are a large group of beliefs and practices based upon ancient indigenous faiths of sub-Saharan African peoples. Within the last 100 years in Africa (see Table of Statistics ) indigenous religion has declined under the influence of colonialism, Western acculturation and proselytizing by Islam and Christianity. In the African Diaspora (mainly in the Americas) African-derived belief systems are in a state of impressive growth. ithin just the last two years the amount of information made available through the Internet is also impressive. Some of the best information comes to us from Italy, Sweden and Brazil. We are no longer dependent upon reports from academia or encyclopedias. There are now numerous websites maintained by the faithful themselves and, while the quality and quantity of information varies enormously among them, one may now hear from practitioners their own statements of faith. In many, if not most, cases African spirituality has evolved in the Americas. Ancient practices brought westward by slaves became syncretized, more or less, with religious traditions of the slaves' masters. This syncretization is most noticeable in areas dominated by the Catholic faith and where the celebration of saints, votive offerings and other practices found parallels in ancient traditions.

Benin Benin has one of the hottest attractions in all of West Africa - the stilted fishing villages in the lagoon near Porto Novo. The towns however - and even Cotonou, the biggest - may seem unremarkable to the short-term visitor. It's the kind of place that hides its best features. You need to be patient and observant to glimpse many of its cultural highlights. Beninese food is possibly the best in the region. There's also the fascinating cultures associated with Voodooism and fetishism, and their strangely attractive artefacts. Benin might be small and obscure, but when it does something, it does it in a big way. The people in the area established the biggest slave trade in West Africa, were members of the most powerful kingdom, have had the third-highest number of coups in Africa (and that means a lot!) and was the only country in West Africa to wholeheartedly adopt Marxism. While it shares many of the problems of its neighbours, such as bad roads and infrastructure, poor water and health conditions and institutionalised corruption, it is comparatively violence-free, is richer and economically stronger than most of its neighbours and has the best beaches and landscapes. Benin: Overview Benin is a developing West African country. Its capital city is Porto Novo; however, the city of Cotonou is the main port and largest city, site of the international airport and most government, commercial, and tourist activity. Tourist facilities are available in Cotonou but are not fully developed elsewhere. The ocean currents along the coast are extremely strong and treacherous (a rough surf and a strong undertow) and result in several drownings each year.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS: A passport and visa are required. Travelers should obtain the latest information from the Embassy of the Republic of Benin, 2737 Cathedral Avenue, N.W., Washington, D.C. 20008, telephone (202) 232-6656. Overseas, inquiries should be made at the nearest Beninese Embassy or Consulate. Travelers who intend to visit Nigeria should obtain Nigerian visas prior to arriving in Benin as the Nigerian Embassy in Cotonou may decline to consider applications for visas by U.S. citizens not resident in Benin.

, was strictly controlled by the Edo chiefs, called the uzama . The Edo loose village system, however, was profoundly changed by Eware (1440-1473), called Eware the Great. Eware transformed the village system into a hereditary and centralized monarchy that ruled through a royal council. This council was made up of the members of the uzama , and each member of the council had specific administrative duties. Through strategic military expansion, Benin expanded into an all-out empire in the Nigerian region.
Benin City . Early on in its history, people within the cities formed a rudimentary class system with the growth of craft and art guilds. Benin is particularly known for the explosion of artistic creativity following its formation and throughout its entire history. Benin art centered around sculpture, either terra cotta, ivory, or brass. In its early forms, Benin sculpture is primarily historical, recounting important events, such as the arrival of the Portugese, in magnificently detailed brass plaques and statuary. The Benin sculptors developed two unique features in the art: high realism and a high stylization of detail and ornament. Benin art became one of the most influential art traditions in west Africa, spreading throughout the cultures west and north of the Niger River.

Africa Cultures: Introduction
Under the direction of Olofin II Olofindji Akandé (Vizir of the Benin Association of Traditional Leaders), the Non-Governmental Organisation Africa Cultures (at Cotonou, Benin) Le retour des rois , Paris: Karthala, 2002. One of the most inspiring projects of Africa Cultures is that of Igbale-Aiye : a site near the Benin-Nigerian border, near Pobe, at a c. 100 km drive from Cotonou, where in plain rural conditions a shrine is erected that is to develop into a fitting monument for the souls of Africans who perished during the passage from Africa to the New World in the context of the trans-Atlantic slave-trade. Ultimately, the site is to grow into a major religious, intellectual and craft centre, with a bi-annual festival meant to attract pilgrims from all over Africa and especially from the New World.

T he plane was making its final descent and as required I fastened my seat belt meanwhile looking by the window to see the land where I will walk in less than five minutes. Africa, finally. Close to fourteen hours of travel, I am finally there. I was anxious, I realized, as I peaked at the window once more. What would I find in Africa? I've been raised as many of us to think of it as a "dark continent" inhabited by primitive people, a place where the light of civilization, or rather the light of so-called western civilization has not yet shined upon. I had been raised with Africa but have never met Africa. That was the purpose of my trip: to meet Africa, the true Africa, not the pale and dark shadow endowed to me by my western upbringing. E learnt to identify vodou with evil , for some to even look upon our language with disdain and we have been told not to listen and appreciate drum-based music. It is only recently that

http://www.afrikaworld.net/afrel/zinzindohoue.htm
TRADITIONAL RELIGION IN AFRICA: THE VODUN PHENOMENON IN BENIN Barthélemy ZINZINDOHOUE INTRODUCTION If it can be said that homo faber preceded homo sapiens , both these stages of humanity were borne by homo religiosus , an essential feature of man since the arousal of his consciousness. Indeed the religious phenomenon is not limited to a cult or an established link with the transcendent, but springs from the awareness of finiteness which gives rise to the need for the transcendent. Consequently, all men are religious, even if some are more religious than others, and the manifestations of human religiosity are numerous and owe much to the cultures of which they are the soul. In the specific case of the cultures of South Benin ( West Africa ), whose religious soul I wish briefly to present here, it appears that this is to be found in a convergent way in the phenomenon of Vodun . Most of the peoples of South Benin have very similar if not identical cultural roots, and almost the same historical origin. This is why the religious phenomenon in this geographical region is manifested most fully in Vodun (or Orisha , with the Nago or Yoruba peoples).

We set fire to the Queen Mother's house and those of several chiefs; the fire spread uncontrollably and destroyed a large part of the city. The royal palace was also burnt, although we claimed this was accidental. The royal palace of Benin was one of the great cultural complexes of Africa, a continent that, according to Victorians, wasn't supposed to have anything like it. It was a court as big as a European town. "It is divided into many palaces, houses, and apartments of the courtiers," reads Olfert Dapper's enthusiastic 1668 account, "and comprises beautiful and long square galleries... resting on wooden pillars, from top to bottom covered with cast copper, on which are engraved the pictures of their war exploits and battles... Every roof is decorated with a small turret ending in a point, on which birds are standing, birds cast in copper with outspread wings."

British Museum Sold Benin Bronzes
read also British Museum
The British Museum (BM) has sold more than 30 Benin bronzes since World War II, according to a file that has been declassified at the request of The Art Newspaper. Most went to Nigeria and were bought for under £100, although fine examples currently fetch up to £100,000. The selloffs are now strongly regretted by BM curators.
The bronze plaques were seized during the British "punitive expedition" against the Benin ruler in 1897, and since Nigerian independence in 1960 there have been numerous calls for the return of the royal treasures. Last January the lower house of the Nigerian Parliament unanimously called on the federal government to submit an official request for the return of the Benin bronzes.
A newly declassified 1972 report to the BM trustees admits that the Benin bronzes were "booty" but were nevertheless legally acquired by the museum. It has been no secret that a few BM bronzes were sold in the 1950s, but for different reasons neither the museum nor the Nigerian authorities have been keen to draw attention to the sales. Only now has the full extent of the de-accessioning become apparent. It also comes as a surprise that two Benin plaques were disposed of as late as 1972.
