PREAMBLE:
The Pan American Sanitary Bureau (PASB) is the executive arm of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO); it simultaneously serves as the Regional Office for the Americas of the World Health Organization.
ORIGIN:
In 1949, the Pan American Sanitary Organization and the World Health Organization agreed that the Pan American Sanitary Bureau would serve as the Regional Office of the World Health Organization for the Americas. In 1950, the Pan American Sanitary Organization was recognized as a fully autonomous and specialized inter-American organization. Thus, the Organization became a component of both the United Nations and the inter-American systems. The XV Pan American Sanitary Conference (San Juan, Puerto Rico, 1958) changed the name of the Pan American Sanitary Organization to the Pan American Health Organization. The name of the Pan American Sanitary Bureau remained unchanged.
FUNDAMENTAL PURPOSES:
The fundamental purposes of the Pan American Health Organization are to promote and coordinate the efforts of the countries of the Region of the Americas to combat disease, lengthen life, and promote the physical and mental health of their people.

Hotel cooking is usually international with some Bermudian specialities such as Bermuda lobster (in season September to mid-April), mussel pie, conch stew, fish chowder laced with sherry, peppers, rum and shark. Other seafoods include rockfish, red snapper and yellowtail. Peculiar to Bermuda is the Bermuda onion; other fine home-grown products include pawpaw and strawberries in January and February, and a variety of local citrus fruit. Traditional Sunday breakfast is codfish and bananas while desserts include sweet potato pudding, bay grape jelly and a syllabub of guava jelly, cream and sherry. There is a vast variety of restaurants, cafes, bars and taverns to suit all pockets. Service will vary although generally table service can be expected. Local drinks and cocktails have Caribbean rum as a base, and have colourful names such as Dark and Stormy and the famous Rum Swizzle . British, European and US beer is available. It is normal in bars to pay for each drink and to tip the barman. In restaurants, drinks are added to the bill.

http://www.caricom.org/archives/caricom-history.htm
THE HISTORY OF CARICOM T he establishment of the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) was the result of a 15-year effort to fulfil the hope of regional integration which was born with the establishment of the British West Indies Federation in 1958. It was a Federal Government drawn from 10 member islands. Although a plan for a Customs Union was drawn up, emphasis was not placed on economic aspects of Federation during the four years of its existence. Economically the Region remained as it had been for centuries and not even Free Trade was introduced between the Member Countries during this period. The West Indies Federation came to an end in 1962 but its end, in many ways must be regarded as the real beginning of what is now the Caribbean Community. T he end of the Federation meant the beginning of more serious efforts on the part of the political leaders in the Caribbean to strengthen the ties between the islands and mainland by providing for the continuance and strengthening of the areas of cooperation that existed during the Federation. To this end in mid-1962 a Common Services Conference was called to take decisions on these services, the major ones among them being the University of the West Indies (UWI), founded in 1948 and the Regional Shipping Services set up during the Federation to control the operation of the two ships donated in 1962 by the government of Canada - the Federal Palm and the Federal Maple. T he Caribbean Meteorological Service was established one year after, in 1963 and along with the UWI and the Regional Shipping Service, represented the heart of Caribbean cooperation directly after the end of the Federation.

The Deadliest, Costliest, and Most Intense United States Hurricanes from 1900 to 2000

Digging into Hurricanes
By Michael Carlowicz
From Woods Hole Currents, Fall 2002 21 SEPTEMBER 1938 category 3 M ost hurricane researchers look at the atmosphere to study their subjects. Some look in the history archives. Jeff Donnelly looks in the mud. A sediment core allows Donnelly to chronicle the landfall of historic hurricanes, such as the 1635, 1938, and 1954 storms that struck New England.(Photo courtesy of Jeff Donnelly) Webb and Donnelly were funded by RPI to help prove that you could find hurricanes in the coastal geologic record. The fieldwork began at Succotash Marsh (near Kingston, RI) because it sits behind a barrier beach that protects it from constant changes along the surf line. Sifting through the sediments, Donnelly found layers of sand mixed between peat. That sand, he surmised, must have been washed into the marsh by great storms. Essentially, a hurricane or Nor'easter would have had to wash sand from the shoreline all the way into the back bay. And it would have to be a pretty potent storm to move sand that far, over dunes and other coastal formations. (Illustration by Jayne Doucette) 3 SEPTEMBER 1821 category 3 hurricane. It was the only time in recorded history that New York took a direct hit from an intense hurricane.

Phaeophyta : Life History and Ecology
Though there are a few rare freshwater species, the brown algae dwell almost exclusively in marine (or coastal) environments. Members of the group dominate many benthic marine biotas, sometimes reaching from the ocean floor to its surface. In general, they are not free-floating organisms, but are attached to rock, coral, or other firm surfaces. The group is found primarily in colder waters of the northern hemisphere, with the largest forms occurring in cooler waters, rather than in the tropics. Many familiar species, such as rockweed, are intertidal , and are exposed to the air at low tide.
Kelp forests
Pictured above is a kelp bed located near Monterey, California. We will have more on these important communities at a later time.
The Sargasso Sea
The Sargasso Sea is a free-floating ( pelagic ) kelp-dominated ecosystem in the western North Atlantic. It is bounded by the Gulf Stream, the Canaries Current, and other currents which together produce an ever circulating boundary. The local pattern of distribution appears to also be affected by both wind and thermal fronts, and more broadly may be affected by the action of storms. Attempts to quantify the amount and distribution of Sargassum in the Atlantic have met with many difficulties, including changes with seasonality and regional patchiness. Two species constitute the majority of the algae here, primarily
