Main article: History of Benin The mediaeval African kingdom of Dahomey originated in Benin. By the 15th century , the kingdom, ruled by an oba , stretched beyond the borders of present-day Benin, covered a large part of West-Africa. The kingdom was prosperous and established slave trading relations with the Europeans (mostly Portuguese and Dutch ) who first arrived in the late 15th century.

History of the membership The continent's position as a crossroads between the Americas, Europe and Asia also lays it open to transnational crimes such as traffic in weapons, illicit drug trafficking, illegal immigration, traffic in stolen motor vehicles and fraud, which can only be stopped by international co-operation. Seeking and locating the criminals involved poses problems relating to information exchange, international identification and arrests with a view to extradition. This is why Interpol-in accordance with Article 2 (1) of its Constitution-ensures the closest possible co-operation between the criminal police authorities of all member countries, including those in Africa. Crime is not associated with a particular region and is certainly not a problem for Africa alone. Ever since it was established, the International Criminal Police Organization - Interpol has been seen by countries all over the world as an institution whose principles and objectives correspond to universal aspirations for human rights, public safety and the fight against ordinary law crime.

History: Benin was the seat of one of the great medieval African kingdoms. During the 13th century, the indigenous Edo people were run by a group of local chieftains. However, by the 15th century, a single ruler, known as the oba , had asserted control. Under the dynasty established by Ewuare the Great –the most famous of the obas – Benin’s territory expanded to cover a region between the Niger river delta and what is now the Nigerian city of Lagos. The obas brought great prosperity and a highly organised state to Benin. They also established good relations and an extensive trade (which included slaves) with the Portuguese and Dutch, who arrived from the 15th century onwards. The decline of the obas Benin was thus the first country in the 1990s to effect successfully the transition from dictatorship to a pluralistic political system. In the most recent round of national assembly elections, held in March 1995, Soglo’s political vehicle, the Parti de la Renaissance du Bénin , was the largest single party but lacked an overall majority. The success of a party formed by supporters of ex-president Kérékou, who had officially retired from active politics, encouraged him to stand at both the 1996 and 2001 presidential elections, both of which were successful. On the latter occasion, however, numerous irregularities and dubious practices led to a boycott of the poll by the main opposition candidates.

I teach classes in the history, archaeology, and culture of Africa, and in comparative world civilizations. My research and teaching interests are interdisciplinary, intersecting the traditional boundaries of history, archaeology, and anthropology. Convinced that the historical experience of Africa is accessible from diverse sources, my pursuit of interdisciplinary approach to cultural historical analysis makes me aware of the many theatres in which history has been and is being produced, (re)enacted, and lived. Research
I have conducted research in Nigeria (West Africa), Ethiopia (East Africa), and the United States. In these countries, I have collaborated (Ethiopia and U.S.A.) and initiated (Nigeria) projects on different aspects of African cultural history stretching as far back as 100 A.D. in the case of Aksumite Civilization in Ethiopia, 1200 A.D. for Yoruba Civilization in West Africa, and as recent as early 19th century in the case of urban African-American communities in Boston (USA). The cultural history of Yoruba-Edo region in Nigeria has been the main focus of my research since 1990. The major theme of my research is the articulation of local historical experience in regional and global contexts. I am interested in how historical communities, peoples, and cultural ecumenes responded to, manipulated, and became part of regional and global historical processes (e.g, the Atlantic economy). I am also interested in how the cultural institutions and daily lives of African societies have been transformed as a result of these global/regional encounters. Within the framework of globa/regional/local intersections, my archaeological-historical research has been drawn to topics such as migrations, inter-group relations, ethnogenesis, political formation, material culture, and origins and transformations of cultural institutions.

The President, who wields executive power assisted by an appointed Cabinet of Ministers, is also directly elected for a five-year term.

About us
SWAPHEP was founded on August 10, 1998, by Hope E. Ogbeide (Initiator), Matthew Ogbodu, Mercy Ogbeide and Lambert O. Egharevba.
The idea to found an organization that focuses on water and public health started in Nassarawa State of Nigeria during the National Youth Service (NYSC) of Hope E. Ogbeide. Hope was moved to do something about the plight of the people in the state who drank very unclean water and hardly had access to pipe-borne water. The height of this was when a Youth Corps colleague of his started passing out blood-stained urine, which was a result of the unclean water which he had been consuming. PAST ACHIEVEMENTS: A. Successful Campaign against the dredging of Ikpoba River in Benin City. The dredging of Ikpoba River (a major source of domestic water to over 5,000 people in Benin City and surrounding communities in Edo State) began in February 2000 by the Edo State Government. SWAPHEP was the strongest NGO voice against the unwholesome act. After one year of serious field analysis, interviews (where

News, Africa In Internet Misanet IRIN - Benin Misanet.com / IPS, 9 March - Incomplete results from Benin's 4 March presidential election seem to indicate that history will be repeating itself in this small West African country. Although the partial outcome, announced by the National Autonomous Electoral Commission (CENA), has not yet been confirmed, one thing is for sure: there will be a runoff vote between current president Mathieu Kerekou and his predecessor, Nicephore Soglo. According to sources close to the CENA, Kerekou and Soglo, who are in the lead, will be authorised for a second round face-off on either 18 or 25 March, depending on when round one's results have been fully tallied. This scenario, which must be certified by the Constitutional Court, will seem familiar to most Beninese.
