Immediately north of the beach is a patchwork of shallow lagoons and estuaries, and farther north is a fertile highland called "Terre de Barre". North of the highland area the regularly flooded Lama marshlands are located, consisting of clayey soil difficult to drain.
Further north, the Lama marshlands open to arable land. However, the major part of the country's surface area is dominated by hardened, infertile and iron-containing soils. In northern Benin the land rises to include the edge of a 488-m high plateau of ancient rocks and mostly infertile soils and, in the northwest, the rugged Atakora Mountains (800 m). In the south, cultivated land including immense palm groves and coconut plantations lines the coast. The main rivers of northern Benin are the Niger, which forms part of the boundary with the republic of Niger, and its tributaries, the Sota, Mékrou, and Alibori rivers.

That's the portrait of Africa to which most of the travel industry limits itself; the overwhelming majority of Africa tours tend to be wildlife safaris. For viewing an altogether different aspect of that immense continent - the vitally important cultures, politics, and society of Africa-the travel programs are few and rarely available for less than $4,000 or $5,000 per person. advertisement
Until now, that is. Just in the past several years, a handful of dedicated Africa tour operators have begun to offer travel programs to the cities (and therefore the actual life) of Africa, priced as low as $2,500, and occasionally, for a breathtaking $1,550, including round-trip airfare from the United States. Though these expenditures are far above the usual recommended levels of Budget Travel, they are at least explained by the high airfare cost for reaching most African capitals, and they are justified by the importance of the subject matter.

African artists overcome maps again!
By Emeka Agbayi Some organisations are what they are only in name. This is more evident in this era of proliferation of NGOs, each trying to impress us and outdo the other with its high falutin, polysyllabic name, each trying to affirm its relevance by ascribing vast territories – Africa, the Caribbean, the Commonwealth as their areas of coverage. No doubt Overcoming Maps is an ambitions project, but going by the track record of the Pan Africa Circle of Artists, one can safely assume that it will be pulled off successfully. The study tour will last for about three weeks – from January 8-30, 2004 and will take the participants through some six African countries: Nigeria, Benin, Togo, Burkina Faso, Mali and Ghana. To document the historic event for posterity, the Pan-African Circle of Artists shall publish an exhibition catalogue as an accompaniment to the Overcoming Maps exhibition. There shall also be a book of general reports which will contain reports on various aspects of the tour, including the journeys themselves, the exhibitions and the roundtable conferences, to be published after the event. The book shall also feature photographs of important art sites, personalities, and artifacts in Africa, among other things. One cannot help but look forward with hope and copious enthusiasm that the Pan-African Circle of Artists pulls off this ambitious but necessary project. this is because Overcoming Maps has implications as grand as its dimensions. Incisively, one looks forward with hope and faith, not with trepidation, because Overcoming Maps comes as a sequel to Crossing Boundaries and Frontiers, a similarly grand event organised in 2002 by PACA. With the benefit of hindsight and experience, Overcoming Maps should be even more successful than the others.

A frican art - Ceremonial sculpture masks , and crafts produced by African tribal cultures , as well as by the African cultures of colonial and post-colonial periods. Generally African art means sub-Saharan art, with the cultures of Africa's northern parts typically referred to as Egyptian and North African. Making generalizations about the visual culture of any group of people is a crude endeavor, especially with a culture as diverse as Africa's. With this thought in mind, know that this survey, as any must be, is tremendously limited in its breadth and depth.

As a method of historical interpretation, African art possesses the ability to visually detail the construction of African cultural and material history. Artistic traditions graphically render African self-perception, yet art and material culture are very rarely critically examined by African historians.(1) The National Museum of African Art's joint exhibits, "The Ancient Nubian City of Kerma, 2500-1500 B.C.," and "The Ancient West African City of Benin, A.D. 1300-1897," provide a forum to address this oversight. Though not without minor short comings, they succeed in informing historian and layperson alike on topics relating to African artistic expression and self-representation in two historical contexts. The National Museum of African Art's brochure dutifully notes, "Most African art objects are made from organic materials," and therefore, "do not last long because they cannot resist the damaging effects of the climate and insects." In this light, the two recent exhibits are of particular significance, as their manufactures are of great permanence. The Kerma collection is constituted mainly by articles of four media; metals, precious minerals, ivory, and pottery. Royal Benin Art, on the other hand, highlights the medium of copper-alloy produced uniquely for a palatial setting.

Masks Rock Africa's Cradle of Voodoo, Explorer Says Chris Rainier
for National Geographic News Updated February 10, 2004 View a West Africa Dancing Mask Photo Gallery by Chris Rainier: Go: >> Editor's note: Chris Rainier is a National Geographic Society photographer and co-director of the Society's Ethnosphere Project, a series of expeditions over the next five years to study the web of cultural diversity around the Earth. Together with anthropologist and National Geographic Society Explorer-in-Residence Wade Davis, Rainier recently traveled through the West African countries of Benin and Togo to explore the roots of the voodoo religion in the cradle of its origin. Deep within the soul of Africa there can be heard a distant sound, the pulse of the rhythmic beat of dancing drums. Scattered throughout tiny villages during festival season, the dancing masks of West Africa can be heard and seen. Read the full Egunun masks during a ceremony in Benin, West Africa, pause to watch other masks dance. Waiting to possess people gathered to watch, the masks can be considered very dangerous. If touched by these powerful deities, a person can instantly die and be taken back to the afterworld.

Profile:
My research focuses on the anthropology of art. Within our field, art has typically been treated as a passive reflection of other, more important aspects of culture, but I am interested in its centrality in formulating identity and enacting political agendas. I conduct fieldwork in the Benin Kingdom of Nigeria, a research site that enables a long historical perspective on artistic production. My research has focused on the history of Benin art, particularly in the 18th century and 20th centuries, and on the social organization of guild artists and their notions about the nature of art. My main concern is the political and religious symbolism of royal and village arts. I am currently working on two projects. The first is a history of the study of art in anthropology, with special emphasis on the role of museums and worlds fairs. I teach courses on related topics, as well as regularly consulting with museums. The second is a project under the auspices of the Social Science Research Council Joint Committee on Africa. It focuses on popular arts and culture in Africa and relates to current concerns with local global interactions, the social life of things, and commodification.
