below). The first World Championship in the sport was held in in Austria , and in the sport was finally included in the Olympic Games

Surprise! NBC Discovers Biathlon At the 2002 Winter Olympics by Joseph P. Tartaro
Executive Editor
Over more than 20 years as editor of Gun Week I have had occasion every four years or so to excoriate American sports reporters in general, and television in particular, for its failure to reasonably report on the shooting sports, especially during the Olympics. Then the Olympic schedule changed; the Winter and Summer Games were staggered so that while they each take place every four years, they were staggered so that the TV networks that bid so much money for exclusive broadcast rights would have some kind of Olympic sports programming every two years.
Of course, that change gave me an opportunity to whip them for their failings regarding shooting sports every two years instead of four. And, while I was preparing to do so again for the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City, the National Broadcasting Company (NBC) suddenly surprised me.
Print Reporters
On Feb. 14, The Buffalo News ran an interesting article on the biathletes written by Bucky Gleason, who was covering the Winter Olympics from Utah. Gleason began his piece with an anecdote involving two of the US biathletes, Jeremy Teela and Hakkinen.
According to Gleason, last fall Teela and Hakkinen were walking through a metal detector in the Munich (Germany) airport when they triggered the alarm system.
