Glyphs Timeline The Future The exciting prehistory of Mesoamerica is just coming to light in the past few years. Beginning with the Spanish conquest, we have a record of Mesoamerica and the Mayan Empire for the past five hundred years. Today, thanks to recent discoveries in the interpretation of the Mayan written language, we are beginning to scratch the surface of three thousand years of history. Many Mayan ruins that have been archeologically explored and excavated have not yet had their glyphs translated. The few that have reveal a world of pre Spanish city states that warred with each other for several thousand years. Many ruins exist in the jungles of Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Peten, which until today have not yet been excavated to reveal their history. many more ruins are yet to be found. The city states of Mesoamerica rivaled, and probably surpassed, the social organization and development of Medieval cities in Europe.
This is an exciting time for archeology and anthropology students, because the history of the early Maya civilization is yet to be filled in by field studies. Now that the written language is being deciphered, we will in future years be able to compile a history going back in some cases for four thousand years, long before the time of Christ.

History of Belize
N umerous ruins indicate that for hundreds of years Belize was heavily populated by the Maya Indians, whose relatively advanced civilization reached its height between A.D. 300 and 900. The civilization collapsed and many of the people migrated. In 1502, Columbus sailed into and named the Bay of Honduras but he did not actually visit the area later known as British Honduras. T he first recorded European settlement was established in 1683 by shipwrecked British sailors. These were later augmented by disbanded British soldiers and sailors after the capture of Jamaica from Spain in 1655. The settlement, whose main activity was logwood cutting, had a troubled history during the next 150 years. It was subjected to numerous attacks from neighboring Spanish settlements. I t was only in 1763 that Spain in the Treaty of Paris allowed the British settlers to engage in the logwood industry. This was reaffirmed by the Treaty of Versailles in 1783 and the area of logwood concession was extended by the Convention of London in 1786. But Spanish attacks continued until a decisive victory was won by settlers, with British naval support, in the Battle of St. George's Caye in 1798. A fter that British control over the settlement gradually increased and in 1862 British Honduras was formally declared a British Colony. From an early date the settlers had governed themselves under a system of primitive democracy by Public Meeting. A constitution based on this system was granted in 1765 and this, with some modification continued until 1840 when an Executive Council was created. The Crown Colony system of Government was introduced in 1871, and the Legislative Assembly by its own vote was replaced by a nominated Legislative Council with an official majority presided over by the Lieutenant Governor.

T he largest of the 200 plus islands of Belize, Ambergris Caye (Am-BURR-jis Key) is a twenty five mile long island made up of three main areas. Mangrove swamps, lagoons, and sand. The lagoons are to the western (leeward) side of the island. The Barrier Reef lies about a half mile to the east of the island, running the entire length, the reef and the land touching at the northeast of the island at Rocky Point. The sand reaches a height of three to five feet above sea level, to a maximum of 10 feet at San Pedro Town.

History
The first inhabitants of Belize were the Maya and Carib Indians. Belize was a part of the great Mayan empire which stretched through Guatemala, southern Mexico and parts of Honduras and El Salvador. Though the history of the Maya can be traced back for over 4000 years, the Classic period of more advanced Mayan civilization began around the 3rd century AD and reached its height between the 6th and 8th centuries. By the 14th century it was in serious decline. When the Spanish arrived in the 16th century, many of the Mayan cities were deserted. The Spanish considered Belize a backwater suitable only for cutting logwood to be used for dye. Although the Spanish 'owned' Belize, they did not rule it. The lack of effective government and the safety afforded by the reef attracted English and Scottish pirates during the 17th century. When piracy became pass©, many of the pirates began working in the logging trade. Belize was British by tradition and sympathy by the time that a British force routed the Spanish armada off St George's Caye in 1798, delivering Belize from Spanish rule. In 1862, while the USA was embroiled in its Civil War and unable to enforce the terms of the Monroe Doctrine which closed the Western Hemisphere to colonization, Great Britain declared Belize to be the colony of British Honduras. Since the fall of General Noriega in Panama, Belize has become a major transshipment point for cocaine heading into the US from South America. Cultivation and smuggling of marijuana is also prevalent.

Archaeologists have determined that the Maya settled in Belize as early as 1500 BC. Their civilization reached its height between AD 250 and 900 - descendants of the Maya continue to live in Belize today. The Spanish claimed Central America along with the rest of their New World possessions, but they didn't settle the area that would become Belize. The first sustained European presence came instead from British buccaneers and shipwrecked British sailors, who soon realized that Belize's forests of mahogany were a valuable commodity. Slaves were brought in to harvest the timber, and the Baymen - as the British settlers were known - began to extract a tidy profit from the jungle. Spain continued to claim the area, however, and the decisive battle between the Spanish and British was fought 10 September 1798, off St. George's Caye. The British won and continued to rule the area despite advances by Mexico and Guatemala in the 1820s. The settlement became known as British Honduras, though it wasn't until 1862 that it officially became a British colony. In 1973 the name was changed to Belize, and on 21 September 1981, the country declared its independence from Britain.

Belize Time and Date Belize History Back to Top Two themes dominate the history of Belize: the outward struggle to establish and maintain an English-speaking nation in an area dominated by Hispanic peoples and culture, and the inward interaction between groups of different races and cultural backgrounds. Understanding contemporary social relations and the politics of Belize depends on understanding these diverse groups and their interpretations of past events. The first English settlers arrived in the early 1600s in present-day Belize (known as the Settlement of Belize in the Bay of Honduras prior to 1862 and British Honduras from 1862-1973). Their arrival marked the beginning of a conflict with neighboring Spanish settlers that lasted for centuries. For the first 200 years, this conflict was part of the larger rivalry between Britain and Spain. In the early 1800s, after most of the Spanish colonies in the New World became independent, the conflict in Belize evolved into a Guatemalan territorial claim on the area that continued into the 1990s. Like many nations that have recently emerged from colonialism, Belize has a population that is fragmented into many racial and cultural groups. The two largest groups are the Creoles, English-speaking or Creole-speaking blacks and people of mixed African and European heritage, and the Mestizos, Spanish-speaking people of mixed Mayan and Spanish European. Two other significant groups are the Garifuna, a group of African and Carib ancestry originally from the Lesser Antilles, and the Maya, descendants of the original inhabitants of Belize.

For books, click travel guides From the 4 th to 9 th century, the ancient Mayan civilization flourished in Belize, reaching an estimated population of 400,000 in the country at its peak. The Mayans were excellent craftsmen, skilled at making pottery, carving jade and crafting elaborate costumes of feathers, but are perhaps most famous for their incredible mathematical systems and calendars and their use of a complex writing system that is still not completely deciphered. In the 10 th century however, the Belize population began suffering a mysterious decline and most immigrated to Yucatan. But there were still many inhabitants in Belize when the Spanish arrived and began conquering much of the Americas in the 16 th century. The Spaniards tried to control Belize as well, but the Mayan warriors held them back. Even though the Spanish never managed to get a lasting hold on the area, they further decimated the Mayan population with the spreading of European diseases.

HISTORICAL OVERVIEW Belize, with an area of 8,867 sq. miles or 23,000 sq. kilometers and a population of 205,000 inhabitants, is an independent English speaking country in Central America. It has often times been referred to as the bridge between the Caribbean and Central America and remains a part of the British Commonwealth of Nations with Queen Elizabeth II of Great Britain as the titular Head of State. A Prime Minister and Cabinet make up the executive branch, while a 29 member elected House of Representatives and 8 member appointed Senate form a bicameral legislature. The Government of Bleize is operated on the principles of parliamentary democracy, based on the Westminister System.
