Email: info@bic.bm Our fish hook shaped island, or rather collection of islands, is often confused with our Caribbean neighbors who are actually over a 1000 miles to the South. Bermuda is actually the southern edge of the top of a submerged mountain that was once an active volcano millions of years ago. Located approximately 600 miles of the coast of cape Hatteras, visitors are surprised to discover that a single short plane flight from most of the East Coast gateway cities is all that is required to arrive in sunny Bermuda. There are also direct flights from Canada and Europe. The ring of coral reefs surrounding the principal islands has the distinction of being the northernmost living coral reef formations in the northern hemisphere. It was this deadly ring of reefs that gave Bermuda a reputation as a graveyard of ships, and there was great truth to this... over 300 known shipwrecks are scattered over the coral reefs that surround us. Divers from all over the world enjoy exploring these wrecks that are often situated in less than 30 feet of water. The colorful corals and abundant marine life are an added incentive to divers, snorkellers and glass bottom boat cruisers.

Boat groundings have destroyed thousands of square meters of coral reef in Bermuda. There are only two navigable approaches to the islands and several oil tankers have gone aground on the reef. An investment in improved navigational markers would be helpful in preventing such accidents.

The Bermuda Triangle covers approximately 500,000 square miles of the Atlantic Ocean. The official dimensions (if you can call them that) claim the triangle is that area between Bermuda; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Miami, Florida. However when you start plotting ocean disasters that are attributed to the Triangle its boundaries shift all over the North Atlantic and sometimes into the Eastern Pacific and Gulf of Mexico. I wanted to get off this extra log before leaving tomorrow morning. The weather has settled down and the heavy weather predicted did not really materialize. Oh well, we should have a good crossing. We plan to go the northern route (ie. up to 40 north then across) as the winds are supposed to be better at this time with a marginally better chance, though, of gales and icebergs. We could actually leave today, but there is a "potluck supper" planned for tonight across on Hen Island. So we will stay for it. We plan to clear customs tonight, and when we get back from the potluck we will bring the dinghy on board, lash everything down, and be prepared for sea so we can leave first thing in the morning. There will be several boats leaving around the same time, though some are leaving today.
Yesterday we went up to the " Bermuda Harbour Radio " station high up on a hill overlooking St. George's. It is a modern communications and rescue centre facility built on old Fort George, complete with two large 11 inch Rifled Muzzle Loader cannon, outside a 50-foot deep dry, rectangular moat. The station was atop the "keep" overlooking St George's, with only a narrow walkway crossing the moat for access. We enjoyed the visit. The station had sophisticated radars, radios, satellite communications and other modern technology. The radars could track vessels approaching Bermuda and when noted would automatically calculate range, bearing, course, speed, and latitude and longitude. Any radio transmissions could also be triangulated from two other receivers and the latitude and longitude immediately determined as well.

Introduction
This unit was developed at San Diego State University in EDTEC 596 , Interdisciplinary Teaching with Technology, Bernie Dodge , Instructor. Radio tower operators knew something was terribly wrong when Flight 19, pilot Lt.C.C. Taylor frantically radioed on a clear day, "We seem to be lost..." The Bermuda Triangle has served as a source of mystery, intrigue, and debate since Christopher Columbus passed through the area in the late 15th century. This unit uncovers the history and mystery surrounding the Bermuda Triangle. You and your students are about to embark on your own journey through this area known as the "Devil's Triangle." Upon completion of your journey, your class should have developed their own ideas and will have the opportunity to debate the truth about these mysterious waters.
Content Areas and Grades
This interdisciplinary unit covers the contents: math, science, language arts, and social science. The material is suitable for seventh and eighth grade levels. The unit touches upon many learning styles with particular emphasis on hands-on discovery.
Curriculum Standards
Students will uncover the history and myths surrounding the legendary Bermuda Triangle. Students will develop their writing skills based on the information they obtain from the unit.
