http://www.flight100.org/history/bel.html
BELGIUM An increasing number of attempts to fly with vehicles heavier than air took place in Belgium at the end of last century. The most famous was by Vincent De Groof, who launched his flying machine from a balloon piloted by an English pilot. He survived a first jump of 100 meters, but a second experiment in 1874 ended in a deadly accident. The first flight in Belgium took place in November 1908 with an airplane built by "les freres Voisin" and powered by a Belgian Vivinus 100-horsepower motor. The plane was piloted by Baron Pierre de Caters. He also was the first pilot to fly in Africa (December 1909) and India (December 1910). De Caters competed with Louis Bleriot at an air meeting in Frankfurt in 1909 and was the first to receive a Belgian pilot licence in December of that same year. The first Belgian woman to fly a plane was Helene Dutrieu, who, after little training, flew a "La Demoiselle." In spite of a near fatal landing, she began more thorough training and received the 27th Belgian pilot licence. In 1911 she won the "Coup du Roi" in Florence after competing with 14 male pilots. She also achieved several altitude and distance records in New York. The period before World War I saw the creation of a large number of small airfields and pilot schools in the country. The driving force for the further development was the large potential of air transport in Congo. From 1911 on, attempts were made to use a "Farman" with a 50-horsepower motor for local transport near the Equator, but the attempts were unsuccessful due to the difficult climate. A special contest held in 1912 to find the best hydro-aeroplane for tropical applications was won by a French pilot on an aeroplane called "Borel."

Round Table History
The first Round Table was formed in Norwich, England in 1927. The founder, Louis Marchesi, was a young member of Norwich Rotary Club who felt a need existed for a club where the young business men of the town could gather on a regular basis. At their meetings they could exchange ideas, learn from the experiences of their colleagues and play a collective part in the civic life of Norwich. Within a year of inception the membership of this Round Table had grown to 85 and interest was being shown in establishing Round Tables elsewhere. From a very early stage it was agreed that Round Table would be a non-religious, non-political club and this has continued to this day. A second Round Table was established in Portsmouth and subsequent growth was rapid, with 125 Tables and a membership of 4,600 by the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. Round Table proved it had international appeal with the first overseas Table formed in Copenhagen in 1936. During the war years Round Table in Denmark continued to expand although in the British Isles activity was restricted and was in the nature of a 'holding operation'. After 1945 the pattern of growth was rapidly re-established with Tables being 'chartered' all over the UK. . Round Table now flourishes in the majority of European countries, throughout Africa, the Middle East, India, Hong Kong, New Zealand and America. In fact Round Table is represented in every continent of the World.

Expatriates site The web site of the Cantillon Brewery, producers of the original Brussels Lambic and Gueuze beer The History of Lace Brussels is more than a 1000 years old . Today the name Brussels stands for an agglomeration of 19 communes forming one of the three Regions of the federal Belgian state; the capital of the Kingdom of Belgium; the headquarters of the French and Flemish Communities. Brussels also has an important international vocation : as the European capital the city is home to the European Commission and to the Council of ministers of the European Union (EU). Brussels is the bilingual capital of Belgium . This means that both French and Dutch are the official languages of the city. Street names and traffic sings are always in these two languages. Furthermore, it is a cosmopolitan city where many different cultures live together and where different languages can be heard on each street. This liveliness and international flair is, of course, intimately related to its role as a crossroads for all of Europe. The same variety and contrast can also be found in the different architectural styles that can be found in Brussels, the former capital of the medieval Duchy of Brabant. Gothic cathedrals and churches are next to - and sometimes in stark contrast with - gracious classical facades like the buildings around the Royal Square (Place Royale - Koningsplein), or beautiful art nouveau and art deco houses.

(click on picture) experts on the good Belgian life The origin of lace is difficult to locate in both time and place . Some authors assume that the manufacturing of lace started during Ancient Rome, based on the discovery of small bone cylinders in the shape of bobbins. The Middle-Ages is a period of history where little is known about the manufacture of lace. For firm evidence we have to look back to the fifteenth century when Charles the Fifth decreed that lace making was to be taught in the schools and convents of the Belgian provinces. During this period of renaissance and enlightenment, the making of lace was firmly based within the domain of fashion. To be precise, it was designed to replace embroidery in a manner that could with ease transform dresses to follow different styles of fashion. Unlike embroidery, lace could be unsewn from one material to be replaced on another. Since these earlier times, many styles and techniques of lacemaking have been developed, almost all of them in the Belgian provinces, which thus deserve to be named the cradle of lace. Today, two main techniques are practiced in the Flemish provinces of Belgium. The first, a needle lace, is still manufactured in in the region of Aalst. It is called Renaissance or Brussels lace because it is mostly sold in Brussels. The second type, the Bobbin Lace, is a speciality of Bruges, a magnificent city located in the west of Belgium. This is a very expensive type of lace to make and is therefore no longer manufactured for commercial purposes.

Belgian public television broadcaster reconditions rare material documenting Belgium's colonial past using Archangel Ph.C VRT retains more than 50 years of film archive in its vaults, including priceless footage from Belgium's colonial past as well as news footage from Belgium and surrounding countries. Unfortunately, most of this material exhibits all of the artifacts you would expect from old film - noise, dirt, scratches - coupled with unsteadiness caused by the limitations of the camera tolerances of the time. "It was essential to make sure that nothing is lost or changed. Archangel allows us to make a very precise restoration so the picture ends up being clearer and cleaner, but it is still the same image," said VRT manager Patrick Van Der Borgh. VRT's is the first application in a film-only restoration environment. The film archive is being transferred to digital Betacam tape after being restored via Archangel.

Early History
Much of Jewish settlement in Europe began with the Roman conquests. Jews followed the path of the Roman legions to Belgium in the years 53-57 CE. Written evidence, however, only dates back to the 13th century. Hebrew tombstones and street names like "rue des Juifs" have been traced to 1255. Other sources mention Jews as early as 1200 in the Brabant province. Anti-Jewish measures can also be traced back to the 13th century. In his 1261 will, Duke Henry III ordered all Jews and usurers to be expelled from the Brabant province. At about the same time, theologian Thomas Aquinas suggested the Jews be taxed and forced to perform manual labor to prevent them from becoming wealthy as usurers. Although these measures did not adversely affect the Jewish population in Belgium, the 1309 crusade did. Jews who refused baptism were massacred.

Chiryaku Dojo History Grandmaster Tanemura Shoto Sensei gave the name
Chiryaku Dojo to Chief Dojo-Cho Filip Poffé during the 4th
European Tai-Kai (April 1996).
The Dojo was originally founded on 29 May 1988
in the city of Tienen and was headed by Danny Govaerts. The first two students were Filip Poffé and Koen Mertens.
The Dojo where everything started called "Budo Center Tienen".
Hereafter we trained in almost every sports-center in the area of Tienen,
Hoegaarden and Glabbeek. Since the beginning a lot of people
came to our Dojo but only one student remained after all these years.
It is Filip Poffé who officially became Chief Dojo-Cho since 1993. Our motto is, like Grandmaster Tanemura Shoto Sensei once said :
" One must always have True Spirit ! True Spirit never dies and lies in the heart ... ". Chiryaku means Earth-strategy and can be symbolised with a globe It stands for the fundamental, basic principles where everything in Ninpo is built on. • Origins Under Charles of Lorraine , Governor General of the Austrian Netherlands, the plenipotentiary, Count Charles de Cobenzl, a supporter of the Enlightenment, fostered the idea of encouraging the research and publication of the country's principal chronicles.
The creation, according to Nelis's ideas, of a special Commission with the task of publishing previously unpublished chronicles which were of interest to national history. The initiative covered the southern part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. In line with tradition 22nd July : Following a proposal made by Charles Rogier, Minister of the Interior, Leopold I, the Belgian king, signed the royal decree which founded a "Commission whose task is to research and update previously unpublished Belgian chronicles". The abbreviated title, "Royal Historical Commission", was the name which was to prevail afterwards. The Institution was free to act in scientific matters but its members were to be appointed by the king.
The Presidency was conferred on Baron Etienne-Constantin de Gerlache who was appointed Head of the National Congress in February 1831.

    The History of the Olympics:
1920 - Antwerp, Belgium The 1920 Olympic Games followed closely the ending of World War I . The world had seen much bloodshed. Should the aggressors of the war be invited to the Olympic Games? The Olympic ideals stated that all countries should be allowed entrance into the Games. Though Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Turkey, and Hungary were not forbidden to come, they were also not sent an invitation by the Organizing Committee. These countries were again not invited to the 1924 Olympic Games . In addition, the newly formed Soviet Union decided not to attend. (Athletes from the Soviet Union did not reappear at the Olympics until Since the war had ravaged throughout Europe, funding and materials for the Games was difficult to acquire. When the athletes arrived in Antwerp, construction had not been completed. Besides the stadium being unfinished, the athletes were housed in cramped quarters and slept on folding cots.
