November 14, 2003 COUNTRY DESCRIPTION: Bhutan is a small land-locked Himalayan country led by a king, and is in transition to a constitutional monarchy. Facilities for tourism are limited. There is no U.S. diplomatic or consular presence in Bhutan . The U.S. Embassy in New Delhi handles all assistance to U.S. citizens. ENTRY/EXIT REQUIREMENTS: Independent travel is not permitted. Further information cam be obtained through the Department of Tourism, P.O. Box 126 , Thimphu , Bhutan, telephone (975) 2-32351, 2-32352; fax (975) 2-323695 or at www.tourism.gov.bt . Entry is available only via India , Bangladesh , Nepal , and Thailand . The border with China is closed. Visitors to Bhutan are required to book travel through a registered tour operator in Bhutan . This can be done directly or through a travel agent abroad. The minimum daily tariff is set by the Department of Tourism, Bhutan and cannot be negotiated. The rate includes all accommodations, all meals, transportation, services of licensed guides and porters, and cultural programs where and when available. The rate is the same for both cultural tours and treks. The only carrier servicing Bhutan is Druk Air, the Bhutanese government airline. Gharial Translocation WWF Bhutan began its conservation work in 1977 by
WWF and its collegues in the Eastern Himalayas are working to strengthen antipoaching measures, to stop illegal trade and to reduce consumption of tiger based medicines, and to create incentives so that tigers are worth more alive than dead to their human neighbors.
Bengal Tiger providing training opportunities for Bhutanese nationals and gradually evolved into a full country program facilitating severaL conservation projects, that are currently being implemented by national agencies. Since the establishment of a program office in Thimphu in 1992, WWF has worked closely with the Royal Government of Bhutan to develop an integrated and collaborative conservation program.

Bhutan er et lille kongedømme beliggende i 5.000 – 7.000 meters højde i den østlige del af Himalaya-bjergene. Med sine 40.077 km² er Bhutan lidt mindre end Danmark. Befolkningsantallet skønnes at være 760.000. I Bhutan er kongen statsoverhoved. Befolkningen har ikke ret til at danne politiske partier. Der findes en nationalforsamling bestående af 150 medlemmer. 105 medlemmer vælges af befolkningen, 12 medlemmer udpeges af munkevæsenet og 33 medlemmer udpeges af kongen. Regeringen nomineres af kongen, men efterfølgende skal ministrene så godkendes af Nationalforsamlingen. Nationalforsamlingen mødes i princippet to gange om året men kan ekstraordinært indkaldes af kongen. Nationalforsamlingen fungerer som et rådgivende organ for regeringen. Langt hovedparten af befolkningen bor på landet. Omkring 100.000 er bosiddende i byområder. Heraf skønnes de 35.000 at bo i hovedstaden Thimphu og de 24.000 i den næststørste by Phuentsholing. Herudover er der mindre byer på 5.000 - 10.000 indbyggere.
