81. The Secret History Of French Fries
The fry culture in belgium is similar to that of Holland—fries are everywhere, the thick slabs of potatoes are freshly fried and served in paper cones, and

mais non , I have never tasted a fry a la Francaise Whatever the case, you can be certain that if you are traveling in the Netherlands, you will come upon the tantalizing scent of frying potatoes wafting around a corner and forcing you to follow your nose to its source. The fries you order there will be the thick, steak fry variety, and they'll be served to you in a paper cone and topped with a dollop of creamy mayonnaise (a distant relative of our globby mayo). Fries are so commonly served this way that to order them one simply asks for patat "met", or "with." The fry stand will also have a menu of other toppings, including sate sauce, a chunky peanut sauce that the Dutch discovered during their colonization of Indonesia and promptly incorporated into their fry culture. The Dutch, however, cannot take responsibility for inventing the fry. Neither can the French. That honor goes to the Belgians wide variety of specialized fries shops , called, in Belgium "frietkots" or "fritures". These range from small stands, to sheds, busses and caravans, to shacks or quaint chalets. It is only in the United States that the nomenclature of fried potatoes insinuates a French connection. In England they are called "chips," in France "pommes frites" (which means, literally, "fried apples"), and in Belgium and Holland "patat" (not the word for potato, which is "aardappel"). The French fry has little to do with France other than the fact that it's popularity spread to that country as quickly as it did to others. In fact, the French, like most of Europe, eyed the potato with suspicion until the last century or two.

The History of East Belgium
(Text by Leonhard Schifflers) After Centuries of being bounced around, almost the entire population of the 9 German-speaking communes in the east of the country finally feels at home in Belgium, not as Flemings, not as Walloons, but as German-speaking Belgians.
This is the result of the structural changes brought about during a period of three decades, starting in the sixties, by means of which it was hoped that the "Belgian problem" could once and for all be resolved.
This "Belgian problem" is an old one, residing in the coexistence of two Communities, the French-speaking and the Dutch-speaking, within the same national territory. It was hoped at first that the "language quarrels" could be resolved by means of language legislation. A series of language laws came into existence in the sixties which laid the basis for modern Belgium:
the abolishing of the linguistic headcount (1961), the establishing of linguistic frontiers (1962), the regulation of language use in administrative matters (1963) and the regulation of language use in education (1963).

ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT
Thayer Watkins The Economic History of Belgium After Great Britain, the first area of Europe to industrialize was that which became, in 1830, Belgium. Prior to the French Revolution this area was part of the Austrian Habsburg Empire. With the French Revolution it was absorbed by the French Republic and continued to be controlled by France under Napoleon. With the defeat of Napoleon in 1814 the area of the present Belgium was part of the United Netherlands. In 1830 Belgium was created as a separate nation. The area of Belgium, then called Flanders, had from the Middle Ages been economically important in Europe. Antwerp and Bruges were successors of the city-states of northern Italy as the loci of prosperity and commerce. This occured even though Flanders was ruled oppressively from outside, first from Spain and later from Austria. Flanders/Belgium had plentiful deposits of bituminous coal and metal ores. In particular it had iron ore in proximity to coal for steel production. In addition to its natural resources Flanders/Belgium was strategically located with respect to the major market areas of Europe. It had easy access to the capital and technology markets of Great Britain and the consumer markets of France. The entrepreneurs who established industries in Flanders/Belgium came from a variety of places of northwestern Europe, but the family business established by William Cockerill from Leeds, England was especially important. The Cockerill family first began manufacturing machinery for the spinning industry and later started manufacturing steam engines.

The Rise and Fall of the Duchy of Brabant
Brabant derived its name from the Carolingian pagus by the same name, between the rivers Schelde ( Scheldt ) and Dijle. It got under the rule of the Counts of Leuven ( Louvain ), who enlarged their domain considerably between the 10th and 12th centuries, with the county of Ukkel-Brussel ( Uccle-Brussels ), the abbeys of Nijvel and Gembloers, and the domains of Antwerpen and Orthen, later 's-Hertogenbosch ( Bois-le-Duc ). From about 1100 AD onwards, they called themselves Dukes of Brabant.
Bruges-Cologne ). Apart from that also their port Antwerpen played an important role in world trade.
The relationship between the Duke and its subjects was arranged by ducal charter ( de Blijde Inkomst ), established as early as 1312 and abolished in 1794 as a result of the French rule.
In 1406 Duchess Johanna of Brabant, was succeeded by Antoon of Burgundy. The first university in the Netherlands, in Leuven, was founded in 1425 by the latter's son, Jan IV of Brabant. After his death (1427) and that of Antoon's other son, Fillips of St.-Pol (1430), leaving the house of Brabant without heirs, the Duchy was ruled by Fillips the Good of Burgundy. The same year Fillips founded the Gulden Vlies knighthood ( Golden Fleece
After the marriage between Fillips' granddaughter Maria of Burgundy and Maximilian of Austria (1477) Brabant came under Habsburg rule. During the Burgundy and later Habsburg rule of the Netherlands, Brabant took the lead over Flanders, that had been the leading land for centuries.

Although generally flat, the terrain becomes increasingly hilly and forested in the southeast (Ardennes) region. Climate is cool, temperate, and rainy; summer temperatures average 77°F, winters average 45°F. Annual extremes (rarely attained) are 10°F and 100°F. Geographically and culturally, Belgium is at the crossroads of Europe, and during the past 2,000 years has witnessed a constant ebb and flow of different races and cultures. Consequently, Belgium is one of Europe's true melting pots with Celtic, Roman, Germanic, French, Dutch, Spanish, and Austrian cultures having made an imprint. Belgium is divided ethnically into the Dutch-speaking Flemings and French-speaking Walloons, the 70,000 residents of the eastern German cantons, and the bilingual capital of Brussels. The population density is the second highest in Europe, after the Netherlands.

When Belgium was drawn to face the Czech Republic in the final European qualifying playoff, not a lot of people expected it to make the finals. But Robert Waseige's side showed the kind of grit needed to win big ties and qualified for the World Cup for the sixth straight time. The question now is will this team be able to put together a good run in Asia, or will they suffer from the same problems that led to an early elimination at Euro 2000. As the countdown to the 2002 World Cup in South Korea and Japan continues, CNNSI.com's Pedro Pinto will take a close look at all of the nations that will contend for football's greatest prize. Pinto is an anchor on World Sport, the international sports show that airs live on CNN/Sports Illustrated and CNN International. Belgium is the first nation ever to actually qualify for six consecutive World Cups (discounting hosts and defending champions). That says a lot about the stability of its squad over the last three decades. Again, the Belgians enter the finals with the tag of "outsiders," but again they have the kind of experience needed to make it into the knockout stages.

    http://www.eurohistory.com/main.htm
W elcome to the European Royal History Web site! We are dedicated to the distribution and publication of articles and materials on Europe's royal families. We are taking advantage of the endless opportunities allowed to us by the internet to disseminate our knowledge on royalty and royalty-related topics. This web site is intended to be an historian's paradise. As supporters of monarchy, the creators of www.eurohistory.com felt frustrated by not being able to obtain most of the information we wanted on many of Europe's royal families. We were tired with excessive coverage of some royals, and not enough of others. This frustration convinced us that there was a need, a demand in fact, for a web site dedicated exclusively to the history of Royal Europe. The motive behind this web site is, therefore, the publication of articles that combines biographical information on many European royals with their role in major political events of the last two centuries. History teaches us that economics and politics play an overwhelming role in shaping the present and future. That is not in question. Yet we feel that history cannot have been written without the presence of certain people and their role in shaping events. As there are endless sources of information dedicated to the English royal family, The European Royal History Web Page is going to focus mainly on Europe's continental royals. We feel a deep attraction to the royal dynasties of Romanov, Habsburg, Hohenzollern, Wittelsbach, Bourbon and Saxe-Coburg-Gotha. This is not to sat that other, less researched dynasties, will not be covered in the future. We do encourage visitors/readers of this web page to send us suggestions about topics you would like us to cover.
