    Geography and Environment
Bhutan is a land-locked country lying in the eastern Himalayas and is nestled between Tibet (to the north) and India (to the south, east, and west). Its total area is about 47,000 square kilometers. The country can be divided into three geographic regions. The northern and western borders of Bhutan contain the highest mountains in the country, the Great Himalayas, reaching heights of approximately 7,550 meters. The mountains gradually lose height as they extend southward, becoming the high forested hills and valleys of the Inner Himalayas. These central districts contain Bhutan's largest towns, and altitudes across the central region range from about 1,100 meters to 3,750 meters. The altitude of Thimphu is about 2,300 meters. Southern Bhutan lies at the foothills of the Himalayas and is mostly semitropical forest and bamboo jungle, and the altitudes there range from roughly 300 meters to 1,350 meters. There are four distinct seasons in Bhutan, with spring being the most beautiful time of year, when the rhododendron begin to bloom. The summer months are warm and rainy. When the monsoon ends, the skies become brilliant blue and clear and remain so through November. Autumn is the most popular season for travel to Bhutan, in part because it's a great time of year to view the Himalaya mountain range and to trek. The winter months are cold and clear, and in Thimphu, it frequently snows. The temperature in Thimphu ranges from approximately degrees Celsius in January to 25 degrees Celsius in July. The southern plains near the Indian border are warmer and more tropical than the higher central regions, thus the climate is more temperate and the winters tend to be warmer. In the Great Himalaya areas at the northern and western borders, it snows year-round.

The princely Kingdom of Bhutan is a landlocked country, about 300 km long and 150 km wide encompassing an area of 46,500 square kilometers. Located between longitude 88 45’ and 92 10’ East and latitudes 26 40’ and 28 15’ North in the Eastern Himalayas, it is bounded by India in South and South-West and Tibetan autonomous region of China in the North and North-West respectively. Virtually the entire country is mountaineous, and ranges in elevation from 100m along the indian border to the 7,554m Kulha Gangri peak on the Tibetan border. These two extremes frame a landscape which stretches from sub-tropical to arctic like conditions. The maximum East-West stretch of the country is approximately 300 km and north-South about 150 km. Physiography Talking in geomorphologic terms, Bhutan is distinctively divisible into three lateral zones from South to North. Incidentally, this zonation is more or less applicable to meteorological, ethnographical and geographical divisions of the country.

Geography The Kingdom of Bhutan covers an area of approximately 46,500 square kilometers and lies south of the Tibetan hinterland and north of the Indian states of Assam and West Bengal. Located in the heart of the Himalayan mountain range, Bhutan is a landlocked country surrounded by mountains in the north and west. The terrain is amongst the most rugged and mountainous in the world. The land rises from an elevation of 100 metres above sea level in the south to more than 7,000 metres in the north. As a result, the climate is varied and extreme. Southern Bhutan is generally hot and humid in summer to pleasant in the winter months, while the high Himalayan Mountains in northern Bhutan are under perpetual snow. Climates can vary considerably between valleys and within valleys depending on the altitude. Rainfall, in particular, can differ within relatively short distances and the annual rainfall is concentrated during the monsoon season and from mid-June to September. The immense beauty of the Himalayas is contained in Bhutan’s diverse landscape. Cascading rivers, conifers, wild rhododendrons and Blue Poppies, long sweeping valleys, fields of maize and tall, imposing white-capped peaks are only a few poetic references. Bhutan lies in South-Asia, between India and China. With a total surface area of 46.500 square kilometers, it has about the size of Switzerland, but only roughly 670.000 inhabitants. The common border with India is 605 kilometers long and the one with China is 470 kilometers. Its geographic coordinates are: 27 30 N, 90 30 E. The climatic conditions in the various parts of the country are very diverse. In the south the climate is predominately sub-tropical or tropical. The valleys of Central Bhutan have a moderate climate with cool winters and hot summers. In the mountains, the winters are extremely harsh and the summers are rather cool. During the rainy season, especially in the southern parts of the country, extreme flooding frequently occurs.

The topography of the country is primarily mountainous with a few fertile valleys and savannahs. Only two percent of the total surface area is suitable for agriculture. Six percent of the land is used for pasture. The largest part of the surface area of Bhutan is occupied by forests and woods. Only 340 square kilometers of Bhutan are artificially irrigated. The natural resources of Bhutan are wood and it has a huge potential in hydraulic energy. A few important power plant projects are currently being developed.
