Back to Home Bhutan People The official estimate of Bhutan's population in 1990 was about 600,000 but other sources estimate the population for 2000 was just under 2 million. Those living in Bhutan of Nepali origin have been excluded from the official census since 1990 which results in such a large discrepancy in population numbers. Bhutan has four major ethic groups: Bhutia, Sharchops, Nepali, and other indigenous groups. The Bhutia, who are descended from Tibetans, live in the central and northern regions of Bhutan. This ethnic group basically dominates politics in Bhutan particularly with it's contribution of government officials and monks that come from it.

Overview and History
INTRODUCTION

The story of Bhutan unfolds with every river, every bridge, every hill, every dzong , every flutter of its prayer flags, every turn of its prayer wheels, its dances and tsechus , its crafts and traditions. Here, history, legend, and religion coexist and are inextricably linked. Not a rock moves without the sanction of the priests, without the invocation of the gods.
The landscape is breathtakingly beautiful - massive dzongs chortens , and stupas , and beautiful buildings, with colourful prayer flags dotting the countryside at strategic places. What makes Bhutan special are its people - gentle, fun loving, earthy, living and breathing their culture. The Bhutanese are a religious people - they are deeply rooted in their traditions and families - and yet have a gay, charming irreverence.
For Bhutan an era of economic and technological isolation is over. To an outsider the country seems to be at a crossroad - holding on to its traditions and values while opening itself to other cultures and influences. Its cultural heritage, a vital source of its identity is, simultaneously, vulnerable to Western influences and also securely protected from it by government legislation. Many traditional techniques are under threat and cheaper foreign imports are gradually substituting local handicrafts. The Bhutanese are, however, determined to forge their own particular blend of technology, global influences, and traditional wisdom and culture, and are striving to balance the old with the new.

The history of Bhutan
Till well into the 17th Century, Bhutan was split up into small independent principalities. After the arrival of Buddhism, during the seventh century, the various Buddhist schools began sharing the power in the country with the old aristocratic families. The cleric Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel united the independent principalities into one state. After his death the theocracy disintegrated and the provincial lords fought to gain control over the central power. Only the establishment of the monarchy in 1907 brought peace again. Today the fourth King of Bhutan is leading his country into modern times.

The first immigrants apparently reached Bhutan 2000 B.C. Until today, however, there have not been any archeological investigations in Bhutan. It is therefore difficult to shed light on its history before the arrival of Buddhism. Occasionally, while ploughing their fields, farmers found tools made out of stone, which they considered to be the weapons of gods or celestial deities which had fallen down on Earth during their wars. The only stone axe that has so far been investigated scientifically could be dated in the period from 2000 to 1500 B.C.

Prehistory
Archeological finds suggest the mountain valleys of Bhutan have been inhabited for several thousand years. The Bhutanese are related to the Tibetans to the north, sharing physical, linguistic, and cultural traits, indicating that at some unknown time in the past a significant migration of Tibetans arrived over the Himalayan mountain passes to establish the base of the present population.
Arrival of Buddhism
In the eight century the Indian Guru Padmasambhava arrived in Bhutan, bringing Buddhism and established a number of temples and monasteries, including the famous Taktshang monastery built high on a cliff face above Paro valley.
Bhutanese Emerges as a Country
Until the early 1600s, Bhutan existed as a patchwork of minor warring fiefdoms until unified by the Tibetan lama and military leader Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyal . Books About Bhutan: So Close to Heaven, The Vanishing Buddhist Kingdoms of the Himalayas by Barbara Crossette is an excellent account of Bhutan's history and culture. The author is a New York Times correspondent who has spent considerable time in Bhutan and other Himalayan regions. Published in 1995, the book discusses some of the current development and political problems facing Bhutan. Dreams of the Peaceful Dragon is a traveller's account of a walk across Bhutan in the 1970s, before the road between Bumthang and Mongar was completed. It gives a good picture of trekking in Bhutan. Joanna Lumley in the Kingdom of the Thunder Dragon is by Joanna Lumley, the co-star of the BBC programme Absolutely Fabulous. Her grandfather was a political officer in Sikkim; the book is based on a TV programme that traced his trek through the country in the 1930s. The Raven Crown by Michael Aris is the definitive history of Bhutan's monarchy. Aris, who lived in Bhutan from 1967 to 1972, is the leading western authority on Bhutan's history. The book is lavishly illustrated with rare photographs of the early days of Bhutan that help show what a unique civilisation existed in the early 20th century. The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying by Sogyal Rimpoche is a translation of Guru Rimpoche's Tibetan Book of the Dead. It's a sophisticated Himalayan Buddhist text, but worth a look if you are especially interested in learning about some of Bhutan's religious foundations.

Area 46,620 sq km Population Capital Thimphu Languages Dzongka, English Currency Ngultrum INTRODUCTION Bhutan, the land of the peaceful thunder dragon, is known by many names. The original name from the times of Marco Polo was "Bootan,” but the natives prefer to call the country "Druk Yul." Many people haven't even heard about Bhutan, so quiet has been the little kingdom, perched up in the Himalayas. The nation is not involved with the Industrial Age, the World Wars, nor the arms race, and, until recently, not even cyberspace. A land with a vibrant and orthodox culture, Bhutan is often referred to as the “living museum” of the world. Location The kingdom of Bhutan lies in the eastern Himalayas, between Tibet to the north, the Indian territories of Assam and West Bengal to the south, and Arunachal Pradesh to the east and Sikkim to the west. The kingdom has a total area of about 47,000 square kilometers. It spreads between meridians 89°E and 93°E, and latitudes 27°N and 29°N. Climate The climate is variable. It is tropical in the southern plains. In the central valleys, one experiences cool winters and hot summers, while in the Himalayas severe winters and cool summers are prevalent.

History
Not much is known about Bhutan's past prior to the 8th century, because historical documents have been destroyed in various fires and earthquakes. It was in the 8th century that Guru Rinpoche (the second Buddha) arrived in Bhutan from Tibet. He is the father of Nyingma Buddhism, which is currently practiced in Eastern Bhutan, and he is credited with bringing Buddhism to Bhutan. There is some disagreement on the origin of the name "Bhutan," but many people believe it is derived from the Sanskrit term "Bhotanta," which means "the end of the land of the Bhots." "Bhots" is the Sanskrit term for "Tibetans." The Bhutanese themselves refer to their country as "Druk Yul""the land of the Peaceful Dragon"and to themselves as "Drukpa." They refer to their religion as "Drukpa Kagyupa," which is currently practiced in Western Bhutan. "Druk" means "dragon." The name was given to a Tibetan monastery by a Tibetan lama (Tsangpa Gyare) after he heard the thunder dragons in the sky when he was searching for a place to build his monastery. The Drukpa Kagyu lineage of Buddhism is named after that monastery and the term was brought to Bhutan by the Drukpa lamas who left the Tibetan monastery and settled in Western Bhutan in the 11th and 12th centuries. Until the beginning of the 16th century, Bhutan was a fragmented country with many local chiefs controlling their own areas. In 1616, a lama by the name of Ngawang Namgyal, a descendent of Tsangpa Gyare, came to Bhutan from Tibet, after being instructed to do so by the deity Mahakala. As he wandered Western Bhutan, teaching Buddhism, he became more politically powerful, and eventually became the religious and political ruler of Bhutan, bearing the title "Shabdrung Rinpoche."
