Air Quality Effects of Atmospheric Deposition on Vegetation and Springs The recent decrease in the air quality has raised many concerns. Atmospheric deposition may be altering aquatic ecosystems at desert springs and tinajas, particularly in areas not dominated by limestone. Lichens and other vegetation may also be affected. While the park monitors air quality, very little research has been done on the effect of air deposition on water sources and vegetation. Archeological research Rock art: Several prehistoric sites containing pictographs and petroglyphs. The documentation of rock art on these sites is poor or non-existent and current conditions are unknown. Some are receiving higher unsupervised visitation and rock art panels have been vandalized. Active interpretation of the sites is not done due to lack of knowledge about the specific qualities of each site. Thorough descriptive documentation is needed to enable park management to plan preservation of the sites. Botany Follow up on Already Established Vegetation Monitoring Projects Many vegetation monitoring plots have been established in the park over the past 50 years and valuable information about vegetation change and recovery from grazing could be gained by revisiting these plots. Most of these plots also need to be mapped using GPS technology.

(University of the West of England, Faculty of the Built Environment, Occasional Paper no. 12, 2002) ISBN 1 86043 294 8 Peter Fleming D.M.Palliser (ed) The Cambridge Urban History of Britain I The Cambridge Urban History totals three volumes each of around 900 pages so this reviewer looks for understanding of his decision only to tackle one volume. Nevertheless, it is useful to begin with that fact which can be set against the single volume of Dyos's The Study of Urban History of 1968 (pub Arnold) as a measure of the development of the topic. We have now reached a stage when an authoritative assessment of the subject can be made. As regards the Middle Ages, they featured only intermittently in Dyos's work which had a considerable focus on methods but which was weighted also towards the nineteenth century city. This tied in with the contributors. Besides historians there were three geographers, six sociologists, two from schools of architecture and one from fine arts. The biggest single source for the thirty-one historians was economic history. In contrast, the contributors to the present work are twenty-one historians, three archaeologists, one geographer and one architect. Moreover, many of the historians have a background of working with archaeologists. (To complete the comparison with Dyos it is worth mentioning that Volumes II and III involved a further eight geographers and one each from archaeology, the fine arts and cultural studies.)

The legacies of Atlantic tropical cyclones span many cultures and thousands of years. Early evidence of these storms predates extant weather records. Geologists believe that layers of sediment at the bottom of a lake in Alabama were brought there from the nearby Gulf of Mexico by storm surges associated with intense hurricanes that occurred as much as 3,000 years ago (Liu and Fearn 1993). Similarly, sediment cores from the Florida west coast indicate exceptional freshwater floods during strong
