Bermuda, like every island or country in the Western Hemisphere was first inhabited by the Indians. The history of them has been greatly missing and only mentions the hostile relations between them and the Virginia Company. Geologists have concluded that Bermuda came into existence after a volcanic eruption over one hundred million years ago. Even though the soil is of volcanic formation, yet it is surrounded by coral reefs that protect it from natural erosion. There is a steep drop off beyond the coral reefs as the water is about three miles deep. The water within the coral reefs area is fairly calm, dreamily blue-green and transparent, and the beaches have a lovely pink cast. The Bermudan culture is a combination of British and African heritages. The British have had their greatest cultural influences in institutions such as the form of government, educational system and the island's legal framework. The English culture is highly prevalent in the forms of clothes, uniforms worn by judges and police people. The international game of cricket is widely played on the island. The majority of churchgoers are of the Anglican religion. The African influence is more subtle but can be found in the island music and dance, especially in music of African origin, which comes from the West Indies, music such as calypso, reggae and also in the rhythm of Gombey dancers.

THE E Government Portal will see a major cultural change in the civil service says Nigel Hickson E Commerce Consultant to the Ministry of Tourism, Telecommunications and E Commerce.
Hickson was the keynote speaker addressing the Information Systems Audit and Control Association monthly meeting at the Bank of Butterfield headquarters and discussed why the government is keen to bring forward the E Governmental Portal.
“The days of offshore E business jurisdictions just concentrating on having great server farms full of pornography and gambling sites has ended. The successful offshore jurisdiction of the future is one that is going to based on international business and E business is going to be part of that overall development but it’s not going to be the main element. It is an enabler for all parts of the economy,” Hickson said.
The government’s strategy for E business is not just filling hosting facilities but about making International businesses feeling good to be here, the development of E business locally, education and increasing access to government department and services Hickson said.

WITH A cell phone glued to her ear, Deirdre — as she announced herself to a succession of people she was calling — sat in the crowded airport, conversing, loudly, about her day-care troubles, her family and the removal of her mother’s right ovary.
For those sitting near her, there was no way to ignore this modern-day scourge: the public cell-phone yapper who reveals private matters to an audience of unwilling listeners.
When someone nearby finally asked her to take her next private conversation elsewhere, it was Deirdre who was offended: “That’s the rudest thing I’ve ever heard.’’
The matter of who is being rude as cell-phone users yak away in public has opened a national discourse over cell-phone etiquette — or lack thereof. In a continuing Web poll, restaurant reviewer Zagat Survey L.L.C. has received passionate responses on the issue of diners’ cell-phone use.
“I would like to start smoking again so I could blow smoke at people talking on cell phones,’’ one respondent wrote.

A t first glance it might appear the art world here is so small that the entire picture could be set in a modest frame. But several Bermudian artists have established reputations abroad, and their push for excellence and recognition serves as an inspiration to our dancers and musicians. Almost quietly, many are carving local niches as a springboard for jumping "the pond" local vernacular for the surrounding ocean. The rivalry within the Bermuda art community is strong, creating both an upside and downside. Competition is keen, but, says one dance school head, the student community is often deprived of the kind of exchange that allows them to learn from each other. Art galleries and studios are generally owned and run by artists who use them to promote their own works. Often the gallery or studio is a room or two in the artist's home. Three artists who have carved solid reputations with their art are Bruce Stuart, president of the Bermuda Society of Arts; Elizabeth Mulderig whose "onion" paintings of famous Bermudians are on exhibit at the Masterworks Gallery in Somerset; and Graham Foster whose interpretation of the ubiquitous Bermudian home is refreshingly unique. Each year most arts organizations have a major exhibition or performance, allowing established and new talent a showcase opportunity.

Back to Arts and Culture
Bermuda's Cedar Carvers
For centuries, from the very beginning of Bermuda's colonization, craftsmen have been shaping juniperus bermudiana (the Bermuda cedar) to use as furniture. Even now there are exquisite tables and chairs, staircases and banisters, doors and moldings that can be traced back to the 19th century, and in some instances, the 1700s. What haven't come down through the centuries though, are artistic carvings, and it almost begs the question as to why not. Certainly the skill of the artisans could not have been directed only toward the functional. Surely there must have been a man or woman who took this most difficult of woods to work with and brought some artistic spirit to life. But there is nothing today to show that any such pieces have survived. However, as we approach the end of the century, cedar carvers have and are continuing to leave a mark on Bermuda's cultural pages. Interpretations of subject matter range from realism to abstraction. Some of the carvings are architectonic in nature and are not dissimilar to some African carvings. This is actually not too unusual. In the world of sculpture, wood is principally associated with African art and certain sculptures of the medieval period. In this century Henry Moore, who was fascinated with Mexican and African art, manipulated the special characteristics, its vertical graining and organic nature. Similarly, a handful of local carvers have learned to manipulate the tricky and eccentric grain of the Bermuda cedar, creating splendid works of art. Leading the world of the cedar carver is Chesley Trott, who has a studio at the Dockyard. His works are frequently imitated by young carvers.

Continuing the work of Scottish Opera for All (SOFA), the oldest established education and outreach unit of any opera house in Europe, the company will be running a series of expressive arts programmes for primary/middle and secondary pupils, as well as professional career development workshops for student teachers. Scottish Opera's most travelled ambassador, SOFA has visited Barbados, Singapore, Ireland, Finland and Portugal and currently leads a coalition of opera house educators, national arts organisations and local government education departments from five European countries, developing the relationship between the arts and education.

Another string to Scottish Opera's bow, and one that's also represented in Bermuda is Essential Scottish Opera. Showcasing the talents of four of Scottish Opera's young stars, the programme of excerpts will feature a mix of much-loved arias, duets and ensembles.
From Turandot to tourism
Built around this concert of opera highlights and Gala Night in Bermuda will be a specially packaged 'Weekend of Opera' which it's hoped will attract many visitors to the island. Tourism is the mainstay of the Bermudian economy, so any addition to the already impressive range of activities and attractions on offer is cause for applause.

Obviously Bermuda has no culture since you website is blank under that
category. May I suggest that all of you Bermudians need to first get
educated so you can
1) get a decent job so you can afford to attend cultural events and
2) you can understand what you are attending Then you need to grow out of the "Good Morning" syndrome. Making someone say "Good Morning" before you will even pay attention to them shows a complete lack of culture. Words are meaningless unless the actions match them. There I've said my piece, Signed I Emphedop, 4/4/01 On the subject of education, I agree. Bermuda should not be complaining about missing the boat when it comes to high-paying jobs until we invest in the education that will qualify ourselves to take them. Cornholio, 2/7/01
