http://expedition.bensenville.lib.il.us/CentralAmerica/Belize/culture.htm
Belize - Culture Overview The small population of Belize is culturally diverse. This multiplicity of ethnicities, languages, religions, modes of dress, cuisines, styles of music, and folklore reflects the cultural mix. There are many ethnically distinct communities, but people of different groups also mix in many social contexts: at work, in schools, and in the political parties that are not ethnically based. Though prejudices exist, there is no history of interethnic violence in Belize.
The social class of the people—whether they are poor or middle class—affects whether they will have such amenities as a car or television and influences as well whether their children will complete secondary school. Belizeans who have television watch mostly foreign programs, such as Mexican soap operas and North American sports; and the music they listen to largely reflects the traditions of their ethnic group, though recorded music from the Caribbean and United States is widely enjoyed by young people. One hybrid musical form, “punta rock,” seems to blend Caribbean soca, calypso, and reggae styles with merengue, salsa, and hip-hop. Also popular are the traditional sounds of brukdown—the tapping of assorted bottles, tables, cans, or other objects—an energetic percussion that originated in the logging camps.
Some Belizeans are cosmopolitan and communicate by fax and e-mail, but for the average citizen, who is served by poor roads and social services, the nation still feels like a rural frontier.

History Of Belize

CULTURE
Belize is a country of various culture, language and ethnic groups. Approximately 200,000 people in Belize consist of Creole, Garifuna, Mestizo, Spanish, Maya, English, Mennonite, Lebanese, Chinese, and East Indian. Due to racial harmony and religious tolerance, all of these different elements have mixed and blended successfully, and Belize has gained a widespread reputation for its friendly peoples. One of the most prominent ethnic group is the Creoles, which formed 30% of the population in 2001. Creoles are descendants of the intermingling of the early British settlers with African slaves. More than 40% of the population are Mestizos. They are descendants of mixed blood Mexicans and Yucatec Mayans who fled from Yucatan in the mid 1800's. Another 6.6% of Belize's population are the Garifuna. The Garifuna have their own language and culture. The Yucatec, Mopan and Kekchi are three Amerindians groups which also make up Belize's population. The Chinese, with a population of 6,000 has made distinct communities, as well as the East Indians and the Mennonites. English remains the most common language spoken followed closely by Creole, but Spanish is becoming more widely spoken. The Garifuna , Mayas and Mennonites speak their own language.

6 districts; Belize, Cayo, Corozal, Orange Walk, Stann Creek, Toledo Belize People Back to Top Many Belizeans are of mixed ancestry, most of them descendant of immigrants. Mestizos (of mixed Maya Indian and European ancestry) are the largest ethnic group, accounting for more than two-fifths of the population. English-speaking people of largely African and African-European ancestry, who are called Creoles, account for nearly one-third of the population and predominate in the central coastal regions. Mestizos predominate in the more sparsely inhabited interior, along with the Maya, who account for one-ninth of the population. Several thousand Garifuna, formerly called Black Caribs, who are descendants of the Carib Indians and Africans exiled from British colonies in the eastern Caribbean (Lesser Antilles) in the 18th century, live in communities on the south coast. People of European and East Indian ancestry are also present, as are smaller numbers of Chinese, Arabs, and others.

Southern Belize - Maya, Rainforest, Coral Reef
Toledo, the southernmost district of Belize, is 1669 square miles of rainforest, mountains, rivers, and Maya Villages. Toledans often refer to their home as "the forgotten land"-it is the least visited destination in Belize.
Early morning, Toledo rainforest, Southern Belize As the most sparsely populated and least developed region in the country, Toledo is certainly not for the ordinary tourist. However, for those with the spirit to venture off the beaten track, the natural and cultural diversity of Toledo makes a visit to a Southern Belize an unique adventure. The land is blanketed with some of the most pristine rainforest in Belize. The uplands to the Northwest, consist of the foothills of the Maya Mountains bordered by limestone outcrops - rugged, unexplored territory. The coastal lowlands consist of softer grounds, formed from the flood deposits of the many rivers draining the uplands. Towering riverine forests line the rivers and flood plains, while pine ridge savannahs and mangrove surround coastal lagoons.

Dwayne Shreve's budget travel guide to Maya ruins and culture in Southern Mexico, belize, Honduras and El Salvador, including links to local bus and air schedules.
http://www.mostlymaya.com/
Mostly Maya; An Exploration of Travel Among the Maya Mostly Maya is dedicated to understanding the culture and archaeology of the Maya. It is also geared to making budget and other travel in the Maya areas and in the ruins in Mesoamerica simpler to arrange. I look for links which are relevant to planning an inexpensive trip via the Internet, but this is best done using the additional advice of a good guide book, such as Lonely Planet or the Rough Guide. I also look for better ways to get to some of the more obscure locations. The site is a hobby and it takes no ads. I note mostly local sources, with a preference for inexpensive hotels, local day trips and other local services. I believe that it is better to deal directly with locally owned businesses where possible, because they are more likely to keep both income and profits within the local economies. I also plug places or services I like while traveling in Maya areas. You will also find pages occasionally add pages for commercial and non-commercial places that I like while traveling, which have no website. See additional information For those of you who were wondering where this website was on the 13th of April, my $18 per year web host forgot that I had renewed last January! There have probably been other times and reasons, but be tolerant. Mostly Maya will be here as long as I am and even longer.

The official language of Belize is English and most islanders speak and understand English but the main language is still Spanish. The Mayan that some of the present settlers' ancestors once spoke in no longer spoken. Islanders also speak Creole; a language or dialect derived from the English language. Due to the influence of Mayan, Creole and English languages most of the islanders speak today what is known as "kitchen Spanish" - informal Spanish that incorporates English, Mayan and Creole words. An example is "pullar". The word comes from the English root "pull" and adds a Spanish suffix "ar". The English definition is "pull". The Mexican settlers also brought with them a distinctly rich culture with traditions comprised of Spanish, Mayan and Catholic elements. Many of these traditions are still followed today. Some such of these is the observance of religious feast days and regulations such as the Lenten Season, an important aspect of Catholicism; regular attendance at Church especially at Easter and Christmas and the celebration of Sacraments. Easter Procession and Novenas (prayers) are spectacular annual events and have the participation of almost the entire local population of San Pedro Town.

Belize City - Culture B elize is located on the Eastern or Caribbean coast of Central America, bounded on the north and part of the west by Mexico and on the South and the remainder of the West by Guatemala. The inner coastal waters sheltered by the Barrier Reef (the 2nd largest in the world at 180 miles), and are dotted with over 200 islands, atolls and islets called "cayes" extending the entire length of the country. Belize covers approximately 8,866 miles of territory; its mainland is approximately 180 miles long and 68 miles wide at its widest point. Belize City On the mainland, ancient Mayan temples and monuments dating back thousands of years are an archaeologist's fantasyland. With more than 600 Maya cities, Belize is the center of the ancient Maya world and an active participant in the Mundo Maya programme. In the interior, an unspoiled world of lush tropical rain forests awaits you. Here you will find a colourful collage of animal and plant populations, as well as limestone caves, scenic rivers and Maya temples. Belize is home to the world's only jaguar preserve, and the prehistoric tapir, the howler monkey and gentle manatee co-exist in protected environments. Belize City has the only manual swing bridge in the world and is still being swung daily. The oldest Anglican Cathedral Church in Central America, St. John's Cathedral, was built in 1812 from bricks brought as ballast from European sailing ships. Over the years, Government House (now a Museum) was used as an administrative office and living quarters for the governors of Belize. This was built in the early 1800 with a combination of Caribbean Vernacular and English Urban architecture. The Lighthouse monument at Fort George Point towers over the harbour entrance. This was built from money donated to the country by Belize's greatest benefactor - Baron Bliss, the 5th baron of Portugal. At his request, he was entombed in front of the lighthouse which he designed himself prior to his death.
