A Brief History of Bhutan There were many fires and earthquakes in the distant past of Bhutan, and many important documents were destroyed, yet there were certain parts of history saved in sacred places. It is believed that the name Bhutan is from the Sanskrit 'Bhotant,' which means "the end of Tibet," or the Bhu-uttan, meaning "high land." Most people refer to themselves as Kruk Yul, which means "the Hand of The Thunder Dragon," (as thunder echoed across the sky when it was being formed). The Bhutanese also refer to themselves as Drukpa people. In 1616, Shabdrung Nqawang, a Tibetan lama arrived in Bhutan. He formed the dual system of religions and secular government, building the Dzongs system. In 1644, Shabdrung defeated Gushi Khan, the Mongul leader. Then in 1647, Shabdrung defeated him again, as Gushi Khan invaded Bhutan again. Shabdrung died in 1651. Shabdrung practices slowly yielded its power to Druk Desi, who lost control to the Penlops (residential governors). In the 1770s, Bhutan began to encounter the outside world. Moving southward, Bhutan collided with the British East India Company. In 1772, the British entered more into the region and looked on the Bhutanese people with disfavor. Bhutan then expanded eastward. After several clashes with the British, the Treaty of Sinchula was signed in 1865, giving way to an end of hostilities and bringing in peace and friendship. Trade also was opened up. Bhutan gave up rule over some territory, including the Duars to the British, and the British in turn, gave them 50,000 rupees.

8 days RECOMMEND THIS SITE HISTORY Before the 16th century, numerous clans and noble families ruled in different valleys throughout Bhutan, quarrelling among themselves and with Tibet. This changed in 1616 with the arrival of Ngawang Namgyal, a monk of the Drukpa Kagyu school of Buddhism from Tibet. He taught throughout the region and soon established himself as the religious ruler of Bhutan with the title Shabdrung Rinpoche. He repelled attacks from rival lamas and Tibetan forces and transformed the southern valleys into a unified country called Druk Yul (Land of the Dragon). While the political system he established lasted until the beginning of the 20th century, the announcement of the Shabdrung's death in 1705 was followed by 200 years of internal conflict and political infighting. Instability lasted until 1907 when Ugyen Wangchuck was elected, by a unanimous vote of Bhutan's chiefs and principal lamas, as hereditary ruler of Bhutan. Thus the first king was crowned and the Wangchuck dynasty began. Over the following four decades, he and his heir, King Jigme Wangchuck, brought the entire country under the monarchy's direct control. Upon independence in 1947, India recognized Bhutan as a sovereign country.

Book Review Published on Tuesdays Features: Magazine Literary Review Metro Plus Open Page ... Book Review Socio-political history of Bhutan THE BOOK under review is literally a Himalayan work in terms of the socio-political history of the Kingdom of Bhutan. This scholarly work is the result of the tenacity and perseverance of Dr. A. C. Sinha. It is also a combination of exploratory and analytical methodology, including field study par excellence. It is an admirable work on the Bhutanese theocratic community turning into a nation-state. This veritable "gazetteer'' on Bhutan is divided into three parts. Part one on "Tradition'' consists of environment and ethnicity, religion and history and the given political system under theocracy, monarchy and administration. Part two on "Transition'' from the traditional structure deals with the emergence of the Wangchuk principality, managing the frontiers, advent of the "Lhotshampas" and introduction of modern education as an instrument of effective transition in society. Part three on "Transformation" reports on the contemporary Bhutanese scenario in terms of political culture and national dilemma, ethnic stalemate and nation building. The book is further divided into 10 chapters, each of them dealing with separate micro themes in a detailed and critical manner.

88. BHUTAN
bhutan s history parallels Buddhism s following in the Himalayas and to properly understand bhutan s history one also needs to understand its religion.
http://www.iip.co.jp/bhutan/about/rekishi_e.html
The name Bhutan appears to derive from the ancient Indian term Bhotanta which means the end of the land of the Bhots. B hot was the Sanskrit term for Tibetans, thus Bhutan could mean the end of the land of Tibet. It could also extend from the Sanskrit word Bhu'uttan or high land. No one seems to be sure. Ancient Tibetan writers called their fertile neighbour Lho Mon or Mon Yul, Paradise of the South or Land of the Monpas. The Bhutanese themselves refer to their country as Druk Yul or the Land of the Peaceful Dragon. Druk meaning dragon and extending from the predominant Drukpa school of Tibetan Buddhism. Bhutan's history parallels Buddhism's following in the Himalayas and to properly understand Bhutan's history one also needs to understand its religion. M ystery surrounds Bhutan's distant past, as books and papers were lost in consecutive fires at the national printing works and at Punakha Dzong in 1828 and 1832. And then a massive earthquake in 1896 and a fire in Paro Dzong destroyed all but a few of the records that outlasted the first disasters. Despite these setbacks, enough reliable information has been recorded to piece together a history which sets apart this small kingdom from others in its vicinity. B hutan was not unified under a central authority until the 17th Century, however, the religious presence in the country had been acting as a spiritual cohesion for many years. It was in 747AD that Padma Sambhava who is known as Guru Rimpoche made his legendary trip from Tibet across the mountains flying on a tigress's back. He arrived in the Paro Valley at Takstang Lakhang,Tiger's Nest. A monastery now perches precariously on the cliff's face as a permanent memory to his name. Guru Rimpoche is the father of the Tantric strain of Mahayana Buddhism practised in Bhutan. His eight manifestations are worshipped in temples throughout the kingdom and wherever he visited in the kingdom is today a pilgrimage site highly revered by Bhutanese. Guru Rimpoche is not only recognised as the father of the Nyingmapa religious school but he is also considered to be the second Buddha.

http://www.newint.org/issue196/profile.htm
new internationalist
issue 196 - June 1989 Bhutan Bhutan calls itself Druk Yul, the dragon kingdom. Snuggling on the eastern end of the Himalayan range, between India and China, it is relatively inaccessible. Government policy has been to use that inaccessibility to the country’s advantage. No more than 3,000 foreign tourists are admitted in one year for fear of foreign influences taking a hold on the way of life of the country’s mountain people, whose language, Buddhist religion and culture are all closely related to those of the people of Tibet. The tourists spend about US$1.8 million a year, providing an important contribution to the national exchequer, and the ambitious Sixth Development Plan. The plan makes the preservation and promotion of Bhutan’s rich cultural heritage one of its main objectives. An important aspect of that heritage is the monarchy. King Jigme Singhe Wangchuck sits on the Dragon throne from where he rules his people as both head of state and head of government. But unlike his forebears in a dynasty that was established early this century, the present king does not enjoy absolute powers. Since the constitution was amended in 1969, the king has been accountable to the people through the National Assembly, which can vote for his dismissal. In practice the people seem to look with favour on their young Western-educated monarch. The king also chairs the national planning commission, and has shown a remarkable ability to attract foreign aid to his remote and undeveloped land. As well as diversifying from an overwhelmingly agricultural economy by encouraging small-scale industry, the current development plan emphasises the need to raise the below-20 per cent literacy level and to bring down the high rate of infant mortality. Bhutan is highly dependent on aid from abroad, the bulk of it coming from India, which has a sort of protector status.

WELCOME TO THE KINGDOM BHUTAN. Many eastern classics and books of wisdom have referred to the Himalayas as the abode of the gods and home to the immortals. These descriptions did not stem merely from the majesty and grandeur of the natural surroundings but perhaps alluded to a special environment where communion with the divine was possible through contemplation and meditation. And so since time immemorial, ascetics, scholars, philosophers and pilgrim have been drawn irresistibly to these remote and rugged mountains in their personal search for wisdom, inspiration, solitude and happiness. BHUTAN is a country nestled in the eastern Himalayas. The country has been visited by a great many saints, mystics, scholars and pilgrims over the centuries who not only came for their personal elucidation, but blessed the land and its people with an invaluable spiritual and cultural legacy that has shaped every facet of Bhutanese lives. Visitors and guests to the country will be surprised that the culture and the traditional lifestyle is still richly intact and at the degree to which it permeates all strands of modern day secular life. From the traditional woven garments to the prayer flags on high mountain slopes, from the built environment to the natural environment, from the religious mask dances to the folk dances, this cultural heritage is proudly evident and offers a unique cultural setting.
