Belmopan - Culture Mayan woman The Maya built breathtaking temple complexes aligned to the movement of celestial bodies. Although they remained technically a Stone Age culture, they also developed sophisticated mathematics, astronomy and calendars. The Spanish constructed some plain stone churches, but the modern architecture is predominantly British Caribbean in style. Belize is officially English-speaking, but the Creoles (the largest ethnic group) speak their own colorful dialect as well as standard English. Spanish is the main language in the north and some towns in the west. You may also hear Mayan, Chinese, Mennonite German, Lebanese, Arabic, Hindi and Garifuna (the language of the Garinagu people of Stann Creek district) being spoken. The majority of Belize's population are Roman Catholics, but British influence has created a sizable and varied protestant congregation, including German Swiss Mennonites. The Mayan practice of Catholicism is a fascinating fusion of shamanist-animist and Christian ritual. Belize has never really developed a national cuisine. Its cooking borrows elements from the UK, the USA, Mexico and the Caribbean. The traditional staples are rice and beans. These are often eaten with chicken, pork, beef, fish or vegetables. Coconut milk and fried plantain add a tropical flavor. Exotic traditional foods include armadillo, venison and paca (a small brown-spotted rodent similar to a guinea pig).

6 districts; Belize, Cayo, Corozal, Orange Walk, Stann Creek, Toledo Belize People Back to Top Many Belizeans are of mixed ancestry, most of them descendant of immigrants. Mestizos (of mixed Maya Indian and European ancestry) are the largest ethnic group, accounting for more than two-fifths of the population. English-speaking people of largely African and African-European ancestry, who are called Creoles, account for nearly one-third of the population and predominate in the central coastal regions. Mestizos predominate in the more sparsely inhabited interior, along with the Maya, who account for one-ninth of the population. Several thousand Garifuna, formerly called Black Caribs, who are descendants of the Carib Indians and Africans exiled from British colonies in the eastern Caribbean (Lesser Antilles) in the 18th century, live in communities on the south coast. People of European and East Indian ancestry are also present, as are smaller numbers of Chinese, Arabs, and others.

CULTURE A short history of the Garifunas
The Jaguar Reef Lodge is located just one mile from the fascinating Garifuna village of Hopkins.
One of the most remarkable things about the Garifunas is their brief but unusual history. They came into existence almost by accident. Roots in the slave trade
In 1634, English slave ships sailing from Africa were wrecked off the coast of the Caribbean Island of St. Vincent. The Africans who staggered ashore joined the Arawak Indians living there and started a new life. The blending of these two cultures created the Garifunas. As time went on, the Garifunas on St. Vincent farmed and fished and joined the French who had set up farming enterprises. It was a time when the English were in conflict with the French. The English wanted to develop St. Vincent for their sugar plantations. From St. Vincent to Honduras
Two years of war by the English against the French and Garifuna ended in 1797. The English won, and just to be sure they will not longer be threatened by the Garifunas who proved to be fierce guerilla fighters, they packed up most of them, around 3,000 in 10 ships. The English sailed them to the Island of Roatan in the Bay Islands of Honduras and left them there. The Garifunas discovered that the Island was not a good place to start over, and soon headed to the mainland of Honduras, where they founded villages along the coast. From Honduras they spread to British Honduras (Belize).
