    49. Belgium Apologizes To Congo
for their harsh treatment of the territories that they colonialized, and ultimately unwilling to give up their colonies, the belgium government was determined
    http://theearthcenter.com/ffarchivesbelgium.html
Belgim's Apology to Congo By Rachel Naba
Belgium was once considered one of the most brutal colonializers in Africa. Famous for their harsh treatment of the territories that they colonialized, and ultimately unwilling to give up their colonies, the Belgium government was determined to do whatever it took to preserve their interests on the African continent, even if that meant assassinating a leader who dared to threaten Belgium authority. Now, over forty years after Congo's independence from colonial Belgium, the government has publicly apologized for its role in killing the first Congolese prime minister, Patrice Lumumba.
Belgium's King Leopold II personally owned the colony of Congo and saw the territory as a goldmine. Under his brutal command, Congolese men were forced to deliver ivory and rubber for the foreign King, and an estimated ten million people were massacred during Leopold's "Congo Free State" reign. It was only when European citizens reached their limit to the horrors they could allow Leopold to furnish on the people of Congo that the Belgium government was forced to buy the colony from their own King. The Belgium government kept a tight control over the territory, benefiting from the lands reserves of copper, rubber, diamonds, cobalt and uranium.
It was after World War II that the Belgium government, under great pressure from a nationalist uprising, conceded to "grant" the Congo their independence. As with all imperialistic countries, Belgium's idea of independent Congo was entirely different than Congo's idea, and when Patrice Lumumba was democratically elected as the first ruler, the Belgium government knew they had a "problem".

GREEN GROUPS CALL ON BELGIUM GOVERNMENT TO BAN GM CROP
Experts accept growing modified oilseed rape is harmful for the environment
Brussels, 28 January 2004: A coalition of environment and nature conservation groups (1) today called on the Belgium Government to ban the commercial growing of a genetically modified (GM) oilseed rape after their expert advisors reported serious concerns about its environmental safety. Recent trials have shown that it would damage wildlife if grown.(2) The Belgium Biosafety Council did not give a positive advice on Bayer´s GM oilseed rape that has been engineered to resist the company´s own herbicide (3). They concluded that negative consequences on biodiversity may not be controlled and that agricultural guidelines for farmers growing the crop are impracticable, unworkable and hard to control. Furthermore, they state that containing the crop will be difficult and that the long-term effects are hard to predict.
Because German biotech company Bayer has applied for a Europe-wide commercial licence to grow the GM oilseed rape through Belgium, the Belgian Government has to ensure that the application meets EU legislation to protect the environment. Both European and Belgian law outlaws GM crops that may cause damage to the environment.
