GEOGRAPHY
Rationale
The geography syllabus in classes IX and X deals with the principles of Geography and World Studies, Bhutan Geography and study of topo sheet. It also provides pupils with opportunities to identify and locate and learn about important physical features, climate and vegetation belts of Asia; physical features, distribution of agricultural products, minerals, and population and chief cities of South Asia; and physical features and selected places and dzongs of Bhutan. The Principles of Geography and World Studies cover all the phenomena on the earth's surface and explain the principles of day and night, seasons, climate, surface features, erosion, plant and animal life as well as distribution and development of different human communities and activities in different regions of the world. This is largely aimed at development of understanding in the learners the inter-relationship between different elements of the environment and the processes which take place in the environment leading to changes in the environment in order that such an understanding would help them to conserve the resources, protect and live in harmony with the environment. Bhutan Geography deals with the natural and man-made systems. It is aimed at providing the learners with a good knowledge of the land formation, climatic conditions and their impact on the vegetation and the activities of the people in order to develop a better understanding of the country. It also helps them to become acquainted with the richness of Bhutan's natural resources and at the same time create in them an awareness of the likely consequences of overuse so that they would appreciate the need to make prudent decisions in the use of the available resources.

Social Studies Unit Coordinator: Tandin Dorji Background History The creation of Social Studies Section can be traced back to thee establishment of Curriculum and Textbook Development Division (CTDD) in 1985. Laying emphasis on Bhutanising the Social Studies School Curriculum the Section under the aegis of CTDD took up the enormous task of developing syllabuses, manuals and textbooks which were most suitable to the need of the Bhutanese children. Initially there were no Sections as such but each subject was looked after by a subject specialist. The subjects falling in the category of Social Studies were looked after by the following specialists: i) Environmental Studies (EVS) was looked after by Mr. Mencha Wangdi from 1985. He was involved in developing EVS manuals from Classes PP to III. However, after EVS was translated into Dzongkha in 1995 it was jointly looked after by Lopen Tshering, Mrs.Tshering Dolkar and Mr. Namgay Dukpa. Lopen Dorji Wangchuck, still in office, was then appointed as the EVS coordinator from March 1998. ii) History was looked after by Mr. Namgay Dukpa since 1988. He was involved in developing History for Classes VI-VIII. On his transfer Mrs. Tshering Dolkar took up the responsibility in 1991.

Border countries: Tibetan autonomous region of China to the north, and India to the west, south and east.
Physical Divisions
Bhutan can be divided into three major areas: the southern foothills, inner Himalayas and higher Himalayas. The southern foothills rise from the tropical plains to a height of 1,500 m but are only about 20 kms wide. The inner Himalayas gradually rise to about 3,000m and contain the broad river valleys of central Bhutan, the economic and cultural heartland of the country. The northern region comprises the main Himalayan range of the high mountains and alpine vegetation where the population is sparse.
Climate
There are three distinct climatic zones corresponding broadly to the main geographical divisions of the country.
  • Southern belt: hot, humid climate. Temperatures are fairly even throughout the year between 15 degrees Celsius and 30 degrees Celsius. Rainfall ranges between 2,500 and 5,000 millimeters.
