The History Numerous ruins indicate that for hundreds of years Belize was heavily populated by the Maya Indians, whose relatively advanced civilization reached its height between A.D. 250 and 900. Eventually the civilization declined leaving behind small groups whose offspring still exist in Belize contributing positively to the culturally diverse population. In 1502, Columbus sailed through parts of the Caribbean, but did not actually visit the area later known as British Honduras. The first reference to European settlement in the colony was in 1638. These were later augmented by disbanded British soldiers and sailors after the capture of Jamaica from Spain in 1655. The settlement, whose main activity was logwood cutting (logwood was used in the past to produce dye), had a troubled history during the next 150 years. It was subjected to numerous attacks from neighbouring Spanish settlements (Spain claimed sovereignty over the entire New World except for regions in South America assigned to Portugal). It was not until 1763 that Spain in the Treaty of Paris allowed the British settlers to engage in the logwood industry. The Treaty of Versailles in 1783 reaffirmed those boundaries and logwood concession was extended by the Convention of London in 1786. But Spanish attacks continued until a decisive victory was won by settlers, with British naval support, in the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798. After that, British control over the settlement gradually increased and in 1871 British Honduras was formally declared a British Colony.

This website takes us on a journey through time and gives us the opportunity to study the complex society we see today in this small Central American nation. History is never complete for it is created every day. The people, places and events presented in this website demonstrates how important history is to a nation. HISTORY
The Mayan civilization spread into the area of Belize between 1500 BC and AD 300 and flourished until about AD 1200. Several major archeological sites notably Caracol, Lamanai, Lubaantun, Altun Ha, and Xunantunich reflect the advanced civilization and much denser population of that period. European contact began in 1502 when Columbus sailed along the coast. The first recorded European settlement was begun by shipwrecked English seamen in 1638. Over the next 150 years, more English settlements were established. This period was also marked by piracy, indiscriminate logging, and sporadic attacks by Indians and neighboring Spanish settlements. Great Britain first sent an official representative to the area in the late 18th century, but Belize was not formally termed the Colony of British Honduras until 1840. It became a crown colony in 1862. Subsequently, several constitutional changes were enacted to expand representative government. Full internal self-government under a ministerial system was granted in January 1964. The official name of the territory was changed from British Honduras to Belize in June 1973, and full independence was granted on September 21, 1981.

Origin of the name "Caye Caulker" On early British maps the island's name is spelled "Cay Corker." Known historically for its plentiful supply of exposed fresh water at La Aguada, one theory holds that this island was a favourite stop for sailors to replenish and cork water bottles. The Spanish name of the island is Cayo Hicaco, which means "the island of the cocoplum." "Caye Caulker" could be an anglicized pronunciation of Cayo Hicaco. Another theory is that boats were caulked in the protected bay, La Ensenada, on the western side of the island leading to the "Caulker" name.

A Very Brief History of Caye Caulker Recent history of Caye Caulker began when Mestizo refugees from the Mexican Caste Wars arrived. The caye was formally purchased by Luciano Reyes around 1870. Lots were sold to six or seven families, most of which still have descendants on the island today. The influence of these families is still very apparent. With few inhabitants, food could be grown with sustainable methods of agriculture. The coconut and the fishing industry became important economic staples of the island. Even today a few of the older women continue to process coconut oil for their own use and to sell, although generally the coconuts themselves are harvested and shipped to the mainland.

is a small nation in Central America, on the Caribbean Sea bordering Mexico to the northwest and Guatemala to the west and south. Honduras lies 75 km away at the two nations' closest point across the Gulf of Honduras to the east. In the Spanish language Belize is usually called Belice . Belize was formerly known as British Honduras and the current name is derived from Belize City and the Belize River. Belize City is the country's only city, as well as the principal port and its former capital. Click the link for more information. The Maya civilization The Maya are a people of southern Mexico and northern Central America with some 3,000 years of rich history. The Maya were part of the Mesoamerican Pre-Columbian cultures. Contrary to popular myth, the Maya people never "disappeared"; millions still live in the region, many of them still speak one of the Maya family of languages. This article will mostly concern itself with their civilization before the conquest by Spain.

THE GREATEST SCAM IN BELIZE'S HISTORY
Produced by the Belize Development Trust

The Reporter, June 11, 2000 The case against the Social Security Board, which has paid out $4.86 million in worker savings to buy $1.34 million worth of shares Belize Electric Company continues to rile Belizeans of all ages who are calling it the greatest scam of all time. At all material times, Ralph Fonseca was the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Belize Electricity Board. He also represented himself as Minister of Finance when in actual fact he was only the Minister of State in the Ministry of the Prime Minister. Opening Moves In January 1991, Fonseca invited bids from international companies to construct and operate a hydroelectric facility on the Macal River. At the same time he missioned Canadian consultants CI Power to perform a feasibility study for the said project. On April 19,1991, four months before the Canadian study was completed, he signed a contract to involve the government of Belize and Belize Electricity Limited in a tri-partite arrangement with DEI IEEI and BEL. Rock solid guarantees such as 120 KVa take-or-pay were also part of the deal.

Mestizos (of mixed Maya Indian and European ancestry) are the largest ethnic group, accounting for more than two-fifths of the population. English-speaking people of largely African and African-European ancestry, who are called Creoles, account for nearly one-third of the population and predominate in the central coastal regions. Mestizos predominate in the more sparsely inhabited interior, along with the Maya, who account for one-ninth of the population. Several thousand Garifuna, formerly called Black Caribs, who are descendants of the Carib Indians and Africans exiled from British colonies in the eastern Caribbean (Lesser Antilles) in the 18th century, live in communities on the south coast. People of European and East Indian ancestry are also present, as are smaller numbers of Chinese, Arabs, and others.

Belize City - History N umerous ruins of ancient cities and pyramid-style ceremonial centers show that for hundreds of years, Belize was heavily populated by up to a million Maya Indians, who built elaborate cities and temples, and created advanced mathematics, astronomy, engineering and art. The Mayan empire, centered in Belize, reached its height between AD 300 and 900, and then rapidly declined. Historians and archaeologists have several theorieswar, drought, rebellion, religious and cultural conflict are but a fewbut whatever the reason, by the time the Spanish arrived in the early sixteenth century, most of the Mayans had disappeared and their once-huge cities were covered over by the jungle. In 1502, Columbus sailed into and named the Bay of Honduras, but did not actually visit the area later to be known as British Honduras. The first recorded European settlement was established in 1638 by shipwrecked British sailors. This settlement was later augmented by disbanded British soldiers after the the capture of Jamaica from Spain in 1655. The settlement, whose main purpose was logwood cutting (logwood was used in the past to produce a dye) had a troubled history during the next 150 years. The woodcutters, who called themselves "Baymen," were subjected to numerous attacks by the Spanish, who claimed sovereignty over the entire New World except for regions in South America assigned to Portugal; English pirates also fought back by raiding passing Spanish ships.

San Ignacio - History The first inhabitants of Belize were the Maya and Carib Indians. Belize was a part of the great Mayan empire which stretched through Guatemala, southern Mexico and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Though the history of the Maya can be traced back for over 4000 years, the Classic Period of more advanced Mayan civilization began around the 3rd century AD and reached its height between the 6th and 8th centuries. By the 14th century it was in serious decline. An anti-Spanish rebellion broke out in 1638, driving out the Europeans for almost sixty years. The rebels of Tipu continued to hold on to their Maya customs. The Spaniards eventually gained control of Tipu in 1707, forcing the Mayas to Lake Peten. During the time the Mayas were in Tipu they had built only a few masonry buildings of which none remain. After WWII, Belize's economy weakened, leading to agitation for independence. Democratic political parties and institutions were formed and self-government was granted in 1964. The government decided to build a new capital at Belmopan in 1970, after Hurricane Hattie all but destroyed Belize City in 1961. Full independence became a reality in September 1981 when British Honduras officially became Belize. Guatemala, which had territorial claims on Belize, threatened war in 1972, but British troops were stationed in Belize to make sure the dispute remained purely diplomatic. During the volatile 1980s, Belize remained stable and pro-US, thanks predominantly to large influxes of US aid. In 1992, a new Guatemalan government recognized Belize's territorial integrity. The British garrison was withdrawn in 1994; Belize now has a standing army of only 550 soldiers.
