Foreign Perceptions of Bhutan
Two Portuguese Jesuits, Father Caella and Cabral, are believed to be the first westerners to enter Bhutan. In 1627, they spent several months with the Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel, whom they described as the "King and at the same time the chief Lama." They had set out from the Province of Malabar, East India, to convert Bhutan and Tibet to Christianity. Despite less than cordial experiences on the way, once in Bhutan they found the Bhutanese a trustworthy and good natured people. Cacella wrote of the Shabdrung, "He received us with a demonstration of great benevolence, signifying this in the joy which he showed on seeing us." The 18th and 19th centuries saw the arrival of the British, who were moving north from their Indian stronghold. Several British missions were sent to Bhutan to try to acquire trading privileges, and in particular, a right of passage for goods between Tibet and India. Missions led by Bogle and Hamilton in 1774-75, by Hamilton in 1776 and 1777, and by Turner and Davis in 1783 were characterized by mutual understanding and good Bhutanese-English relations. In the 19th century, things began to turn sour, and successive missions by Bose in 1815, Pemberton in 1838 and especially by Eden in 1863-64 saw increased animosity between the two countries, culminating in the Duar war in 1864-65.

The kingdom of Bhutan is a tiny, remote and impoverished country nestling in the Himalayas between its powerful neighbours, India and China.
Almost completely cut off for centuries, it has tried to let in some aspects of the outside world while fiercely guarding its ancient traditions. OVERVIEW
FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA The Bhutanese name for Bhutan, Druk Yul, means "Land of the Thunder Dragon" and it only began to open up to outsiders in the 1970s. The hereditary monarch wielded absolute power until 1998, and Bhutan still has no formal constitution. Television was only allowed in 1999. Bhutan's ancient Buddhist culture and breathtaking scenery make it a natural tourist attraction. Tourism is restricted; visitors must travel as part of a pre-arranged package or guided tour. Backpackers and independent travellers are discouraged. The king has gone to great lengths to preserve the indigenous Buddhist culture of the majority Drukpa, who have a common culture with the Tibetans and other Himalayan peoples. National dress is compulsory - the knee-length wrap-around "gho" for men and the ankle-length dress known as the "kira" for women.

Bhutan's professional chefs temper their natural tendency to over spice dishes by preparing food more suitable to western taste ranging from Continental to Chinese and Bhutanese to Indian. Currency: Bhutanese currency is the ngultrum (Nu). The approximate exchange rate is Nu.40 for one US dollar. The ngultrum is on par with the Indian rupee (both the Nu and Indian Rupee can be used in Bhutan). US Dollars and dollar traveler's cheques can be exchanged at banks (hours 10:00 am to 1:00 pm Mon to Fri) and the larger hotels. Ngultrum or rupees will be what you will need for your purchases while in the Kingdom.
Bhutan's official language is Dzongkha . Given the geographic isolation of many of Bhutan's highland villages, it is not suprising that a number of different dialects have survived. Bhutan has never had a rigid class system. Social and educational opportunities are not affected by rank or by birth. Bhutanese women enjoy equal rights with men in every respect. Bhutanese men wear a gho, a long robe tied around the waist by a small belt called kera. The women's ankle length dress is called a kira, made from beautifully colored and finely woven fabrics with traditional patterns. Necklaces are fashioned from corals, pearls, turqoise, and the precious agate eye stones which the Bhutanese call '

A man from Sakten, eastern Bhutan Culture Bhutanese language and literature, arts and crafts, ceremonies and events, and basic social and cultural values draw their essence from religious teachings. The tradition of fine art is alive today, manifested, for example, in products like the legendary thangkas. The exquisite traditional painting is also visible on monasteries and houses, skillfully enhancing the architecture. Architecture is also a significant feature of the Bhutanese identity. The combination of engineering skill and aesthetic beauty is unparalleled in all structures, from the massive monastic fortresses to houses and bridges. Traditional shapes, colours and patterns on the walls, doors, windows, plave Bhutanese architecture in a class of its own. Music, dance, and handicrafts, both by the clergy and the lay population, play an important role in national, village, or domestic functions and festivals. Bhutan's textile tradition has, in recent years, gone international. The distinct technique, colour and style of indigenous Bhutanese weaving is being increasingly appreciated by textile specialists, collectors, and users. The national language of Bhutan is Dzongkha. The people also speak more than 18 dialects across the country. Today, English is taught in the schools and is used as the official working language, but the national leaders emphasize the development and use of Dzongkha.

Bhutan History and Culture
History Bhutan is known to the Bhutanese as "Druk Yul" or "Land of the Thunder Dragon". It is located at the south of Tibet and the north of north east of India as Assam and Sikkim. It is the only independent Buddhist Monarchy in the world. It remained isolated to the Western world until 1974, when the government decided to allow the first foreign visitors to enter the country. Buddhism was introduced in the 7th century. At this time there was no central government in the country, but as Buddhism matured within Bhutan, it became a unifying element for the country. Bhutan's early history is steeped in Buddhist tradition and mythology.

B hutan - A Kingdom in the Himalaya
Nestled in the Eastern Himalayas, sandwiched between Tibetan region of China in the north and India in the south, lies a mysterious and breathtakingly beautiful Himalayan Kingdom, about the size of Switzerland. It is often referred to the outside world as the last “Shangri La” on earth. The inhabitants themselves call it “Druk Yul”, meaning, the land of the peaceful dragon. The world knows it better as Bhutan.
Bhutan is one of the few countries in the world that managed to preserve its environment almost intact. With approximately 72% of the country still under forest cover, Bhutan is blessed with great richness of flora and fauna, a wealth of almost 600 bird species, including the globally threatened Black-Necked Crane. With crystal clear rivers and Majestic Himalayan mountains, the rich wild life includes Tiger, Snow Leopard, Golden Langur, Blue sheep, Takin, Himalayan Black Bear and Red Panda, to name a few.

The cultural heritage of the Shabdrung
Under the rule and leadership of the Shabdrung various elements of the material and spiritual culture were put together to one system. By that the Shabdrung started the development of an independent Bhutanese cultural identity, which was different from the other states of the Himalayas. At the same time it unified the diverse local cultures of the times before the Shabdrung. A lot of what Shabdrung Ngawang Namgyel had introduced and established, has shaped Bhutan's culture, even into the present. The monastery fortresses , founded by him, have determined the forms and shapes of architecture; they are still the seat of the »dual ruling system« ) of mundane and religious powers, as established by him. The endangered black-necked crane (photo: RSPN) With some 72% of the country still covered by virgin forest and having an ecosystem hosting 770 species of birds and over 50 species of rhododendron and an astonishing variety of orchids and other plants, Bhutan has the potential to become one of the world’s greatest eco-tourism destinations. Conscious of the value and fragility of this outstanding natural environment, the Royal Government of Bhutan has adopted a policy of low-volume, high-value tourism. This policy, promising high value and low impact for visitors to the country, has been notably successful in protecting the country’s spectacular cultural and natural heritage while promoting community participation in eco-tourism development and equal benefit-sharing among stakeholders. Established in 1987, the Royal Society for the Protection of Nature (RSPN) has worked with the World Wildlife Fund, the US MacArthur Foundation and the Bhutan Trust Fund for Environmental Conservation, implementing environmental education, awareness and conservation programmes throughout Bhutan. It enjoys the patronage of HRH the Crown Prince of Bhutan. The aim of the UNESCO / RSPN project is to develop an integrated conservation development programme in Bhutan’s Phobjikha Valley, a conservation area and home to the endangered Black-Necked Crane, as well as to other wetland species. Phobjikha has a population of 5,000 people, mostly farmers living in the Valley’s 37 villages, and it a prime site for the development of culturally and environmentally responsible cultural and eco-tourism.

2. Buddhist Bhutan Fights to Stem Nepalese Cultural Tide
Forwarded by: Sonam Dargyay, Tibet News Digest
By Christopher Thomas
April 2, The (London) Times BHUTAN, last of the Himalayan Buddhist
kingdoms, is fighting for survival. King Jigme Singye Wangchuck has introduced
extraordinary measures to save one of the world's most vulnerable and isolated
countries. It may be too late.
Television is banned, there are no political parties, almost all tourists
are kept out, and Dzongkha has been declared the sole official language.
Everything from the clothes to be worn in public to the appropriate style of
formal greetings has been precisely defined to preserve a culture little
changed in centuries. The threat to Bhutan's heritage comes from the flat, fertile south, where ethnic Nepalese are the majority. Nepal-based insurgents have destroyed hospitals, schools, bridges and electricity supplies in a battle waged ostensibly for democracy. The objective is overthrow of the king and absorption of Bhutan's indigenous Drukpa people into Nepalese culture.
