Officials said 20 people on the boat were from Richmond, Virginia, while eight were from Belize. No identifications have yet been given on the dead, missing or survivors. Big Creek Port is an area that has been a safe haven from hurricanes in the past, but the eye of Iris passed directly over the port. The storm left 900 people homeless, said Prime Minister Said Wilbert Musa, who was on his way to Belize's coast Tuesday morning. Iris blew across the coast of Belize with winds of 140 mph (225 km) late Monday. It was a Category 4 hurricane when it made landfall, just one notch below the most severe hurricane.

Located 10 km east of San Ignacio town Belize, Central America... The Belize Valley Archaeological Reconnaissance Project is directed by Dr. Jaime Awe (pronounced Hi-may Ah-way) of the Department of Archaeology, Belize. Dr. Awe has been working in Belize for over 22 years and has experience directing investigations at the sites of Cahal Pech Xunantunich Caracol Lamanai ... Baking Pot and Pacbitun. He received his M.A. from Trent University in Canada, and his Ph.D. from the University of London in England. Dr. Awe also directs investigations in several cave sites in the area, and his preliminary exploration of Actun Tunichil Muknal was featured in a 1993 National Geographic Explorer documentary film titled, "Journey through the Underworld." At the ancient Maya site of Baking Pot, investigations will include extensive excavation, mapping, and survey. Students will be involved in all aspects of the archaeological investigations, from the excavation of prehistoric Maya architecture to the illustration of the artifacts recovered from the site. In addition to the excavation and mapping of cultural remains, the project will also involve laboratory work where students will participate in the preliminary analysis of ceramic and lithic artifacts plus human and animal remains. Lectures will provide an overview of Maya civilization and will address other specific topics such as Maya household archaeology, Maya ideology, archaeological survey methods, human osteology, and Postclassic Maya achievements.
