Directors, Dept Chairs, System Administration FROM:    University Risk Management SENDER:  Cindy Davis, Director DATE:    May 12, 2004 SUBJECT: Requirements for Serving Alcohol at University Events As spring and summer activities and events are planned for the campus, I would like to call your attention to the administrative policy governing the use of alcohol at UCB official functions and campus events. First, it is important to understand and acknowledge the University administration does not encourage the use of alcohol; and encourages University groups to promote and enjoy events without the use of alcohol.  However, if the decision is made to have alcohol beverages at a University event, certain legal and administrative requirements must be met to reduce liability exposures for the faculty, staff, and students. Each of us is personally responsible for complying with University policy regarding use of alcohol, liquor liability insurance requirements, and state rules and regulations regarding sales and service of alcohol. Please note the specific requirements below: All Official functions that include the serving of alcohol require the completion of an Official Function Authorization Form and prior approval by appropriate UCB signatories, including Risk Management. Please include the date and time of the event on the official function form; with a description of the event and who will attend; if it is open to the public; or if it is a closed event (by invitation only.)

BEVERAGES
the latest developments in soft drinks, bottled waters, RTD icedteas, sports drinks, fruit drinks and a variety of other non-alcohol beverages.
By Gerry Khermouch Consolidation has been the buzzword in the beverage industry, but the year has seen its share of new products, new segments and new initiatives mainly by smaller players trying to hang in there through product and marketing ingenuity and targeted distribution moves. Meanwhile, after lavishing much attention and tens of millions of dollars on unproven "new age" categories in recent years, the beverage behemoths seem to have refocused on their core competencies. The cola giants are launching major efforts to restore colas to what the companies view as their rightful share of the industry's growth, even as they launch a variety of new brands and new positionings in the flavored soft drink category dominated by the likes of Sprite, Mountain Dew and Squirt. Outside the cola conglomerates, Seagram's Tropicana unit is augmenting its orange juice dominance by focusing on convenient, single-serve packaging and new or restaged value-added orange juice blends, even as it experiments with limited tests of new smoothie-style products that might tap into a potentially burgeoning beverage segment. Generally, though, for the major players, the burnish is definitely off new age beverages, as iced tea growth tilts toward cold-filled entries like Lipton Brisk (via Pepsi-Cola) and Cool from Nestea (via Coca-Cola). Fruit drinks have also started moving in that direction, most noticeably with the restaging of Coca-Cola's Fruitopia as a cold-filled entry produced, packaged and merchandised just like a soft drink.

$B!!!!!!(B $B%-%j%s%S! l$K Summer is when beer tastes really good, but it is also a tough time for auto drivers who have to wait until they get home to quench their thirst. The term "non-alcohol beer" is heard quite often, but is beer with no alcohol content be considered as a beer?
So we asked an attendant at the Hokuriku Kirin Brewery this question, and she wrote a reply back in a letter. Here is an excerpt:
    (Non-Alcohol Beer)=a Cold, Beer-Flavoured Beverage
This beer was developed to reduce the increasing number of alcohol poisoning, young people drinking alcohol and driving under the infuence of alcohol. Today, there is a demand for non-alcoholic beverages which captures the smell, the taste and the feeling of an alcohol drink.
There are two ways in which non-alcohol beers are made. One is to restrict the time under fermentation and the other is to take the alcohol out from a regular beer. Based on similar ideas, developments are underway for wines and sakes with alcohol taken out from them.
Kirin's non-alcohol beer is named "Backler", and it has 0.5% alcohol content and is low-calorie. People can try this beverage at the Spring Field Restaurant which is located within the Hokuriku Kirin Brewery.
