Porto Novo - Culture Benin is located in West Africa and covers a land area of 112,622 Sq. km. and constitutes a long stretch of hand perpendicular to the Coast of the Gulf of Guinea.Porto novo is the capital of this country It is bordered on the North by Burkina Faso and the Republic of Niger, on the East by the Federal Republic of Nigeria and on the West by the Republic of Togo. With a 124 kilometers long coastline, it stretches North to South some 672 kilometers while its breath extends 324 kilometers at the evident point. It is above two third the Size of Portugal. Benin is characterized by unusually dry conditions. This is due primarily to two very important factors. First, the situation of the coast which is rather well protected from the western winds; second, the Atakora Barrier in the West and North West which decreases the amount of rainfall. The great part of the country is under the influence of transitional tropical conditions. Rainfall is not as abundant as found in areas with the same latitude thereby giving rise to tropical conditions known as the BENIN variant. These conditions are marked by a dry season from November to the beginning of April and a rainy season from the latter part of April to October. The Southern portion of the Republic of Benin, i.e. the Coastal zone, is under the influence of a Northern transitional equatorial climate characterized by a long dry season from November to the end of March, a first rainy season from April to July, a small dry period in August and a second rainy season in September and October.

Ife and Benin

Magnificent terracotta objects have been found in Nok, in Nigeria, dating back to a period some time between 500 BC and 500 AD. These are the earliest known sculptures on the continent, next to those of Ancient Egypt.
Later around 900 AD, the Igbo-Ukwo was making finely and intricately worked, bronze ceremonial objects. Against this background of creativity and craftsmanship, the Yoruba kingdoms of Benin and Ife sprang up between the 11th and 12th centuries.
ORIGINS
In Yoruba mythology, Ife was founded by a senior deity Oduduwa, acting on the order of the supreme deity Olorun (also known as Oludmare). Oduduwa became the first ruler, or Ooni, of Ife.
We know little of how these early Ooni exercised power or how their territory was administered, or precisely when the kingship started. We know that the landscape out of which Ife (and Benin) emerged consisted of a mixture of tropical forests and savannah land, affording very fertile soil and a high rainfall.
One of the keys to understanding the success and wealth of these kingdoms was the ability to provide a significant food surplus. This released labour, which could then be channelled into creating great works of art centred largely on celebrating kingship.

Collectively, culture is a way of life in a given society. Tourism is the vehicle through which this way of life is appreciated. In Nigeria, culture is manifested in art, dance, language, literature, folklore, mores, music, governance, and even the environment. According to archaeological finds, Nigeria’s artifacts depicting the early life of the people date back to 2000 years. The Nok Culture, the earliest of the finds depicted the early life of the people of the Nok region North of the Benue River. The characteristic features of the Nok culture, which flourished from 500, BC to AD 200 is the terracotta figurines associated with it and the extensive use of iron. The source of the knowledge of an iron technology has been attributed to the civilization of ‘Meroe’ in what is today the Republic of Sudan, as well as to Carthage in North Africa.

Casting is still made but there is nothing produced now to compare with the fabulous Ife and Benin Bronzes. These perfect example of portraiture and the "cire peerdue" method of casting, together with the equally perfect terracotta thought to be of the same period and possibly by the same craftsmen, have no equals anywhere.

Water and Culture
by Amy Gaspar , Dogbo Ahome, Benin In Benin, it is customary to offer water to visitors who enter your home. This simple gesture is very important in Beninese culture. It means that you are welcome to speak in the home as you please, with nothing to be nervous about. It is considered rude not to offer water and not to drink water that is offered. As a foreigner, it is not always in the best interest of my health to drink water that is offered to me. I was relieved to learn that I may simply pour a little water on the ground as a symbolic gesture. By pouring water on the ground, I am saying that I am not alonespirits accompany me, and I am offering them the water. I would just like to give you a little information on the Dogbo-Ahome water pump where I took the photos for this project. Dogbo-Ahome is a small village located southwest of my village. The pump was put in by a "white man's project" fifteen years ago. According to the local story, the first day the pump was available to the local villagers, everyone came to get water. The local voodoo queen did not get to the pump in time, and the water had already been turned off when her helpers got there. The queen was angry and told her helpers to return to the pump, that it would be running when they got there. Since that day the water has run all the time. Before this pump was put in the people had to rely on collected rainwater or walk three kilometers to a well. Now water is always available and free to everyone.
