Garifuna settlement, Scottish buccaneers, and a hundred years as a colony of GreatBritain have all contributed to the cultural mosaic we find in belize today.
http://www.islandexpeditions.com/belize.html
Belize, unique and unusual, is an exciting destination for the traveler seeking to experience different cultures and exotic environments. An English-speaking, democratic nation, Belize is blessed with an amazing variety of bio-geographic regions, including the longest barrier reef in the Western Hemisphere, hundreds of tiny cays (as the Belizeans call their islands, pronounced 'keys'), miles of unexplored beaches, and world class diving, snorkeling, and fishing. Stretching 165 miles from the Yucatan Peninsula to the Bay of Honduras, the Belize barrier reef is renowned as one of the most pristine in the world. A fantastic diversity of habitat is here, including hundreds of islands, extensive shallow water flats, mangrove ranges, and innumerable coral reefs. But Belize is much more than a water sports destination - this is a country that is bestowed with the largest remaining tracts of undisturbed rainforests in all of Central America. Its bird life is world famous, and birders can often record dozens of new species each day. Wildlife abounds - the rainforests are home to jaguar and mountain cow, tayra, agouti, and howler monkey. Geography Approximately 9000 Square miles bordered by Mexico to the north, Guatemala to the west and south and the Caribbean Sea to the east. Belize has the second longest barrier reef in the world (175 miles long). The land is flat at the coast and rises to 3000 ft inland. Jungle and rainforest cover the northern central and southern regions with dry pine savannah in the west.

Through our association with local residents, conservation organizations, and the most experienced and respected lodges, guides and outfitters, we offer you a premier program of small group departures, honeymoon adventures, family trips, and individual custom itineraries. We direct you away from crowded tourist sites to more remote and pristine marine and terrestrial environments. The rain forests and Maya ruins of Tikal National Park, Guatemala are included in many itineraries we design, and it is just as easy to add the ancient city of Copan, Honduras, a short flight south from Belize City. Belize is an active participant in a multilateral arrangement linking neighboring countries such as Guatemala, Mexico, Honduras and El Salvador, which encourages conservation and ecotourism in the region through the Mundo Maya initiative.

As a private 340-acre nature reserve set along the banks of the Macal River in the foothills of the Maya Mountains, we have provided a unique rainforest experience for thousands of people while maintaining an unspoiled ambience. Chaa Creek Inland Expeditions caters to the traveler looking for both physical and intellectual challenges, and our range of programs and activities have been designed to stimulate interest in the environment, culture and archaeology of Belize. We were awarded the 1998 Green Hotel of the Year by American Express and the Caribbean Hotel Association. Our jungle lodge is comprised of 18 comfortable palm-thatched cottage rooms, two garden suites, two treetop suites, and an orchard villa, nestled along the riverside in a setting of unmatched beauty and tranquility. Guests can interact with nature by exploring the river and miles of well-maintained trails, Mayan temple sites, and through activities such as hiking, canoeing, horseback riding, mountain biking and bird watching. Wildlife abounds, and some 250 species of birds have been sighted within the reserve. The Camp at Chaa Creek located within the nature reserve a half-mile down river from the lodge, features ten fully-screened casitas, each having two comfortable beds with fresh linens and a private sheltered porch for quiet relaxation and peaceful views in the undisturbed jungle habitat. A traditional Mestizo kitchen providing wholesome, traditional Belizean meals, and friendly local staff ensure a unique, comfortable rainforest experience.
