Belgium, a population dense country, encompasses 11,784 square miles [30,527 square kilometers] and is about the size of the American state of Maryland, but its coastline stretches only forty miles. It is bordered by the North Sea [the Channel] to the north, the Netherlands to the north east, Germany to the east, Luxembourg to the southeast and France to the west.
The geography of Belgium shows it to have three major areas: lower Belgium (up to 100m above sea level), central Belgium (between 100 and 200m above sea level) and upper Belgium (from 200 to over 500m above sea level).
Lower Belgium begins in the west at the coast. It has beaches and dunes which extend along the coast for 65 km. This coastal plain extends inland from 10 to 30 miles [16 to 48 km] and consists of dunes and "polders" [land reclaimed from the sea and swamps] which were developed from the 13th to 15th centuries. In the past, this flat and fertile land used to suffer from flooding by the sea. It is now totally dry, thanks to the sluices which protect it from tidal erosion.

    57. Belgium Doesn't Exist!
Through the deft use of relativism and red herrings like political correctness, they have been able to slip belgium into history and geography without anyone
    http://zapatopi.net/belgium.html
    "BELGIUM DOESN'T EXIST!"
or "Land of Sprouts and Chocolate, I Think Not."
(or " " for our imaginary friends)
by Lyle Zapato For too long we have been told lies.
Postal Propaganda: Belgian "Super-man" squints hard to see his non-existant country. No such luck, Baudy. The existence of the supposed European country of Belgium has been taken as gospel for years by members of the Liberati. It has long been held up as a shining example of Liberal philosophies in action. However, now is the time the truth be known. Belgium doesn't exist. Belgium is, and has always been, a leftist ruse; a device applied to propagate the Liberal agenda throughout the world . Hijacking a real country for this use would be difficult at best; the people living there wouldn't stand for it (i.e. the fall of communism.) Thus the idea to invent an imaginary country, insert it into the global consciousness through the perversion of history, and use it as a tool of manipulation was born.
A typical Belgian building... or so we're told. Using the assumed voice of a nation, the Elite Left seeks to insinuate itself into world discussions, quietly changing the topic of conversations with a casual remark here, a whisper there. Need proof? The fictitious country was a founding member of the European Community (which is, as you should be aware, step one in the march to the One World Government,) most of who's governing institutions are supposedly based in Brussels. As are the headquarters of the Customs Cooperations Council (an Orwellian name if I ever heard one,) and other international bodies, unimportant and seemingly harmless now, that will have unaccountable jurisdiction to pass regulations and levy tariffs (read "taxation without representation") over any future global citizens.

    http://www.s97358565.onlinehome.us/cyclebel/history.htm
History and Geography Until the invention of the steam railroad in the 1830's, water was by far the most efficient and fastest means for moving goods (and in most cases people). It is still the cheapest way to move goods. Humanity long ago began improving on the nature's waterways - the earliest known navigation canal was dug in Egypt 6,000 years ago. The first recorded Roman canal was dug in 103 BC, and they may have built some in the Netherlands. Until then, canals were either built between bodies of water with about the same level, or had weirs (low dams) to control the water in various sections. Boats were moved between sections on ramps. Then the flash lock was developed, apparently in the Netherlands in 1065. It had a single gate that was opened briefly to let boats going downstream to float through. The first lock as we now know it, with double gates, was built in 1396 at Sluis as part of an early project to maintain Brugge as a port as the Zwin silted up. (The town was named after the lock - from "sluiten" - to close - rather than the reverse.) At the time, Sluis was on an inlet from the North Sea. (Other first locks are reported at Spaarndam, Netherlands, in 1285 and near Padua in 1481. Some Belgian sources consider the Willebroek canal (opened 1561) to have had the first modern gated lock.) In the 16th century, canal building began in earnest. One major factor for the new activity was the closure of the Schelde downstream from Antwerp during the religious wars and after Netherlands independence. Ways had to be developed to move goods in and out of the Spanish Netherlands without going through the independent United Provinces. And growing population created pressure to make new land by draining polders - for which canals were also necessary. Major early projects were the Willebroek-Brussels canal, the Brugge-Oostende canal (replacing the Zwin, which was silting up in any case), a coastal canal to Berques in France, and a new canal between Gent and Brugge.
