The Economic History and Economy of Belarus
Belarus (Byelorussia, White Russia) is the smallest of the three Slavic States of the former Soviet Union with a population of about ten million people. Agriculture is important in its economy but it also has some heavy industry as a result of Soviet planning. Under the Soviet Union there were two hierarchies of government: the Communist Party control structure and the official government. The official government was largely powerless in comparison to the Communist Party. When Boris Yeltsin as the President of Russia met with the presidents of the Ukraine and Belarus and they agreed to officially withdraw from the Soviet Union, the Soviet Union collapsed. But the governments of the constituent states of the Soviet Union were not acustomed to really governing and there was a period of confusion and chaos. Pensioners did not receive their pensions and state employees did not receive their pay for months and months. Lukashenko ultimately called for a new constitution that vastly increased his powers. For example, governors and city mayors previously had been elected by their electorate but the new constitution gave the President the power to appoint such officials. The new constitution was to be ratified by popular referendum and when the legislators protested Lukashenko sent in government troops to take control.

Quote of the day:
History of bible college: Initially, American brothers from Kansas City, founded the College, in the spring of 1993. They were associated with International Leadership Academies, a division of Campus Crusade for Christ, a Christian Mission. The same colleges, known as International Leadership Academies (ILA) are in Kiev, Moscow, Alma-Ata, Nicaragua, and southern Asia. OOriginally the College was referred to as 'St. James Bible College', and students in the first class were brothers and sisters from different denominations including the Union of Evangelical Christian Baptists (ECB). During its first year the College worked independently from the Union of ECB, and the American brothers supervised the program of training and personally recruited students. The majority of graduates of that first graduating class now minister in active missionary and pastoral service in cities and towns throughout Belarus. In 1994 'St. James College' was renamed 'The Bible School of the Union of Evangelical Christian Baptists (ECB or USECB)' in the country of Belarus. The College is still referred to as the Minsk International Leadership Academy (Minsk ILA) by those living outside of Belarus because of it's association with consultants and pastors who work with that organization in the U.S.

A History of the Jews of Mir, Belarus Beginnings - 17th Century Jews first began to settle in the town of Mir early in the 17th century, long after the town was established. The town is mentioned in records for 1345. By 1569 it was a possession of R. Radzivil-Sirotka who owned the castle , a building which has been the object of many attacks over the centuries. The town and the estates surrounding it were the possessions of the Radziwill princes. Initially, the Jews of Mir were under the jurisdiction of the community of Nesvizh , about 15 miles away. As the Jewish population of Mir rapidly grew, they developed their own community organizations. Jews were involved in local trade and in the fairs held in Mir twice a year. Jews from all parts of Poland and Lithuania came to the fairs at Mir to trade furs, horses, oxen, spices, grain, textiles, tobacco and wine. Jews were also the carters whose wagons moved the traded items. Encyclopedia Judaica reports that from 1673 the taxes owed by the Jews of Lithuania to state institutions and debts to other creditors were occasionally collected at the Mir fairs. In 1685, after complaints by the Jewish representatives, Catherine Sapieha of the Radziwill family instructed the administrator of the town to respect the rights of the Jews and to refrain from dispensing justice or arbitrating in their internal affairs. 18th - 19th Century At the beginning of the 18th century, the Jewish population continued to increase, as evidenced by the records of Jewish contributions to the poll tax. There are also records which indicate that merchants of Mir were in communication with Leipzig, Koenigsberg, Memel and Libau.

Presentation at the 1994 PGSA Annual Conference by
Boris Kleyn, 8400 Minnetonka Apt #20, St. Louis Park, MN 55426 Today's Republic of Belarus, which became independent after the fall of the USSR, is strongly connected with Poland both historically and culturally. For centuries Belarus was part of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, and a portion of Belarus was part of Poland up until the late 1930's. According to the last poll held in 1989, there were 413,000 Poles in Belarus, but many question the objectivity of this poll, held while Belarus was still under the Communist regime, and believe that the actual number is much higher. It is significant to mention here that the number of Roman Catholics in Belarus is estimated to be 2.5 million. I always thought that revival of Polish genealogy in Belarus should be an integral part of the larger cause of restoring recognition of the Polish presence in the region. Since 1960 I have written extensively on the genealogy of famous Polish families, searching for the materials in the archives of Russia, Lithuania and Belarus. As a result of this work, I have published genealogical research findings on such families as Kosciusko, Mickiewicz, his close friend Domejko and others. I have also studied the life of the Polish freedom fighter Migurski, who fought against the Russian Empire in 1830-1831, and of Z. Minejko who fought in the Uprising of 1861, and who, by the way, was also a grandfather of the well-known Greek politician and one-time prime minister A. Papandrious.

    Shadow over Belarus poll
An elderly voter weighs up her election preference By Anna Badkhen MINSK, Belarus Voters go to the polls in Belarus this weekend to decide on whether to endorse the Soviet-style administration of Alyaksandr Lukashenka. Lukashenka, a former collective farm leader, is aiming to be re-elected for his second five year term as president on September 9. He predicts he will win 90 per cent of the vote, but critics say the result will be rigged and the election riddled with intimidation and fear. One Minsk resident, who did not wish to be named said: "I am sick of being afraid. Give us a normal president." Belarus, which sits between Russia and Poland, gained independence from the former Soviet Union in 1991. But unlike its cousins who gained independence at the same time, Belarus has ignored the West and instead veered back to the old Soviet-style for its 10 million population and with it, accusations of political repression and fear of reprisals. Independent media has been subject to a crackdown, the management of the country's only national television channel having been replaced by handpicked presidential choices.

    Belarus se uneste cu Rusia!
    Ion VIRGIL
