Belgium train death toll rises
Both drivers died in the head-on crash PECROT, Belgium At least eight people have died after two trains collided in Belgium. Dozens of others were injured in Tuesday's accident and local news reports said up to 12 people could have died in the crash. A spokeswoman for the SNCB-NMBS rail company said the two trains were travelling on the same track and collided head-on around 30 kilometres (20 miles) east of Brussels. One train was a passenger train carrying schoolchildren and rush hour commuters. The other was an empty passenger train which had possibly broken down. Both drivers and a ticket collector were among the dead. AUDIO CNN's Patricia Kelly in Pecrot: A huge ball of flame AIFF or WAV sound The collision happened near the village of Pecrot on the line between the university towns of Leuven and Louvain-la-Neuve, SNCB-NMBS spokeswoman Leen Uyterhoeven said. She said the line had two tracks but the driver of the empty train went down the wrong one.

St. George's Anglican Church, Knokke
St. George's serves the English speaking community in this popular sea resort on the Belgian coast.
This small church was founded by the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (now USPG ) when the English residents in Knokke were numerous. Since the second world war their number has dwindled. The church is part of the Diocese in Europe.
Prior to 1911, Church of England services were held on the sand dunes, and in a chapel which was to become the office of the Centrales Electriques des Flandres et du Brabant. Those were the days when the British made a predominant contribution to the popularity of Knokke, both as a place for holidays, and as an attractive retirement proposition for those retiring from the Army and the Colonial service. In the '20's the popularity of St. George's was such that it was often necessary to duplicate the services in order to accommodate the congregations. In 1926 fears were expressed about the safety of the fabric, and the patrons, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, sent over Mr. E. E. Lofting, Architect-Surveyor in charge of Westminster Abbey, to investigate. Following his recommendations a gallery was constructed to strengthen the fabric, and the tower was added to give access thereto. It remained to add the Chancel and Vestry, and by 1928 the church had taken on its present appearance.

188. Weekend In Belgium
Detailed photojournal of a spring weekend in Brussels, belgium.
http://www.valerieandjoe.com/belgium/index.htm
"Our guidebook suggested a Sunday market at the Gare du Midi and that's where we started. THIS was a market. It was endless. Fresh fruits, vegetables, cheeses, meat, olives (oh, the smell, my mouth watered), pastries, plants, flowers, clothes, purses, lace, material, toothpaste, knick knacks. We could have wandered for hours without repeating an aisle. After we had our fill of market, we find a pommes frites place in the station and indulge in fries with mayonnaise. One sauce is curry and we use the fries as a scoop. American ketchup has nothing on this..." - from Our Journal of a Spring Weekend in Belgium

189. CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Jacques Bonfrere
Biblical scholar, born at Dinant, belgium, 12 April, 1573; died at Tournai, 9 May, 1642.

Biblical scholar, born at Dinant, Belgium, 12 April, 1573; died at Tournai, 9 May, 1642. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1592. After having taught rhetoric, philosophy, and theology, he devoted himself to the Sacred Scriptures. He was long a professor of Scripture and Hebrew at Douai De modo quo Deus cum hisce Scriptoribus hagiographis habuit ). The views he sets forth here do not in all respects agree with the teachings of modern theologians. He holds, for instance, that approval of a writing by God , subsequent to its composition, would suffice to make it canonical. In point of fact, though, he assures us, no book of the Bible was so composed. He then expresses the opinion that when writing on what they knew without revelation, the sacred authors only had the assistance necessary to preserve them from error. He does not make a clear distinction between inspiration and revelation. (See Pesch, De Inspiratione," Nos. 323 and 324). The "Praeloquia" were published along with a commentary on the Pentateuch in a volume entitled: "Pentateuchis Mosis commentario illustatis, praemissis praeloquiis perutilibus (fol., Antwerp, 1625). This was followed by his commentary on Josue, Judges, and Ruth, to which he added a treatise on sacred geography, composed by Eusebius and translated by St. Jerome: Josue, Judices et Ruth commentario illustarti. Accessit Onomasticon" (fol. Paris, 1631). Bonfrere had undertaken to explain the Books of Kings before his work on the Pentateuch, he tells us in his preface to the latter; but he had felt the need of going back to the beginning of things. His "Libri Regnum et Paralipomenon commentariis illustrati," was given to the press in Tournai, in 1643, after his death. But the printing-house was burned, and the work did not appear. Biographers have no reference even to the manuscripts. The learned professor is said to have left commentaries on nearly all the other books of the Bible. Bonfrere's explanation of the text of scripture shows a very good knowledge of Hebrew, and pays special attention to the places mentioned. His erudition is extensive for his time. The soberness and judiciousness of his comments are generally admired.

Rivaldo and Ronaldo sink Belgium
Joy and relief for scorer Rivaldo (left), Ronaldinho and Edmilson KOBE, Japan (CNN) Rivaldo and Ronaldo maintained their goal-a-game records to book Brazil's place in the World Cup quarterfinal with a 2-0 win over battling Belgium. Brazil will play England in Friday's quarterfinal but they were given a scare by hard-working Belgium who rarely allowed them to indulge in their free-flowing football and often had their defence at full-stretch. The underdogs had the enjoyed the better of the second half until the 67th minute when Rivaldo chested down the ball and swivelled to fire into the top corner with a slight deflection off a defender.
