At 2100 on the night of 17 December 1944, Col. Tucker was summoned to 82nd Airborne Division Headquarters. Shortly after his return to the regiment, men of the 504 knew that they'd "had it". The enemy had broken through into Belgium and Luxembourg with a powerful thrust launched south of Aachen. Immediately after being alerted, personnel of the 504 went into a frenzy of packing and preparation for combat. "A" and "B" bags were packed and stored, combat shortages filled, ammunition and rations drawn. Dawn of the 18th found the regiment a little short on sleep, but in every other sense, fully equipped and ready for combat. Big trailer-trucks had roared into the area during the night and were waiting to take the paratroopers to the scene of the breakthrough; most men were grouchy and in no mood to go back into action; they had just begun to relax from the Holland mission. However, with remarks such as, "Well, I'd rather go in these things than in a damn C-47", and "Why aren't they making us walk - it's only 200 miles", they resigned themselves to their fate. Thirteen hours after leaving Sissone, the convoy unsnarled itself from a traffic jam and unloaded at Werbomont, Belgium. On the way, the destination had been changed from Bastogne to Werbomont - a point more seriously threatened.

Kroonenberg, Amsterdam, The Netherlands The first Scout Troop was founded In Brussels, Capital City of Belgium, in 1909. Englishman Harold Parfitt founded the first Scout Troop for British boys, belonging to the British colony in that city. Belgians observing the troop's activities also took an interest in Scouting and soon Belgium Scouting began. Boy Scouts of Belgium (BSB) was founded on December 23, 1910. The first all-Belgium troop was founded in Brussels. They used the British badges, rules and uniforms. This association was open to all boys. As early as 1911 the B.S.B. founded a Girl Guide or Girl Scout troop but World War II and the German occupation hampered their development, so the founding of G.G.B. was not until December 17, 1919. Used British badges, rules and uniforms. Belgium was again occupied by the Germans during World War II (1940-1944). Scouting was banned by the Nazi’s. Scouting resumed after the liberation in the spring of 1944. B.S.B. and G.G.B. merged into one organization in July 1945. Each section remained separate, that is, there were no mixed groups until well into the 1980's. The Sea Scouts of Belgium (SSB), was founded in April 1914. SSB is an open movement concentrating on Sea Scouting only and founded along the North Sea Coast in the Dutch (Flemish) speaking part of Belgium only. SSB did not have any connection with BSB. They also used British badges, uniforms and rules.

Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.

The Beginnings of Belgium
Belgium takes its name from the Belgae, a people of ancient Gaul . The Roman province of Belgica was much larger than modern Belgium. There the Franks first appeared in the 3d cent. A.D. The Carolingian dynasty had its roots at Herstal , in Belgium. After the divisions (9th cent.) of Charlemagne's empire, Belgium became part of Lotharingia and later of the duchy of Lower Lorraine, which occupied all but the western part of the Low Countries In the 12th cent., Lower Lorraine disintegrated; the duchies of Brabant (see Brabant, duchy of ) and Luxembourg Flanders and Hainaut constitute the medieval history of Belgium. The salient development was the rise of the cities (e.g., Ghent, Bruges, and Ypres) to virtual independence and economic prosperity through their wool industry and trade. In the 15th cent., all of present Belgium passed to the dukes of Burgundy , who strove to curtail local liberties. Simultaneously the wool industry declined, mainly because of English competition. With the death (1482) of Mary of Burgundy a period of foreign domination began (see Netherlands, Austrian and Spanish

27. Sysmex Belgium History
2004 Sysmex Molis has become a 100% subsidiary of the Sysmex Corporation and changed accordingly its company name to Sysmex Belgium SA as of January 1st, 2004.
http://www.sysmex.be/group/contenu12.html
The first two years were entirely devoted to the development of MOLIS (Modular Open Laboratory Information System). The first installation took place in spring 1989 in a private laboratory in Munich (D). After this first installation the commercialisation of the specialized product was so successful that now, MOLIS is installed in more than 165 medical laboratories all over the world. Thanks to its modular structure, the software fits for big and medium sized labs as well as for small specialized labs. It can be installed in public or university hospitals but also in private laboratories and clinics. For example, MOLIS has been installed in a German lab that treats about 11000 patients, 22.000 blood or urine samples, prints 10.000 letters and 6.000 bills per day. In 1997, the company decided to identify itself more closely with the product and changed its name into Molis. The works for the new building fall together with a project for the growth of the company, reinforced by the ISO 9001 certification that was obtained in December 2000. The certification of the quality management system allows to Sysmex Molis to establish a transparent structure for its activities and organisation. Sysmex Molis is oriented towards the continuous research of absolute customer satisfaction through an excellent product and a high quality service. On the other hand, the new organisation enables the company to a worldwide expansion. Thanks to the use of the latest technological tools, MOLIS can pretend today being a leader in Laboratory Information Systems (LIS). The extraordinary performance of the system has ensured its position on the European market (Benelux, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, France, United Kingdom). In the USA the MOLIS package is already installed in a medical laboratory in Texas and in the state of New York. More installations will follow for a mutli-site lab corporation installed in seven different states from the East to the West Coast. The MOLIS software package is present in Japan and in a big private New Zealand laboratory.

The people he encountered there were the Belgae , one of the various Celtic tribes of early Gaul, and the Romans dubbed their new province Gallia Belgica . In the fourth century AD, with Rome in decline, control of Gaul was ceded to the Franks, a Germanic tribe that the weakened empire employed as mercenaries. As the Franks flourished, they decided to dispense with their Roman employers. By 431, they had established an independent dynasty, the Merovingian , with its capital at Tournai . Soon after, under Clovis I (c.466-511), the Merovingians succeeded in pummeling the last of the Romans in Gaul. They held large parts of present day France and Belgium as well as southwestern Germany. Clovis also adopted Christianity, thus gaining the support of the Church. After Clovis' death the Merovingian kingdom began to fragment, and the Frankish lands did not come together under single rule again until the reign of Pepin III (the Short) in 751. Pepin deposed the last of the Merovingians and founded the Carolingian dynasty , which is named after his son Charlemagne.

A Little Background Info The Kingdom of Belgium is a democracy with a constitutional monarch. The current king, Albert II, does not govern. In fact, according to the constitution, the king can't take any official action without the approval of a minister, and his ministers are held accountable for his actions! In Belgium the king is traditionally considered a moral leader. Belgium has a well-educated public and a very high quality of life. There is almost no illiteracy, and all citizens over the age of 18 are required to vote. The leaders of the four major religions Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism and Islam are paid by the state. About three-quarters of the people are Catholic. The country encompasses 11,784 square miles and is about the size of the American state of Maryland, but its coastline stretches only forty miles. It is bordered by the North Sea, the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. Belgium has a moderate climate, and is rarely very hot or cold. There are about 10 million people in Belgium. In the north part of the country, Flanders, Dutch or Flemish is spoken. In the south, Wallonia, the predominant language is French. The capital, Brussels, is in the Flemish part of the country but is predominantly French-speaking. About 10 percent of the population speaks German. Most Belgians speak English, too. There are many immigrants from North Africa and the Mediterranean in Brussels.

Charlemagne succeeded his father in 768 and ruled for almost a half century, creating during that time an empire that covered nearly all of continental Europe, with the exception of Spain and Scandinavia. In 800, Pope Leo III crowned him Emperor of the West. Although Charlemagne spent much of his reign conquering and subduing various parts of Europe, he also did much to foster commerce and the arts. The beginnings of organized trade along Belgium's rivers was one result of his reign, as was the preservation of classical learning and the arts.

http://www.geographia.com/belgium/bxhis02.htm
Clickable Timeline Medieval Belgium T his division was soon to have great consequences for the development of Belgium's nascent cities. In the northwestern part of Belgium, which nominally belonged to the young kingdom of France, there arose the powerful Counts of Flanders . The first of these was Baldwin Iron Arm , who amply demonstrated his independence from the French by carrying off and marrying one of the daughters of Charles the Bold . Baldwin also began the process of creating fortified towns in Flanders in order to curtail the depredations of the Norsemen. The first of these was Ghent (c.867), and the process was continued by Baldwin's heir (Baldwin II) with the fortification of Bruges and Ypres. The southeastern part of today's Belgium eventually became part of the Duchy of Lower Lotharingia or Lorraine, under the German kings. In 977, Charles, Duke of Lorraine, built the fortress on the Senne River that was the foundation of Brussels . For the most part, however, the southeastern portion of today's Belgium became split into a number of minor spheres of power, one of which was the prince-bishoprie of Liege At the outset of the new millennium, Belgium consisted of the cities of Flanders, unified under their strong Counts, and the less unified cities to the south and east of the Scheldt. As the Norse raids fell off and Europe's major kingdoms gradually stabilized, trade began to grow by leaps and bounds. For Flanders in particular, this was the beginning of a golden age. By importing wool from England and weaving it into fine cloth for sale on the continent, the Flemish cities became exceedingly wealthy, populous, and powerful. By 1300, Ghent, Bruges, and Ypres, in particular, had gained virtual autonomy from aristocratic rule, developing the proud civic culture that still distinguishes them today.

Belgium If Belgium's spotlight on the European stage is a little dim, it's only because its people are rarely boastful. This slow-burning country has more history, art, food and architecture packed into its tiny self than many of its bigger, louder neighbours. A rich and bubbling vat of beer, chocolate, oil paint and bureaucrats, Belgium gives off the heady pong of the bourgeoisie. But stir the pot a little and you'll find an 'artificial state' roughly made up of two parts Germanic Flemings to one part Celtic-Latin Walloons. Divided by pride first and language second, the country's binding agents are a pervasive sense of family, and an indomitable entrepreneurial spirit. Visitors, lulled by the locals' friendliness, will probably not even notice the tensions that spark across the Linguistic Divide. Full country name: Kingdom of Belgium Area: 30,510 sq km Population: 10.3 million Capital City: Brussels (pop: 970,000) People: 55% Flemish, 33% Walloons (French Latin) and about 10% foreigners. Free Towns and the Age of Feudalism
Belgium's history begins with Roman invasion, several decades before the birth of Christ. Indeed, Julius Caesar records that the Belgae , a conglomeration of Gallo-Celtic tribes, fought with great valour against his forces in 58 bc. Ultimately the Belgae lost, however, and Romans remained in the region for almost 500 years, establishing urban living, building roads and developing trade. Following the collapse of the Western Roman Empire, the power vacuum was filled by the Franks, a loose confederation of Germanic tribes, who did much to spread Christianity throughout western Europe. During the reign of Charlemagne, born in Li¨ge in 742 and King of the Franks from 768, Belgium became the focal point of European events. Before his reign, invasions from the Barbarian north and Muslim south were eroding Frankish power, but Charlemagne quickly set about rectifying the situation. He subdued the Saxons in northeast Europe and repelled the Lombards in northern Italy. A Spanish March was established south of the Pyrenees "to keep the infidel at bay", while an Eastern March in the Danube basin acted as a buttress against tribes from the east.
