Grief and Bereavement Support
Hartford Hospital is committed to providing compassionate care to families and friends who grieve the loss of a loved one. Grief is a normal emotional response following a loss. The more attached we are to someone, the greater our grief response will be. When we become separated from someone we love, our grief can be very powerful and cause a number of physical, emotional and spiritual symptoms. It is important to remember that each of us grieve differently and experience our own multiple reactions and challenges following a death. The Process of Grieving
When a loved one dies, feelings of shock, denial, sadness, anger and depression usually follow. Often times these feelings are accompanied by physical symptoms like a lack of energy, knotted stomach, loss of appetite and feeling disoriented. Recognizing that these symptoms are normal responses to the death of someone close to you is the first step in the process of grieving.

A Biocybernaut Neurofeedback Case History
Case Study 1: Depression and Bereavement in an Elderly Widow
When this woman came to us for treatment, she was 73 years old. Her husband had died the year before, and she found herself filled with grief and completely lost, since she had been a full time housewife and mother, She was mourning the loss of her husband and the loss of companionship. She had become addicted to Valium, and had just completed a drug detoxification program. However, she was still diagnosed as clinically depressed, with extreme loneliness and isolation. She did quite well in learning to control her brain waves. By the time she had completed ten of her twenty sessions, her depression had left her. She was no longer clinically depressed, and she began to see a new direction for herself. She began reporting that each day, when she had her highest alpha scores, that she was envisioning herself as a leader of people. This was a role which had never surfaced before in her 73 years. When she finished her training, she became head of the Displaced Homemakers, and began helping other widowed and divorced women to overcome their grief and begin to grow again. She began teaching courses on stress reduction at a local college, using course material she designed herself. At her 6 month follow-up, she said that the Brain Wave Energy training had played a major role in her metamorphosis. In her words: "I now feel that any place I go, I have faith and I can express ME. I have so much confidence in where I'm at, and that makes an impact on other people's lives. I have so much solid ground now. I feel centered and stable, more than ever before in my life. I get so much validation now. Through this brain wave training I am able to put myself out more for others."

Person centered counselling; considerations and approaches for the grieving client. How and why bereavement counseling works.

BEREAVEMENT COUNSELLING
Statistically there appears to be a growing demand for bereavement counselling, and officially admittedly very poor training in it.
Introduction
Mourning, grieving, bereavement.. words synonymous to the lay person...
Loss of someone dear.. so painful, that it has found its way to lay dream interpretations as symbolising predicted sorrow.
"If we go to the root of it," has said Dag Hammerskjold, "it is our concept of death that decides our answers to all the questions which life poses." Jung agrees that "(...) when a human life comes to an end before our eyes.. the question of the meaning and worth of life never becomes more urgent..."
"...or agonising..." adds Jung ~and agree the composer and the poet and the story-teller, as do the scientist and the monk -for Laing only hints at the effect: "You'll cry, when I die; you'll yawn, when I'm gone; you'll be bored, unadored."
Considerations
When one realises uncontrollable behaviour, be it identifiable such as moodiness or as 'something wrong' affecting adversely personally and/or sociably, one may need counselling help, and in cases requiring medical attention also so ~"even in a simple organism such as a sea-snail, learning changes the structure of the cells within the nervous system" says Stewart Agras, director of behavioural medicine at Stanford university -within the brain cell learning and biological processes are joined; biology influences behaviour, but behaviour affects biology.

Journey Thru Grief About Me Our Story Early Days First Weeks ... Contact Me Welcome to Journey Thru Grief. Journey Thru Grief is a personal account of what I have learned thru my experiences of grieving the lost of loved ones. I hope to be able to share how I am surviving widowhood and the personal strengths I have found within me.
On the About Me page, the "doorway" to my site, I'll introduce myself and talk about the reasons for wanting to share my experiences. If my site gives even one person hope and inspiration to see the light and love, then my efforts in developing and sharing this site was worth it.
Please sign my guestbook with any comments or reactions you have to my site. You can also contact me privately. I love to get mail! Jerry and I were married in a small ceremony in a small chapel. So here goes... Story Fragment My wife, Jacky, had a phone call from the mother-in-law of her friend Paul to say he had died last person for over 10 years, busy lives, we often talked of popping in. He would be aged about 40. The funeral is next Wednesday, unfortunately the same day my wife has her GCSE exam in Hilda Last evening my mother phoned to say Auntie Hilda died, it was expected as she must nearly if there was some other family dynamic unknown to us. I started to think how I pictured Auntie. How to say goodbye! I conceived of a web page where I would do just this, and offer others ( you the reader ) the opportunity to do the same. Dying, Death and Bereavement
Thanatology
Thanatology is the field that studies dying, death, and bereavement.

Thanatology is the study of dying and bereavement. In our society, there seems to be a taboo when talking about or dealing with death. Thus, thanatology is a relatively new field. Many people considered studying dying people very cold and heartless, but many more people know and understand everyone must die for the world to continue. In the 1950s and 60s, social scientists and psychologists began to explore the dying process. Programs were developed to provide counseling and therapy for dying individuals and their family members. The goal was to help them to better understand and cope with what was happening. Generally, counseling for dying patients and the family is based on a model that goes through a series of stages or phases. One of the first theories to address dying was Elizabeth Kubler-Ross' Stages of Dying . Since her early work, there have been a number of persons who have explored the processes of dying, grief, bereavement, and mourning. Bereavement, Grief, and Mourning
