Many eldercare resources exist to provide care for the total person. Please note the following resources for family bereavement in particular:
Give Sorrow Words
By Thomas S. Crider. This book follows a father's healing process following the sudden death of his only child. His daughter, a senior in college, was killed in a fire that engulfed her room. This book is of particular value because it realistically shows that grief processes can be long and painful. The shock of an unexpected, senseless death is particularly hard to take.
How To Survive The Loss Of A Parent
By Lois F. Akner and Catherine Whitney. This book is intended for adult readers who are seeking support following the death of a parent. Akner uses stories from participants in her popular workshops to illustrate the range of reactions people may have when a parent dies.

We found that 46 (19%)of the contacts occurred within 24 hours or less. Interestingly, 35 (76%) of the 46 contacts occurred between blood relatives. Only 5 (14%) occurred between significant others.
A BIG THANKS goes out to those who submitted their experiences on the website so that we can gain important insights into the ADC phenomena!

Up Glossary Feedback ... Bibliography
In 1969 Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, published "On Death and Dying" and pointed to our lack of knowledge about, and by extension, our inability to care for, the dying. Her work in describing five stages patients go through has almost entered the 'folklore' of thanatological literature. Medical students used the acronym DABDA when studying for exams: D ENIAL AND ISOLATION - "NO, NOT ME, IT CANNOT BE TRUE." A NGER - "WHY ME.". B ARGAINING - "YES ME ... BUT" D EPRESSION - "YES ME." A CCEPTANCE - "IT'S OKAY." The 'Stage Theory' and Kubler-Ross have been the subject of often cynical questioning in recent years. Difficulties with the research method have not been addressed in over 25 years. Nor is there any verification of the existence of the Five Stages or that if they exist, people progress through them in any orderly fashion.
The supposed universality of the stages sometimes results in patients being herded along to 'the next stage' by family, support and medical personnel. In other words, the 'description' has become the 'prescription'. The theory denies the individuality of human beings and other needs of the dying such as having some control in their own treatment and destiny, the role of culture, religion, personality, family dynamics and so on.
However, as Kastenbaum (1998) points out:

Welcome . . . Dear Friends,
Welcome to our internet site. I am the co-ordinator of "Women and Grief". With the help of volunteers who themselves have been through a Bereavement of some kind we fill a much needed gap in the bereavement cycle.
After the death of a loved one we can feel alone and isolated. We know the sense of utter Isolation , the feeling that no-one understands just what you are going through at the time of a bereavement and the months that follow.Grief is part of the process necessary to help us come to terms with that loss. Friends and family are a great support at this time and they care about us, but, unless they have been through the same experience it is difficult for them to really understand the depth of our pain and grief.
If you would like to talk with someone who has had a similar experience to yourself contact us. Our service is free . We are women supporting women through what can be a very lonely and difficult time.
We are here to help

At some time in every person's lifetime, he or she will experience the grief of loss. People of all ages can feel the emotions of grief. Sadness, anger, frustration, fear, guilt, anxiety, a sense of injustice, remorse, despair, relief, longing, rage, apprehension and so many others make up the feelings of grief. Even babies can show us that they feel the emotions of the adults around them. It is said that if a child is old enough to love, they are old enough to grieve.
