Understanding Narrative
The Praise Song Cultural Borrowing Objects of Power ... In and Out of Context The second part of this introductory essay consists of conversations between the authors. Bourgeois and Rodolitz have team-taught a web-based course on this subject for more than five years utilizing a dialogue medium that lends itself to immediacy and informality. Essays in the usual sense speak TO the reader; dialogue, however, allows the reader to participate, if only in an imaginary sense. Additionally, in the medium of dialogue, the evolution of thought is more apparent than in an edited essay. Often, the journey to a conclusion is as important as the conclusion itself. The reader is encouraged to join in this ongoing exploration. AB: Why don't we begin by considering a group of related objects, not necessarily related by culture but by function?

A 1994 peace accord between the government and the National Union for the Total Independence of Angola (UNITA) provided for the integration of former UNITA insurgents into the government and armed forces. A national unity government was installed in April of 1997, but serious fighting resumed in late 1998, rendering hundreds of thousands of people homeless. Contra attacks increase in Congo and Rwanda
By Norm Dixon While the United Nations, the aid industry and the world press continue to accuse without evidence the new government of the Democratic Republic of Congo of systematic human rights abuses during the uprising that overthrew the Mobutu dictatorship, they remain tight-lipped about counter-revolutionary massacres in eastern Congo. Ethnic chauvinism is again being whipped up by an alliance that includes remnants of Mobutu's defeated regime, the army and Interahamwe death squads of the genocidal former Rwandan government, overthrown in 1994, and supporters of the Kinshasa opposition leader Etienne Tshisekedi. Their goal is to depose the governments of Laurent Kabila and the Rwandan Patriotic Front in Kigali. On August 21, contras attacked a refugee camp in western Rwanda with guns and machetes, killing 107 and wounding 55. The camp housed Congolese Tutsis who had fled attacks by Mobutu's army and the Interahamwe in 1995 and 1996. The contras have set up bases in the Virunga mountain range on the border between Congo, Rwanda and Uganda, from where they launch attacks on schools, hospitals and government offices. Captured ex-FAR soldiers have disclosed that these attacks are intended to create insecurity and discredit the government by random killings of Tutsi civilians.

Glossary of Rhythms Glossary of Instruments Aba Cua (ah bah kwa ) is a rhythm and dance from a men's secret society in Cuba. The music, based in 6 feel, has strong elements of cross and polyrhythm, which add to its mysterious nature. Traditional instrumentation consists of three small single headed drums held on the shoulder and played with one hand, two basket rattles, a bell and one lead drum called bonko (bong koh ) which is the size of a small ashiko. It is held vertically and played with two hands in the same manner as a conga. Aba Cua has strong ties to Rumba Columbia and is sung in an African tongue from a region of Southwest Nigeria.
Afoxe' (ah foh shay ) is the common name of a social dance and music from Salvador da Bahia in the northeast of Brazil. The rhythm, which is properly called Ijexa, is from the Afro Brazilian Candomble (kahn dohm bley) tradition. Groups of people bring a secular version of the music and dance to the streets during Carnaval. Afoxe' (or afuche) is the name of a beaded gourd instrument used during parades. The rhythm and dance has became known by the name of the instrument. learn Afoxe'
Arara (ah raah raah ) is a music and dance form found in Cuba which is derived from the Fon and Eve (eh veh) culture of Ghana, Togo and Dahomey, now known as Benin. The dances and rhythms are extremely sophisticated and are considered less Creolized than other AfroCuban forms, due to the fact that the Arara slaves were brought to Cuba quite late in the history of colonialism. Arara music has it's own particular drums which are carved from logs and have a peg tuning system. The drums are played with sticks, stick and hand, and hands.

Conflict History
The DRC/Zaire became independent in 1960 from Belgium, but the country was ill equipped to govern itself. President Joseph Kasavubu and Prime Minister Patrice Lumumba had to deal with an army mutiny and Katanga announcing that it was seceding within a week after independence. In January 1961 Mr Lumumba was murdered by troops loyal to Col Joseph Mobutu. Several years of repeated rebellion in the northern and eastern areas of the country lead to Mobutu seizing power in coup in 1965. The country was renamed Zaire and Mobutu became Mobutu Sese Seko. In 1970 he became president. As a result of the Cold War, the US used Zaire as a base to support UNITA in Angola. The defence force of Zaire were not paid regularly and simply looted when additional banknotes were not printed to pay them. After the genocide in Rwanda in 1994, Hutu extremists/Interahamwe and ex-Rwandan armed Forces (FAR) fled with the Hutu refugees to eastern DRC. The Interahamwe and ex-FAR used the refugee camps to train recruits and Rwanda accused the Zairian government of aiding ex-FAR and Interahamwe militia to establish military bases of operation in the Masisi area, assisting them in the procurement of arms and the execution of cross-border attacks on Rwandan targets.
The situation in eastern DRC was historically tense with disputes over land tenure and ownership being a regularly feature. Colonial powers settled Banyarwandans (people from Rwanda) on vacant lands in eastern DRC, which according to local traditions belonged to indigenous customary Hunde chiefs. After independence in 1960, the Hunde chiefs, reasserting their rights, extorted high taxes and fines and sold land deeds at exorbitant prices, which enraged the Banyarwandans. The Zairian parliament granted nationality on a collective basis to the Banyarwanda on 26 March 1971, but it was amended on 29 July 1981 and nationality was given only to those who could prove that their ancestors had lived in Zaire since 1885. On 7 October 1996, the Deputy Governor of South Kivu, Lwasi Ngabo Lwabanji, announced that the more than 200,000 Banyamulenge had one week to leave Zaire.

(10/16/03) “My orientation program here at the Mindolo Ecumenical Foundation is drawing near to its conclusion at the end of this month. During these first few months in Zambia, I have enjoyed the benefits of residing here on this secure and comfortable campus whilst engaging in a cross-cultural program that is enlightening because it is done in a contextual format – I am not simply studying from textbooks but rather I am experiencing the local culture by being immersed within it. “Here in Kitwe, and in other parts of the nation frequented by tourists, there are magnificent palm trees in some of the parks and gardens, but these are not indigenous to central Africa. Instead, they were planted simply to provide and exotic atmosphere to please the tourists who arrive expecting Zambia to look suitable tropical. Much more in keeping with my own preconceptions are the truly beautiful arrays of tropical flowers that bloom in a profusion of colors all throughout the year! Whenever I sit on the wicker furniture in the screened porch at the front of my house, I am able to look out into my yard at the vibrant hues of poinsettia, bougainvillea and hibiscus. “Currently, I have a Provisional Drivers license, and sometime in the near future I will be taking my test to attain a regular Zambian driver’s license. I am also in the midst of trying to purchase an automobile: a task that is lengthened by my need to make an application for a customs duty exemption since the vehicle will become the property of the church upon my departure from Zambia. In the meantime, I am utilizing the public transportation system here in Kitwe. There are ‘mini-buses’ that serve the eight-kilometer route from Mindolo into Kitwe’s city center, and the fare one-way is the equivalent of only thirty U.S. cents, yet many Zambians walk from one place to another. It is hard for us in the west to imagine that people here cannot even afford the thirty cents for a mini-bus fare. One U.S. dollar will buy a bag of cornmeal for a family’s dinner, so the choice becomes quite obvious when comparing a round-trip mini-bus ride with food for feeding one’s hungry family.”

Although there are some variations according to geography, Lucumí/Santería practice in the Caribbean and United States remains consistent while Candomblé and Macumba traditions in Brazil vary significantly from Santería. Michael Spiro, a drummer and santero, claims, "all Santería is Cuban Santería. Candomblé of Brazil is different." While Santería derives mainly from the Yoruba people in Africa, in Haiti, the Vodou tradition developed in a similar fashion from a variety of different African groups, including Fon and Kongo combining with Catholicism and Masonic practices.
The documentary "Bahia, Africa in the Americas," states that Candomblé stands juxtaposed to Catholicism rather than being syncretic with it. (Brewer and University of California (System). Extension Media Center, 1988) Initiation into Santería is an intensive period of education and involves many rituals. The official initiation period takes one year; however, the process of preparing for that period may take much longer.

With this international group of musicians, he offers fans a mix of tunes from the Dead’s catalogue, his solo work and new material that will be recorded in the studio next year. It took place a day a before Hart’s birthday on Sept. 11. To celebrate, the notoriously busy person was actually taking a rare break from his numerous projects.

I K Dairo, MBE
a major African recording star
Introduction:
Whereas the last twenty years have seen a colossal amount of research carried out into all forms of black American traditional and popular music, the equivalent developments in Africa, often reflecting and drawing from these cultures, has largely been overlooked. The music of Africa is as diverse and as complex as the continent itself. In addition to the countless forms of native tribal music, many fascinating musicals hybrids have developed as a result of foreign influence - American, British, Latin, Arabic and Cuban amongst these. The development of Juju as a recognisable form also closely resembles that of the Blues from a rural background (the field holler and country dance tune) to a modern brash popular form (the music to be heard in a South Chicago bar). Juju is based on the centuries old traditional music of the Yoruba - choral singing and complex percussion - and was brought from the Nigerian countryside to the towns of Lagos and Ibadan by migrant workers in the Twenties and Thirties. Here the guitar lead was assimilated, often Western influenced, and, as cheap imports became available, progressively amplified. As with the Blues, Juju is essentially dance music however the vocals are far less radical or rebellious, normally extolling the virtues of traditional Yoruba values and achievements. Although not the founder of Juju, I K Dairo MBE was an important and influential exponent of the music and a top selling African recording artist of the sixties. This article is a portion of a slim volume 'Songs of I K Dairo MBE' delightfully written by Benson Corporo Okagbare, printed by the Nigerian National Press and published in 1969.
