82. Coping With The 5 Stages Of Grief And Bereavement
How to cope with grief and bereavement. What the 5 stages of grief and bereavment are. Coping with loss.
http://www.york-united-kingdom.co.uk/funerals/grief/
What is grief?
When grieving due to a loss or bereavement there are considered to be 5 stages
In this document I am simply outlining what my experience of grieving for a loved one has meant to me. Grieving is a very personal experience for everyone. No one human can or should tell you how to grieve. That is not the intent here. I hope this will help you identify what you are feeling. Also it is to let you know you are not alone with how you are feeling. I found it very helpful to have caring people around me to help me. At some time in life we all feel loss and must find a way to cope with it.
If you have grieved for someone and wish to add your experiences here so as to help others understand, please do not hesitate to Email us.
1) DENIAL
In the denial stage we refuse to believe what has happened. We try in our mind to tell ourselves that life is as it was before our loss. We can even make believe to an extent by re enacting rituals that we used to go through with our loved one. Making an extra cup of tea for our loved one who is no longer there, rushing back to tell someone that you have met an old friend. Flashing back to times and conversations in the past as though they are here with us now. Introducing someone accidentally by your loved ones name to someone else. They can all be part of this stage.
2) ANGER
We get angry. The anger can manifest itself in many ways. We can blame others for our loss. We can become easily agitated having emotional outbursts. We can even become angry with ourselves. Care must be taken here not to turn this anger inwards. Release of this anger is a far better way to cope with grief in my experience.

INTRODUCTION
This site is dedicated to all my fellow traveller's, both past and present, along the road of grief and bereavement. Grief is an equal-opportunity affliction. No one is immune from its caress. I've included "loss" as well because there are griefs associated with other things besides death. These losses and griefs include trauma and stress as well as the changes in our lives such as puberty, graduation, marriage, new job, lost job, new baby, moving, divorce and so on. It is my hope to provide a place where the issues of grief, grieving, transition, recovery and healing are addressed. Resources for ministers, police, EMS personnel, doctors, nurses, counsellors, and other professionals are provided.

This is a term that describes all the feelings thoughts and behaviour that someone goes through after bereavement.
What is bereavement?
This is a term that can be used to describe any event that includes loss, so this could mean losing your job or the death of someone you know. In this article it refers to the death of someone.
Debate still continues as to what normal grief consists of and whether it is distinct from depression. It is very common for people to have symptoms that are often used to diagnose depression after bereavement. It is less common for people to experience a depressive illness and require treatment for this.

Bereavement and Grief
What is bereavement and what is grief?

Bereavement is defined as a state of sadness or loneliness. Grief is the collection of feelings and behaviors associated with the loss of a person. The loss is commonly caused by death of a friend or family member. However, the loss can also be caused by such events as someone moving away or by a divorce.
What feelings and behaviors are associated with bereavement and grief?
Some feelings associated with bereavement and grief are numbness, loneliness, sadness, guilt, shock, anxiety, depression, anger, and agitation.
Some behaviors associated with bereavement and grief are crying, insomnia, restlessness, and withdrawal.
What are some of the characteristics associated with grief?
It is extremely common for the person who is grieving to be critical of himself/herself for either doing something to or not doing something for the person who has died or left. It is also common for the grieving person to think that he/she should have died instead of the loved one. It is not unusual for the grieving person to be angry toward others, especially other family members or God. During the grief process many people are surprised to feel the strongest feelings they have ever felt in their lives. Having a depressed mood during grief is quite normal. Insomnia, crying spells and social withdrawal are common. However, a sense of worthlessness, severe guilt, or thoughts of suicide can signal a problem with the grief process. An evaluation and treatment by a professional can often help the person deal with both normal and abnormal feelings of grief.

Although the walk through the valley of the shadow of death is the toughest part of life for the human spirit to endure, most of us move beyond the shadows and once again enjoy the sunlight.
