Belgium: Overview
Clickable Map: Belgium with major cities; thick black lines denote the language border separating the 3 regions: Brussels in the center, Flanders in the Northern half, Wallonia in the Southern half; thin lines delimit provinces Belgium is a small, highly developed and densely populated country (10 million of inhabitants) at the cross-roads of Western Europe. Belgium is one of the founding members of the European Community, and its capital, Brussels, is also the capital of the European Union . It is a federal state , with 3 relatively autonomous regions: Flanders in the north, where the language is Dutch ("Flemish"), Wallonia in the south, where the language is French, and the centrally located Brussels , which is officially bilingual. Belgium's rich history has left impressive churches, town halls, castles and works of art, dating back to the early Middle Ages, spread around the cities and country-side. Belgium has possibly the highest "quality of life" in the world, as testified by its excellent food , housing, health care, education and infrastructure, its world records for high productivity and low poverty, and the appreciation of foreigners residing in Belgium. GEOGRAPHY

Jamaica is located in the middle off the Caribbean Sea and belongs to the Antilles together with more than 1000 other islands. It lies some 150 km south of Cuba and 160 km west of Haiti. The island measures 200 km from E to W and 65 km from N to S. The total surface is 7058 square km which is about one third of the surface of Belgium. Jamaica is crossed by a range of mountains reaching 2256 m at the Blue Mountain Peak in the E and descending towards the W, with a series of spurs and forested gullies running N and S. There are approximately 2,500,000 Jamaicans. 90 per cent of the islanders are from African origin but there are also Chinese, East Indians, Arabs and European minorities. They speak English and Jamaican Creole or Patwa. The climate is hot and sunny all year and is called a tropical marine climate. The average temperature is 26°C (Belgium 10 °C). The moist trade winds blow all the year from the east or north-east and brings rains to the island (average rainfall on the island is 190 - 380 cm/year, here in Belgium only 76 - 127 cm/year, still we are always complaining...). Due to the mountainous relief the NE will be wetter than the rest of the island. The wettest place on the island are the John Crow Mountains. These limestone mountains reaching nearly 1200 m get an annual average rainfall of an unbelievable 635 cm/year.

Introduction
Belgium became independent from the Netherlands in 1830 and was occupied by Germany during World Wars I and II. It has prospered in the past half century as a modern, technologically advanced European state and member of NATO and the EU. Tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flemings of the north and the French-speaking Walloons of the south have led in recent years to constitutional amendments granting these regions formal recognition and autonomy.

Geography Belgium With a tiny coastline on the North Sea, Belgium occupies a small blob of land less than 100kms across, and squeezed between the Netherlands, Germany, Luxembourg and France. It is quite densely populated and mostly urban, but does feature agricultural pasture and a few natural, undeveloped, areas. These are found mostly in the south in the Ardennes region, including the Hautes Fagnes National Park on its eastern border. The north is flat, the south dominated by the picturesque Ardennes and the 65km North Sea coastline monopolised by resorts, except for a few patches of windswept dunes. The North is characterized by networks of canals. There is limited wildlife to be found, except in the national park. Brussels is centrally located, while Antwerp is a busy port and Ostend and Zeebrugge are busy coastal towns. The southwest province of Wallonia has its own distinct culture.
