Horizons children's loss program
six-week program of education and support that brings help to grieving children at Orange, Osceola and Seminole County schools. With guidance from Horizons trained facilitators, children discover ways to heal after experiencing a loss. Horizons provides a safe, supportive environment where children can explore their feelings and meet peers experiencing the same situation. This normalizes their feelings and alleviates any sense of isolation and frustration. Horizons relies heavily on the use of creative arts such as drama, puppetry, music, art and creative writing. Researchers have documented that these expressive arts provide access to the recognition of repressed grief. If a child is old enough to love, they are old enough to grieve. Camp Good Grief for Children and Teens
Camp Good Grief supports children and teens during the summer, when they are no longer supported by grief programs held in schools during the school year. Qualified professionals and carefully screened and trained volunteers of Hospice of the Comforter will staff this program. All children must pre-enroll.

Little Rock, AR 72211 Dear Ms. Frueauff: Helping all early adolescents to flourish is the overarching goal of Interfaith Neighbors. Making certain that our most vulnerable youngsters flourish constitutes our daily challenge and our distinctive competence. We are pleased to provide you with information about the Children's Bereavement Project, Interfaith Neighbors' school-based counseling and intervention project for youngsters who have lost a loved one. Interfaith seeks a grant of $30,000 to provide direct services to 120 vulnerable fifth through ninth graders in East Harlem and Yorkville. For too many of our young people, grief over the death of a parent or other family member lies at the core of a range of concerns, from poor academic performance to behavior problems and depression. Young people who have experienced a profound loss are often depressed and angry, distracted in school and alienated from their peer group because they feel do different. Interfaith's group bereavement services help children to explore and cope with their losses. The Bereavement Project is central to Interfaith's youth development mission. By addressing grief over family losses, we help young people to thrive in their school and social settings. Interfaith's Board of Directors provided seed money to launch this project two years ago. A multi-year grant from the Soros Foundation's Project on Death in America is providing partial support for operations and research. We seek additional funding to double the number of young people served from 60 to 120 and to replicate our bereavement counseling model in three new schools.

50 Ways to Love Your Leaver by Dwight Webb. This book represents the author's own personal journey following the breakup of his own marriage. His thoughts are a kind of a "road map" of the grieving process for others traveling the same path. He helps you discover your own personal way of grieving, learn to express yourself in healthy, productive ways, and avoid the blame and bitterness that can seriously affect your physical, social, psychological, spiritual and sexual life.
From the Rebuilding Series at Impact Publishers (Atascadero, CA 800-246-7228) in 2000, this 155-page book sells for $14.95 (trade). A Decembered Grief: Living with Loss while Others are Celebrating by Harold Ivan Smith. This is a book is a collection of two- page devotional thoughts directed at those who have lost loved ones during the holiday season. Smith says this is done "through moments, through songs, through scents, through people, through memories, through hopes."
Some of the 55 devotional titles include the following: Anticipate the Holidays, Ask Your Church for Help, Carolize Your Season, Celebrate Sensitively, Create New Traditions, Cry If You Want To, Guard Your Heart, Invite God's Help, Network with Other Grievers, Say Your Loved One's Name, Unplug the Christmas Mania, and How to Pray This Holiday Season.

Helping Children Cope with Loss, Death and Grief:
Response to a National Tragedy
Expressions of Grief
Talking to children about death must be geared to their developmental level and their capacity to understand the related facts of the situation. Children will be aware of the reactions of significant adults as they interpret and react to information about death and tragedy. The range of reactions that children display in response to the death of significant others may include:
  • Emotional shock and at times an apparent lack of feelings, which serve to help the child detach from the pain of the moment; Regressive (immature) behaviors Explosive emotions and acting out behavior Asking the same questions over and over , not because they do not understand the facts, but rather because the information is so hard to believe or accept. Repeated questions can help listeners determine if the child is responding to misinformation or the real trauma of the event.
Helping Children Cope
The following tips will help teachers and parents support children who have experienced the loss of parents or loved ones. Some of these recommendations come from Dr. Alan Wolfelt, Director of the Center for Loss and Life Transition in Fort Collins, Colorado.

A life-long resident of Rockville Centre, New York, Elaine Stillwell is a graduate of Manhattanville College, Purchase, NY, with a B.A. in English Literature, and holds masters degrees, M.A. and M.S. in Counseling and Education from the University of Notre Dame, South Bend, IN and Hofstra University, Hempstead, NY. She is a wife, mother of three children, educator, author, and lecturer. Her teaching career guiding elementary children through the wonders of learning spanned thirty-five years and now she is teaching a new audience, bereaved families. Following the deaths of her two oldest children, 21-year-old Denis and 19-year-old Peggy in the same car accident in 1986, she learned first hand about the roller-coaster ride of grief and the emotional potholes to be avoided while coping and surviving. Fifteen months after the loss of her children, Elaine and her husband, Joe, founded the Rockville Centre Chapter of The Compassionate Friends, a national self-help organization for bereaved parents and siblings. As Chapter Leader, Elaine leads the discussion each month, simply sharing what she has read and what she has learned, as she struggled to reweave her family tapestry and to lead a meaningful life.
