... Central America /Belize BELIZE History and Government
History: The region was at the heart of the Mayan empire (circa AD300 to AD800), which subsequently migrated to Yucatán. The country’s modern history really begins when Belize, formerly British Honduras, was occupied by the British in 1638–40, with settlements spreading as woodcutting became profitable. By the end of the 18th century, Africans were brought in as slaves, to cut the mahogany. Despite attacks from the Spanish, the settlers remained, although it was not until 1862 that the territory was recognised as a British colony. The country achieved internal self-government in 1964. Elections in 1965 brought the leader of the People’s United Party (PUP), George Price, to power. A bicameral legislature was then introduced. The PUP won every election held subsequently until 1984, when the United Democratic Party (UDP) took power for the first time. The new government remained committed to the mainstays of Belizean policy – growth through foreign investment, membership of CARICOM (the Caribbean Common Market) and a settlement of the long-running dispute with neighbouring Guatemala. Price was returned to office in September 1989. Tensions have long existed between Belize and Guatemala, because, even though the boundary between them was determined in 1859, Guatemala continued to claim sovereignty of Belize. Throughout the 1970s, British troops were sent over to deter Guatemalan invasion threats. Following lengthy negotiations, Britain agreed to grant Belize independence in 1981. However, the new Guatemalan president, Jorge Serrano, who took office in January 1991, declared his government’s urgent desire to reach a settlement. An agreement was duly reached in September 1991 (including the establishment of diplomatic relations), under which Guatemala recognised Belizean sovereignty (although it maintains its territorial claim) in exchange for access to Belizean ports. In May 1993, the British garrison withdrew. Shortly afterwards, Premier George Price called a snap election. Despite expectations, his PUP was narrowly defeated by Manuel Esquival, the new leader of the UDP.

A History of Belize

A Brief History of Belize A brief history of Belize can be divided in major four periods. Following is a very brief synopsis of these periods. You can view a complete timeline to Belizean History HERE
Archaeologists estimate that at their peak, 1 to 2 million Mayans lived within the borders of present day Belize. Mighty Maya cities such as Caracol Xunantunich and Lamanai dotted the landscape, with small agricultural communities farming the land between. The Maya civilization is divided into the Pre-Classic (1000 B.C. to A.D. 300), the Classic (A.D. 300 to 900) when the civilization reached its height of development, and the Post-Classic (A.D. 1000 to 1500) when the civilization fell apart and disappeared. No one knows for certain what caused the disappearance of the Maya. Perhaps it was war, loss of faith, famine or a series of natural disasters.
Christopher Columbus sailed along the coast of Central America in 1502, and named the bay which borders the southern part of the barrier reef Bay of Honduras. The first settlers in Belize were English Puritans, setting up trading post along the coast of Belize. Various bands of ship wrecked sailors, buccaneers and pirates established permanent bases in Belize, harrassing the Spanish galleons carrying gold, silver, and hardwoods from Central America to Europe. It wasn't long before logging became the dominant occupation.

Who was Basil Jones?

Blake Dynasty

In the 20th Century
Basil Jones in the Spanish Colonial Period
In 1798 it was apparent that the Spanish were planning to invade, Basil Jones assisted the Baymen acting as a lookout, from his plantation on Ambergris Caye. When the inevitable arrival of the Spanish Fleet, did occur, some where around September 10, 1798, Basil spotted the approaching Fleet and went by boat to St. Georges Caye to warn the Baymen Commander.

On September 13, 1869, Ambergris Caye was auctioned off to settle the estate of former owners. James Hume Blake bought Ambergris Caye for $625 in gold, and that began the Blake Dynasty that lasted for some ninety years.
On 10th February 1887 Registry records show that the Blakes gave a twenty-one year lease of the Robles and the Basil Jones Savannah, at an annual rent of twenty dollars to George James Parham. Parham was an expatriate Englishman, a merchant and chicle contractor, who later married Juanita Blake, one of Blakes two daughters.

Belize, unique and unusual, is an exciting destination for the traveler seeking to experience different cultures and exotic environments. An English-speaking, democratic nation, Belize is blessed with an amazing variety of bio-geographic regions, including the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, hundreds of tiny cays (as the Belizeans call their islands, pronounced 'keys'), miles of unexplored beaches, and world class diving, snorkeling, and fishing. Stretching 165 miles from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Bay of Honduras, the Belize barrier reef is renowned as one of the most pristine in the world. A fantastic diversity of habitat is here, including hundreds of islands, extensive shallow water flats, mangrove ranges, and innumerable coral reefs. But Belize is much more than a water sports destination - this is a country that is bestowed with the largest remaining tracts of undisturbed rainforests in all of Central America. Its bird life is world famous, and birders can often record dozens of new species each day. Wildlife abounds - the rainforests are home to jaguar and mountain cow, tayra, agouti, and howler monkey. Geography Approximately 9000 Square miles bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Belize has the second longest barrier reef in the world (175 miles long). The land is flat at the coast and rises to 3000 ft inland. Jungle and rainforest cover the northern central and southern regions with dry pine savannah in the west.

Basic Facts Introduction. Two themes dominate the history of Belize:
  • the outward struggle to establish and maintain an English-speaking nation in an area dominated by Hispanic peoples and culture, and the inward interaction between groups of different races and cultural backgrounds.
  • Understanding contemporary social relations and the politics of Belize depends on understanding these diverse groups and their interpretations of past events. Like many nations that have recently emerged from colonialism, Belize has a population that is fragmented into many racial and cultural groups. These groups all have different interpretations of key events in Belize's history. The subjugation of the indigenous people, the rivalry between Spain and Britain, slavery and the process of emancipation, the legacy of colonization, and the position of Belize in the modern world have all been subject to reinterpretation and debate. Despite the gradual emergence of a national identity, the differences among ethnic groups and their divergent outlooks on the present and the past play an important role in Belize today.
