Benin - Culture Overview
Benin is a small country with a vibrant cultural history. The 15th-century Kingdom of Allada was succeeded by the more famous and influential Kingdom of Dahomey in the area that is now Benin. These kingdoms engaged in active trading with the Europeans who eventually arrived and built forts along the coast, and many of the Africans sent as slaves to Brazil and the Caribbean carried the culture of Dahomey with them. In 1894 the French took control of the territory, ruling it as part of French West Africa until 1960. Since independence, problems with political leadership and a slow economy have not suppressed the lively cultural traditions of this West African nation, which changed its name from Dahomey to Benin in 1975.

Culture
The cultural history of Benin is rich, and for over a century the people's art has brought international attention to the legendary kingdom of Dahomy. Art has served both a functional and spiritual purpose, though before the 19th century, the most accomplished artists worked solely for the ruling kings of Abomey. The history of these times was told in the brightly coloured appliqu© tapestries. You will have no problems finding modern examples of this art form. Beninese bronzework is revered by collectors worldwide, though is no longer being produced in the quantities it once was. Bronze casting is said to have been halted after an Ife leader whose predecessor was immortalised in a bronze statue became so enraged he issued a death decree to people working in bronze. Several hundred years later, the ban still seems to be in place. The palace of Abomey also features bas-reliefs, which have been designated by UNESCO as objects of common heritage for humanity. There is a huge variety of religious and cultural dances that you might encounter in Benin. Some dance is choreographed in groups, but more often it's individual, intricate and amazingly expressive. Dances occur during special festivals such as

Benin Time and Date Benin Culture Back to Top French colonial rule and subsequent close ties with France have left a deep impact on all aspects of cultural life, especially among the educated segments of the population and in the southern cities. Each ethnic group also has its own centuries-old tradition, which itself often mixes with the French influence. These cultural traditions are clustered in two distinct regions, the largely Muslim north and the largely animist and Christian south. In other sections of the towns, however, tradition dominates cultural life. Extended families live in family compounds in distinct neighbourhoods, where they practice religious rites and celebrate festivals with music and dance. Markets where foodstuffs, clothing, and traditional medicines and arts are sold are important centres of daily life.

Living in huts built on stilts several kilometres away from the shore of the shallow lake made them safe from Fon warriors whose taboos prevented them from venturing on water. Benin is situated in West Africa and is bounded to the east by Nigeria, to the north by Niger and Burkina Faso, and to the west by Togo. Benin stretches 700km (435 miles) from the Bight of Benin to the Niger River. The coastal strip is sandy with coconut palms. Beyond the lagoons of Porto Novo, Nokoue, Ouidah and Grand Popo is a plateau rising gradually to the heights of the Atakora Mountains. From the highlands run two tributaries of the Niger, while southwards the Ouémé flows down to Nokoue lagoon. Mono River flows into the sea at Grand Popo and forms a frontier with Togo. Benin is once again making a name for itself as it embraces democracy with characteristic fervor and is catapulted onto the African stage as a model of reform. Benin is the birthplace of voodoo (voodoo museums of Ouidah). Voodoo ceremonies can be colorful events, involving feverish drumming and highly charged dancing by costumed fetish priests. The pirogue is the name of a traditional boat.

Description
The country we refer to as Benin today was once the powerful Kingdom of Dahomey. It was eventually nicknamed the Slave Coast because of the significant trafficking through Dahomey of Africans ( against their will ) to the Americas, specifically to the slave markets of Brazil and the Caribbean.
It was transformed into a French Colony in the late 1800s, finally gaining its full independence from France in 1960. The country's current name ( Benin ) was adopted in 1975.
Subsequently, it witnessed a series of military coups, a mistaken association with Marxism, and the somewhat typical health and infrastructure problems indigenous to its neighbors, and most West African countries.
As a new democracy, the brightside is Benin's economy is growing and tourism is on the increase, especially along the coastal areas, and in the wildlife national parks of the north.
Much of the interior population is still dependent on subsistence farming; growing beans, corn and yams. Important cash crops include cotton, cocoa and coffee.
