Belgium
History
Belgium's big-gun neighbours France, Germany and England (which faces it across the North Sea) long favoured this little nation as a nice spot to kill each other. Conquered by German tribes, Christianised by the 7th century and carved up during the Frankish Empire in 1100, much of Belgium enjoyed a golden age of prosperity and artistry under the French Duke of Burgundy during the 14th century. This was a boom time for the cloth-trading Flemish towns of Ypres, Bruges and Ghent. With the demise of Bruges due to British competition and a silted river, Antwerp soon became the greatest port in Europe. The golden age began to tarnish in the mid-15th century when the Low Countries (present-day Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg) were inherited by Spain, igniting a long battle against Catholic Spanish rule. The fanatically Catholic Philip II of Spain sent in the Inquisition to enforce Catholicism. Thousands were imprisoned or executed before full-scale war erupted in 1568. The Revolt of the Netherlands lasted 80 years and in the end Holland and its allied provinces booted out the Spaniards. Belgium and Luxembourg stayed under Spanish rule. Napolean's defeat at the Battle of Waterloo near Brussels led to the creation, in 1814, of the United Kingdom of the Netherlands, melding Belgium and Luxembuorg into the Netherlands. But the Catholic Belgians revolted, winning independence in 1830. Stuck between a rock and a hard place (aka France and Germany), Belgium managed to retain its neutrality throughout the century, at the end of which Flemish nationalism flowered. Meanwhile, King Leopold II began to amass a fortune for himself (and, indirectly, for his subjects) by his genocidal exploitation of his holdings in the African Congo.

    History
    The Beginnings of Belgium
Belgium takes its name from the Belgae, a people of ancient Gaul . The Roman province of Belgica was much larger than modern Belgium. There the Franks first appeared in the 3d cent. A.D. The Carolingian dynasty had its roots at Herstal , in Belgium. After the divisions (9th cent.) of Charlemagne's empire, Belgium became part of Lotharingia and later of the duchy of Lower Lorraine, which occupied all but the western part of the Low Countries In the 12th cent., Lower Lorraine disintegrated; the duchies of Brabant (see Brabant, duchy of ) and Luxembourg Flanders and Hainaut constitute the medieval history of Belgium. The salient development was the rise of the cities (e.g., Ghent, Bruges, and Ypres) to virtual independence and economic prosperity through their wool industry and trade. In the 15th cent., all of present Belgium passed to the dukes of Burgundy , who strove to curtail local liberties. Simultaneously the wool industry declined, mainly because of English competition.

History
The kingdom of Belgium is surrounded by
the Netherlands, France, Germany and Luxembourg,
and across the Channel Great Britain.
Geographically, politically, culturally and economically,
Belgium can be called the heart of Europe. In Belgium there are 3 languages spoken.
In the North of Belgium you will find
Flemmish speaking Belgians.
In the South French speaking Belgians.
In Brussels both Flemmish and French are spoken,
and a very small percentage in the East of Belgium is German speaking. Ancient Celts Julius Caesar extended in the beginning of 57BC Rome into the region of Europe, that is now Belgium. Here he met the Belgae, which were a Celtic tribe of early Gaul. The Romans named gave their new province the name "Gallia Belgica". Rome lost power in the 4th century AD, and Gaul was given in hands of the Franks, who were a Germanic tribe. The Franks flourished and around 431 they built up an independent dynasty, named the Merovingian, with Tournai as their capital. Clovis I (466-511) pummeled the last Romans in Gaul.

    Before independence (1815-1830)
by French First Empire , the Vienna Congress decided to unify Belgium and Holland under William I's rule. The new kingdom of the Netherlands inherited more than 200 vessels abandoned by France in the ports of Den Helder and Antwerp . Since those vessels were old, the king decided to start a reconstruction program and it took 15 years to build 34 new vessels. Holland and Belgium shared the costs. These warships as well as the merchant navy hoisted the horizontally divided red-white-blue ensign, already known in the XVIth century.

    • Roman Period ( 57 B.C. to 455 A.D) :
Between 57 and 50 B.C. Julius Cesar conquered the northern part of Gaul, the area lying roughly in the basins of the Scheldt and the Meuse. The land was inhabited then by Gallo-Celtic tribes, including the BELGAE. Between 15 B.C. and the fifth century it was under Roman occupation as Gallia Belgica until Rome weakened and the Francs began to penetrate the region.
    • Frankish Empire (455-843) :
As a result of the advance of the Franks, a Germanic people, in the 5th century, the Flemings prevailed in the north (an area stretching from the lower Scheldt to the Ardennes) , separating them from the WALA (Walloons or Romanized Celts), whose Latin influence underlies the French language of the region. And so, the ethnic and linguistic frontiers of today had their beginning. Upon Charlemagne's death, the area later known as Belgium, was among the first objectives of invaders and remained a battlefield for hundreds of years.

    19. Belgium Doesn't Exist!
belgium history was designed with just enough territorial skirmishes, political struggles, and colonialism to make it blend in with the rest of Europe.
    http://zapatopi.net/belgium.html
    "BELGIUM DOESN'T EXIST!"
or "Land of Sprouts and Chocolate, I Think Not."
(or " " for our imaginary friends)
by Lyle Zapato For too long we have been told lies.
Postal Propaganda: Belgian "Super-man" squints hard to see his non-existant country. No such luck, Baudy. The existence of the supposed European country of Belgium has been taken as gospel for years by members of the Liberati. It has long been held up as a shining example of Liberal philosophies in action. However, now is the time the truth be known. Belgium doesn't exist. Belgium is, and has always been, a leftist ruse; a device applied to propagate the Liberal agenda throughout the world . Hijacking a real country for this use would be difficult at best; the people living there wouldn't stand for it (i.e. the fall of communism.) Thus the idea to invent an imaginary country, insert it into the global consciousness through the perversion of history, and use it as a tool of manipulation was born.
A typical Belgian building... or so we're told. Using the assumed voice of a nation, the Elite Left seeks to insinuate itself into world discussions, quietly changing the topic of conversations with a casual remark here, a whisper there. Need proof? The fictitious country was a founding member of the European Community (which is, as you should be aware, step one in the march to the One World Government,) most of who's governing institutions are supposedly based in Brussels. As are the headquarters of the Customs Cooperations Council (an Orwellian name if I ever heard one,) and other international bodies, unimportant and seemingly harmless now, that will have unaccountable jurisdiction to pass regulations and levy tariffs (read "taxation without representation") over any future global citizens.
